Watch the Biggest Loser, they were using them in lots of ways tonight. I've never tried them but it piqued my curiousity when I saw them tonight on the show.
I just started using them this week. I bought a 10 lb kettlebell and 2 DVDs, Kettlbell Bombshell and Shred It with Weights (Jillian Michaels). They are really effecive and supposedly really good to strenghten your core. My thighs are certainly feeling it!
My trainer specifically recommended them as part of my bridal bootcamp! I really like working with them.. the one tricky part is to keep a straight back when you are doing lifts/lunges so you don't strain your lower back muscles.
I love kettlebells. Find some in a size that is appropriate for you. Maybe your area has a class? I go weekly, and there are no huge guys in there - mostly lean, toned men and women. It may be helpful to have the instruction so you can learn the correct way to work with them (like meladoug mentions).
I used them in my bootcamp class. I use 10, 15, 18, or 20 - depending on what we are doing (the higher weights for swings, the mid/lower weight ones for shoulder exercises (like presses).
The swing is such a great workout, IMO - really gets your heart pumping.
Form is important - I know a lot of Kettlebell certified trainers gave JM a hard time when her video came out because it was crappy form. There's a ton of you tube videos out there - make sure you find someone certified that's giving you the pointers.
In a nutshell - for the swing: you are really using your hips to propel the movement -not your arms.

Does anyone work out with kettlebells? I see bigger, buffer guys using them at the gym and sometimes in really controlled movements like lunges and sometimes really swinging movements. I know they're supposed to be an alternative to dumbbells and effective but I only see big huge guys using them. Has anyone tired them?
