Kidney infection?

I had a kidney infection that nearly took my life. They are very, very, very serious and you don’t fuck around with a kidney infection. I have permenant damage because of it.

It will show up in a urine UTI test, along with a high number of white blood cells.

Do you have a fever, nausea, chills (I had uncontrollable shivering. I would do nothing but tremble), back AND/or flank pain? Pain does not always localize to the kidneys and can creep around your sides. My test also came back for blood in the urine.

If your UTI test came back negative, I’d assume you didn’t have a kidney infection. Were you prescribed antibiotics?

@2beemrs:  if you got a test and it came back saying that you don’t have an infection, you most likely don’t. Unless that test was more than a few days ago. It’s possible that you may be passing a kidney stone – if you can feel swelling in the area around it on your back, it is most likely a stone passing. Normally you shouldn’t be able to feel anything from the outside. It’s also possible that you may have a bladder lining irritation. It can feel pretty similar to a kidney infection.

Though, a kidney infection is a pretty serious thing, so if you’re thinking that’s what it most likely is, I would go see a doctor ASAP.

@2beemrs:  Sounds more like kidney stones! A kidney infection (almost always) has to start from the bottom up, so you had to have a prior UTI. More than usual? It is never usual to have kidney pain o.o

The painful sex and odor could be from a vaginal infection.

Go to the doctor again!

@2beemrs:  I know that sometimes they can’t find bacteria in urine at first when there is an infection present. If I were you I would go to the doctor again and maybe your OBGYN. I would also look to see what they are testing for in your urine. Are they just culturing it or are they actually doing a urinalysis. Your kidney pain could be caused by any number of things other than an infection.

@2beemrs:  I didn’t think pain during sex was related to a UTI.  Is it your urine that has the odor or your vaginal discharge?  This sounds more like a yeast infection, did you get checked for anything besides the UTI?

@2beemrs:  I had many kidney infections as a child (so I can’t comment on whether it makes sex painful, lol) but my symptons included high temp, fever, splitting headaches when standing etc.   It doesn’t sound like what you are experiencing but go confirm this as I have a very badly damaged right kidney from having multiple infections.

I had an atypical UTI. I was peeing a ton (no odor or pain tho). So I went to the dr and he tested me for… Diabetes. Said nope you’re good and sent me on my way.

I went back a week later when I was literally peeing every 3 minutes and started peeing large clumps of blood! When they tested me, I had one of the worst UTI’s they had ever saw and it was in my kidneys at this point.

I was put on a really strong antibiotic and meds to stop my constant peeing! When my mom found out they tested me for diabetes instead of the obvious, she was furious! I never had a UTI before so I had no clue. Kidney infections are so serious and painful!

Also, when I was done with my meds the UTI wasn’t completely gone and came back full force in a few weeks. I had to take MORE meds to finally get rid of it.

It was a nightmare.

Is the smell strong? The other symptoms sound like it could be Bacterial Vaginosis to me, but the kidney pain is troubling. I have chronic pain that masked a kidney infection and I got REALLY ill, pretty close to dying from sepsis (infected blood). But the doctors couldn’t believe it had gotten so far, they never saw infections that bad in the kidneys in young people because the pain usually gets ppl to the hospital long before its so dangerous, so mine was an unusual case. So I wouldn’t get really worried unless you have a fever, but it is something to take seriously and get checked out tomorrow. Hope you feel better soon!

ETA: just read your update – that sounds like you could have a fever and that could very well be a kidney infection. Can you take your temp? If you are in that much pain you need to go to the hospital, or at least straight to the doctor tomorrow morning.

I wouldn’t say chilliness (Like physically being cold/chillied) without shivering/tremors is a symptom. Fever is a huge symptom.

I’d get retested at another doctor, but I don’t think you have a kidney infection. Definitely keep your fluids up. You want to be powering down water in case it’s a kidney infection. Kidney pain can also be a sign of dehydration and/or kidney stones.

@2beemrs:  ah I thought maybe fever and therefore infection because I often feel chilly when I have a fever. The strong odor is classic BV, as is sex pain, but the pain in your side/back is not. Still, if you are in that much pain you should see someone tomorrow. Hope you feel better soon!

@2beemrs:  Had you been treating the uti before you went to the doctor with over the counter or other herbal remedies? Because that can also mask the bateria in the test.

And as @Fireflysushi:  said sometimes the bcteria numbers are too small to be picked up.

Another suggestion is could you have forgotten a tampon inside you? The symptoms you have described are the same for that as well and if left in there a kidney infection can occur.

When I had a kidney infection (developed after a UTI went untreated), it felt like i was wearing a belt of pain. It’s hard to describe how awful it was. If you’re in unbearable pain, you need to go to the ER or back to your doctor asap. There’s clearly something wrong, and especially if it IS a kidney infection, timing is crucial. Although, I agree with Hyperventilate, it sounds like it might be kidney stones- I don’t think the pain of a kidney infection would get better or worse based on movement- your whole lower back would just be radiating pain.
