I have this kind of hare-brained scheme and I wanted to see if people thought it was realistic or just pie in the sky.

We are going to Yellowstone for our baby's first birthday... Deep breath ohmygodican'tbelieveshe'sgoingtobeone... OK, freak out over...  We're planning to go to a national park every year for her birthday (since she's a Glacier Natn'l Park baby and our wedding theme was kind of national park anyway).

So we were thinking about hiring a local photographer to photograph her for her birthday at the park.  Is it ridiculous?  Too hard to coordinate?  Too hard to get someone who can do portrait and landscape?  Too rural of an area to find anyone?

I love all of our travels to these parks, but truth be told, our photos from the trips are good but not great.  I'm looking to take it to a higher level.

I'm happy to take any ideas or advice. Thanks!

I think it's a beautiful idea!  Go for it! I could imagine a breathtaking backdrop (mountain) and your sweet little one wandering in a field of flowers..

My bil & sil live in CO, at about 5k elevation, and they're always taking photos of their little guy (he's 1 1/2 yrs old) everywhere!  Great outside pics of him.

@Mrs. DG:I do not know the area at all but I think it is a wonderful idea and very doable! Plus what a memory and tradition to have! I know it can be done bc my friend here in Ohio is a wonderful photographer and she does location shoots. She'll follow families around getting their Christmas trees, she followed one family around just strolling through a historic village antique shopping and such. So there are photographers out there who do this and its becoming more popular than doing posed shots in a studio.

I think thats a great idea, i am sure your little one will appreciate the pictures when she is older and can look back on all of the places she has been.

Do they allow weddings there?  Maybe find someone that got married there and would recommend their photog???  I think it would be great!

I don't see why not! A lot of photogs will do on site portriate sessions! I think it'll be super cute to have a book of photos from each year at the same local! My parents took a pic of me when I was a baby at south of the border in SC, and when I was older and went back, we took another one in the same place. It's cool to be able to look back on that when she's older!

Kind of a weird photo idea... : wedding 1403I think that is a cool idea however, Yellowstone is a huge park and with so many attractions you might be better off doing it yourself for pictures.  The view there is so breath taking you can easily get great pictures yourself.  That and the more well known attractions such as Old Faithful there gets to be a lot of people.

FI and I went out there a year and half ago and just using my digital SLR I got some breathtaking pictures.

ETA: one of the pictures I took out there

Do it!  DG, that would be beautiful and such a cool way to commemorate Ceci growing up.  :)  Where in Yellowstone are you going?  I might know a couple photographers who you would be interested in on the Montana side (and my husband says he might know someone in Jackson Hole).

Also, what a neat way to celebrate Ceci's birthday!  I love this idea!

I love the National Parks birthdays idea!  And I don't think it should be difficult to find photographers based out of Jackson.  It's such a gorgeous area they swarm the place.  The craigslist for the area is pretty crappy (it covers the entire state) but it might be worth posting an ad if google doesn't give you much.  Also, I believe Mrs. Espresso is living there now.  She might be able to help you out.

What an awesome idea! I wanna see more parks than I have. SO and I were just talking today about how glad we are that someone thought preserving land into national parks would be a good idea--thanks Teddy Roosevelt!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone!  We love Cecilia's baby shots so much that it would be great to have the same kind of memory for her first birthday.  She's grown so much since then!

We're going to the Gardiner, MT side and to the Jackson side so hopefully we'll have some options!

It could be expensive hiring a photographer especially if you go to more remote national parks - Yellowstone might be fairly easy because it is such a toursit spot.

Have fun at the parks- I ADORE Glacier. Also, Grand Teton is AMAZING if you haven't been there and it is right next to Yellowstone. I loved it more than Yellowstone - just a thought.

@afuturemrsl: We honeymooned at Glacier and I've spent time in the Tetons.  It's  a wonder we've never been to Yellowstone, but we're super psyched to do it.

What a great idea! Yellowstone is a massive park, so you may want to do a bit of research on which area you'd like as your backdrop. It will take several hours to get from Mammoth Hot Springs to Old Faithful, for example. I'd look for a photographer in Bozeman, Livingston, or West Yellowstone (Gardiner too, but it's a tiny, tiny town, so you may not find many options there). A Jackson-based photographer would have to drive through the entire length of Teton and the southern part of Yellowstone, which is mostly backcountry, to reach Lake Yellowstone or Old Faithful. You might also want to look for someone in Billings - it's the largest city in MT, and it's about 3 hours from Gardiner. Can't wait to see the final product! (ps: We're heading to Glacier for the first time at the end of June - I'm super excited!)

Yellowstone is gorgeous, your baby is gorgeous, I'm not sure how this good go wrong.  Even if you do find someone to take pro photos of her I'd suggest trying plenty yourself because you'll just run into beauty around every corner there.  One of my favoirte photos I have from yellowstone is when a rainbow came out and we were looking at it through big old pine trees in the background, you can't plan for that kind of thing.  You can always send them to someone to be edited so the colors or quality look better when you get home.

@owlbride:  Thanks for the advice!  We were looking for someone out of Gardiner or Livingston... but we're spending a couple of days at two different sides of the park, so have some pretty flexible options.  We've got calls and emails in to a couple of people.  We'll keep you posted!

We have a photog around my area that does parties and x-year portrait coverage for like, $90.(Full printing rights, CD of picures, full editing, everything) It's possible to find someone. Just make sure they understand what you're looking for. Sounds like a great idea!

Well, I ended up not getting my act together in time to get a professional arranged for Yellowstone, but I did spend an afternoon trying to shoot her myself.  I got some ok pictures (though I'm no pro, clearly).  You can see she's signing in nearly every picture!Kind of a weird photo idea... : wedding Cecilia Yellowstone Mon

@MsMamaBear:  There are some really cute argyle ones that could be team green as well.  I almost bought them yesterday, but had to restrain myself!  And I think the monkeys were supposed to be for a boy, but we couldn't resist!

@MsMamaBear and Mrs.DG--I just made some pink argyle Baby Legs 2 days ago. Straightstitch with a youtube DIY video.  It was not so hard and I am no seamstress. I'll put a post up in a little bit.
