Interesting that you've highlighted the two very politically questionable states! You're definitely an adventurous one!
Oooo... Adventurous.
If memory serves, college friends who went to Cuba flew to Mexico and from there onto the island. Apparently, you get some flak from Customs coming back, but not a ton.
Yeah, I'm interseted in seeing Cuba before the regime falls. Not a supporter or anything, just think it would be fascinating. Only really, really communist country left.
Tons of Canadians go, they have infrastructure.
I have been to Tegucigalpa. I was there for a week on a mission trip but we didn't stay in the capital we were just out side. Be very careful and watch your money where ever you stay in the capital. The country was beautiful but I haven't been to the coast. I hear it is wonderful.
My husband's family is from Honduras. Let me know where exactly you're looking to stay and I will ask MIL about it tomorrow when I see her.
FIL flies out of San Pedro a few times a year (to come visit us in Florida) and his family resides in the area of Tegucigalpa.
I've heard great things about Isla Roatan off the coast of Honduras. Is that where you're going?
We are looking at Isla Utila, which is kind of the smaller cousin of Roatan. If the travel looks like too much, I'm definitely going to look into Roatan as well. I did just find out there is a big music festival the week after we will be there, and so I would like to avoid the international hippy crowd (no offense!) if they are going to be there early.
I went to Roatan on a cruise several weeks ago. Unfortunately, I didn't get a great idea of the whole island since I was only there for the day, but I hear they have some simply amazing snorkeling there, along with beautiful beaches and exciting jungle adventures like hikes and ziplining! We had a tourguide who was native to the island, when we asked about the "mainland," he said he would not recommend tourists going there at all.
Trip Advisor has some great reviews about companies in this area, check it out.
I will ask my MIL about that location tomorrow. Will get back to ya!
FWIW, DH has been to Roatan many times and says it's beautiful. I've seen beach photos and I just want to dive into the waves every time I see them!
BTW, just in case anyone else is looking for an adventure, the website for this place is:
I've been to Cuba legally. It was for an educational conference during grad (a conference on Cuban history). It's a very cool place. I didn't get to go to the beaches or Havana though, so I would definitely go back. We flew directly from Canada with US passports, and no one said anything to us there. Also the Cuban authorities didn't stamp our passports (unless you want them to) or give us any hassle.
I know a couple who went to Honduras a few years ago and had a great time. Apparently it's quite beautiful and no overrun yet by tourists. :) It sounds like a great place. Good luck!

Has anyone here ever been? FI and I are doing the mildly crazy hand-wringing over choosing a honeymoon spot, and I think I've found a perfect place. Its a tiny island off the coast of Honduras, the place is a beach house only accessible by boat, but house rental comes with your own private boat captain who will ferry and take you diving or fishing, all included in the price. Perfect.
Only problem is that it looks as if it is hard to get there, and an overnight in the capital or something of the sort will be necessary. Anyone ever been to Honduras? San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa?
A little adventure is fine with us, I'm also looking for a way to get to Cuba as an American (maybe not this trip, but my interest is piqued).
Thanks!
