@ddstobe2015:  My mom got pregnant with me, her first born, while on the pill.  She didn’t miss any pills or anything supposedly.

She also got pregnant with my brother the FIRST month off BCP…so we all think she’s just one of those Fertile Myrtles lol.

@ddstobe2015: My mother got pregnant with my brother, then me and then my sister all while on birth control. She used the pill whole time (not sure the brand) and never switched or “forgot to take it.” She had us at 19, 20 and 26. Maybe she was just “extra fertile.”

Birth control pills are about 99% effective with *perfect* use, but are only 91% effective with typical use, meaning when you look at everyone who says they’re on the pill and taking it, 9/100 will become pregnant in a given year (versus 85/100 people not on any birth control).  So it’s better than a lot of things, but it’s certainly not perfect.

@bmo88:  I’m surprised she didn’t look for a different kind of birth control, since the pill clearly wasn’t working for her.  Though maybe she wasn’t that averse to getting pregnant – seems to have worked out okay!

@ZoeyGirl:  I don’t know! I also don’t think there were as many options in the 80’s and the 90’s (like Nuva Ring, Depo shot, Patch) and she wasn’t interested in the copper IUD available at the time.

The current failure rates for the combined pill are: perfect use — 0.3%, typical use — 8%. So even if you use the pill “perfectly,” 3 out of 1000 women on the pill will get pregnant every *year.* The “typical use” would be 8 out of 100 women pregnant on the pill every year. Considering the number of women on the pill, that’s a fairly high number of women getting pregnant on the pill.

I got pregnant on the pill. I took it at the same time, every day and never missed it, if I was ever sick on it then I would always wait at least 48 hours after resuming taking it before having sex (which is what my doctor told me to wait in that scenario)and then ta-da baby time. I had been on it for 3 years so was very surprised.

My mom got pregnant using birth control 3 times – 2 were the pill.

@ZoeyGirl:  +1!

On that show “I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant”, most of the woman were “on BC”, but they were missing pills occasionally or accidentally getting the Depo shot a week late or something!

@ZoeyGirl:  This! Most pregnancies on the pill are from user error – which could be anything from skipping several pills to taking them at 3 pm one day and 6 pm the next.

Since I really don’t want to get pregnant now, I ruled out every form of birth control with potential for user error when selecting my main method. But it’s not quite that simple for everyone. I’m on Implanon right now, but just after New Year’s, I’ll find out if I have polycystic ovaries. BCPs are one of the main treatments for PCOS, so I’ll definitely have to discuss that with my doctor. :/

@ddstobe2015:  I got pregnant on birth control due to improper use. I was on the nuvaring but it was painful when I had sex with it in. You can take it out for up to 3 hours to have sex so I thought I was fine…until I had sex late at night a few times and forgot to put it back in until the next day. I figured I was ok but….surprise! my SO and I are preggers.

@cmbr:  +1 A lot of people (wrongly) think that if you take your BC perfectly, then you 100% can’t get pregnant but that’s not true.

My mom got pregnant with me on birth control and then they got married (and divorced).  My grandmother got pregnant with all 4 of her kids on birth control (though I am guessing back then it wasn’t as good).

@ddstobe2015:  i miss pills all the time and never have a problem. i often take 2 in one day. aside from that NEVER a single issue. i think u must be severly screwing up or trying to become pregnant if u are missing that many pills to become preg.
