I keep thinking about buying a Kindle or Nook to bring on the honeymoon, instead of having to pack 3-4 books for the trip (it leaves me more room for shoes!!). The price is a little steep upfront, despite both Kindle and Nook lowering their prices recently. Do any of you own a Kindle, Nook, or other e-reader? Would you recommend it?
When Amazon purchased Zappos, all the employees got a Kindle. I work at Zappos now, and I missed the Kindle gifting :-(. Everyone says its pretty awesome though...it also might be the fact that they got it for free.
My mom has a Nook and loves it! She really researched the difference between the two and the Nook came out on top. For example, you can go into B&N with it and get special discounts off their wi-fi.
Her original nook did have issues with turning on after it was charged but she brought it into the store and they exchanged it no problem.
I don't own one, but have been thinking about it too. I saw that the Nook is coming out with another version soon that doesn't have 3G, but only wifi and it's only $150. And I also found out that the Kindle isn't compatible with the ePub format that a lot of libraries use (but the Nook is). That would be a big factor for me because I would love to be able to keep checking books out of the library instead of buying all of them (and it cuts down on your long-term costs).
I have a Kindle and I absolutely love it! I currently live in rural Japan, so being able to get English books has been a lifesaver.
DH has a kindle and loves it!!! I'ved read one book on there and i enjoyed it too! We brought it on our honeymoon and he didnt have to charge it in over a week!
I love my Kindle. We got one as a wedding present, so at first I was unsure about it, but after using it constantly on the honeymoon, I'm a convert. I don't know much about it vs. the Nook though! I just think ereaders are awesome.
I have a Nook, and I love it! I just prefer the look of it to a Kindle, but I think they do pretty much the same thing. If you are looking for more features, though, the Nook wins hands down in a side by side comparison.
I adore my Kindle. I use it almost every day - but I am a pretty voracious reader. There is the whole Kindle vs. Nook debate; I chose the Kindle because I loathe touchscreens, but you can try them both out. If you go to BN, you can test the Nook, and Target has Kindles now so you can try it out too.
I have a Nook, and I bought it just so I didn't have to haul like 5 books to Jamaica next week. :) In a side-by-side comparison against the Kindle, the Nook wins, hands down. It has two features the Kindle doesn't - A microSD card slot in the back for extra storage space (I use mine for music) and a microUSB slot. Plus I find the color touch-screen navigation to be way easier than the keyboard on the Kindle. :)
I love my Kindle! My husband bought it for me for Christmas and I really love the privacy of it. You know, no one can see what you are reading? LOL
I have a Kindle, and I love it! I checked out the Nook too, but I cannot stand touchscreens so I went with the Kindle. It's awesome! I agree with stephmay- it's nice not having people knowing what you're reading. :P
I have a kindle, and bought it when it was a good $100 more than they are now... and I LOVE it! Don't regret that at all! So much better than an iPad or something else. They also have iphone/pad apps and pc/mac software that ALL interact and update your bookmarks etc... so pretty much, you can read your books anywhere.
The ease of the bookstore is awesome. There's GREAT books on the Kindle.
Battery is GREAT!
There is DEF something to be said for connecting anywhere at anytime. If I had to wait for wifi free spots it would have been bad a few times.
One thing I like to do, is download the samples of books. Then decide which one I want to buy. They also have a TON of FREE books you can get too! I like to read a lot of Theology books and they have all the titles I'll ever possibly want. I also don't really like B&N so I'm happier supporting Amazon... haha
I absolutely love my kindle. I chose it over the nook because I'm not a fan of touchscreens and the Nook I tried at Barnes and Noble turned pages rather slowly.
I also love the ease of navigation on the Amazon site for my book purchases.
My parents gifted me a Nook for graduation. I love it! It was strange at first using something electronic to read, but I really like how many books I can carry around with me at once. I'm a total bookworm
I like real books. I'm a purist. The whole Kindle/Nook trend rubs me the wrong way.
I have a Sony Reader which is similar to the Nook and Kindle. My FI gave it to me for Christmas and I was unsure of if I would like it or not, but I love it. I love it so much that my FI ended up getting one for himself as well. I go through books really fast that it was costing me a lot in the long run so for a little more upfront this will actually save me money. Plus for one download, FI and myself can read the same book.
OMG I ADORE MY KINDLE. Books in seconds, backed up to your amazon account, you can download mp3s too, has text to speech. Love love love it.
If you still haven't decided, check out this thread on Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/337372-ereaders-help-me-compare?comment_id=17225825
It's an in-depth comparison of mostly the Nook and Kindle, but also mentions some other e-readers like Sony Reader and Kobo.
Let us know what you choose!! :D
Thanks for everyone's suggestions and opinions! After some serious debating, I ordered the Kindle and it arrived last week! I'm almost done reading my first book on it, and I. Just. Love. It.
Most of the time, I forget that I'm actually reading text off of a screen and move my hand to go turn a page... and then I remember, "oh wait... all I have to do is press a button!"
@Kittyachi: Both my mom and I felt the same way at first. Then I got a Kindle for my birthday and just fell in love with it... and she loved mine so much that my stepdad gave her one for their anniversary!
And having a Kindle hasn't stopped me from reading the occasional paperback. Though physical books don't come close to the convenience offered by e-readers, the content of the book is what's important to me.
@kimmylyn: Awesome!! Glad you're enjoying your Kindle! :)
I love my kindle! I use it every day! It was a gift from FI because I told him my secret wish was to grow up and have a library of my own, getting me a kindle was his way of buying me one. Amazon has a ton of books, and you can also read them on your smart phone, or ipad...
I've heard you can't download books from (at least some) other countries on Nook - might be worth looking into if you travel internationally a lot.
I bought a Kobo and i LOVVVVVE it. I paid $150 for it and it's fantastic! Lots of free books for it too, great investment and I highly reccomend it!!
I'm thinking about it, but I love the physical attributes of a book. I'd have trouble not going into Barnes and Noble or Target to buy a book.... I'd probably have withdrawal issues! I'm tempted to do it because I read so much. I don't want to put bookstores out of business though!
To those who have a kindle/nook/etc what about eye strain?
I know when I read online wth the laptop or computer I can only read for 20-30minutes compared to the hours (and hours and hours) that I can sit with a book.
My partner asked if I wanted a kindle for my birthday last year, but I wasn't to sure about it because it is an electronic back-lit device & was worried that it wouldn't be worth it if I couldn't use it as long (comfortably).
But I am in the same boat as Violachap, I love books, I love having them on my shelves, the smell, weight, feel of a crisp hardcover.. hahah yeah, I'm a nerd :P
I have an iPad, and now I want to buy a Kindle, because the glare on the iPad makes it really hard to read.
My FI has a kindle and I have used it on vacation numerous times, it is AWESOME!
@missmouse29: The kindle doesn't have a traditional computer screen. There is no back lighting or lighting at all. It's really little pegs that flip to either black or white to make words and pictures. I get headaches trying to read off computer screens and can read a whole book in one sitting on a kindle!
@missmouse29: my mom has terrible eyes (blind within an inch of her face without her glasses!) but can sit and read on her nook for hours without any problem. Like Miss Emily Marie said, there is not backlight like a traditional computer screen.
Love my Kindle! I'm a huge reader and out of space for my books so the Kindle is a great option for me. The one feature the Nook has that I'm a bit jealous of is that you can't share books with your other Kindle owning friends. My bestie has a Kindle and we have a lot of common interests, but we can't share our literary discoveries.
I don't know anything about the Kindle or Nook other than you download books onto it.
Can someone explain to me how it works?
- Where do you download books from?
- Approx. cost per book?
- Etc...?
I just got my kindle 2! can't wait to read on our honeymoon next week!
@Sunshine23: it has its wifi and 3g (on the $189 ones) so you download directly from the kindle... all books are 9.99 or less
@missjyc: Thanks! Do you have to pay a monthly fee for 3G? Or is it just included in the $189 price?
My FI always jokes that I'm handy with a scatter gun...so it's best to put the Kindle down and walk away slowly. Lol.
Seriously though? I got it as a gift thinking "eh, what's the big hoopla? I like holding a book in my hands... this just won't cut it." And now I can't put the thing down! I absolutely LOVE being in bed and buying a book. Not to mention not have my wrists cramp after reading a big book for too long!
I have a Sony E-reader and I LOVE it!
@missmouse29: As others have said, the e-books aren't back lit so they don't create the same eye-strain problems as computers. The Sony E-reader's text is designed to imitate the appearance of ordinary ink on paper so it really doesn't look much different than reading out of an actual book!
@missmouse29: I have a kindle and there is zero eyestrain, the screen looks exactly like the page of a book. Eyestrain is usually caused by backlighting (i.e. light coming out of the screen). Kindle does not have any backlighting so there is no brightness in your eyes and you need a light to read.
I've had my kindle over a year and a half now and I LOVE it. My FI gave it to me for my birthday and I was really skeptical because I LOVE the feel/smell/etc of a book and I LOVE browsing bookstores.
I still go in an browse bookstores, but then I go home and order the books on my kindle. I read so much more now than I used to and can easily go through 2 or 3 books on a week long vacation (so nice not to have to carry those around any more!).
I also commute by subway daily, so being able to read completely one handed is fantastic for when there are no seats available.
Also, books that are out of copyright on the kindle are free. So all the classics (Scarlet Letter, Sherlock Holmes, Moby Dick, Pride & Predjudice, Dracula, etc) are free!!
I'm also finding myself reading much longer books and new releases more often because I don't have to worry about the thickness/weight of the book I'll be carrying around.
And my kindle is always in my purse so I alwasy have a book with me.
Battery life is fantastic too, if I turn the wireless off I can go 3-4 weeks between charging.
@Sunshine23: There is no monthly fee for the service on the kindle. I think you can add internet browsing if you want (for a fee) but there is no fee to browse the amazon store and buy books.
You can either go to amazon.com on your computer and then the books automatically sync to your kindle over wireless, or you can browse the amazon store on the kindle itself and get books right away.
Most new releases are around $9.99 book that have been out longer are usually 5.99 - 7.99 and classics out of copyright are free (as well as a lot of trashy romance novels and some "new author" promotions).
@KatNYC2011: Sounds pretty darn good! Can you only buy them over Amazon? I'm not sure what it's like for us in Canada. I haven't heard a ton about them here so I don't know how that works.
