Who has a Kindle?  Is it worth the money?

I just saw on Amazon that they are selling the book "Water for Elephants" for $2.99. I think Amazon is doing a special on a different book each day.

I would prefer an ipad but I know I won't be affording that anytime soon.

I think my local library has free ebooks to borrow.

i have a nook and i love it.  i know that earlier there were issues with being able to access free library books with a kindle, i don't know if that was resolved.

i've had nothing but awesome experiences with my nook - holds a charge really well, and uploads new books easily.  barnes & noble has a lot of free or very cheap books available, too

i have a 1st gen. though, so i dont know about any changes to the new ones

Well, I have an iPad and a Kindle. I love both of them ever so dearly!! Although i don't think I would ever want to read from the iPad. People do, but with the Kindle since its "dull" like it doesn't light up, it's actually like reading a book, and your eyes don't bug out at all.

I love both though so I guess my advice isn't the best :-)

I lovelovelove my Kindle. I use public transportation to get to work and it was such a pain in the rear lugging heavy books in my purse. Now I just throw my Kindle in and I'm good to go. I've got multiple books so I can read whatever I'm in the mood for and there are even a few games too! I charge it on the weekends and it lasts me the whole week.

Yea, I have nothing but good things to say about the Kindle. :)

    Or is the nook better?

Oh, here is the link to the 'Water for Elephants' book on amazon.

@redqueen: Oh, shoot. Yeah, I just looked, right now, Kindle does not work with free ebooks from libraries. They said it should be fixed by end of 2011.  Maybe that will be soon.

I love my kindle!  I love that I can read it anywhere, in the gym, or at the beach.  You can read it in the sun without any glare.  And I get instant gratification because it takes like 2 seconds to download a new book.

I love my kindle!  I also do public transportation and it's just so much easier to throw it in my purse than lug around a bunch of books.  I'm quite excited to be able to check out library books with it when that becomes available.  I would definitely recommend it for all the reasons talked about above.

My Kindle will be here next week and I can't wait! I already have downloaded 90 free books to read (including some really awesome classics!) It's a really good price and even if it means having to buy a digital copy of books I already own, it saves me the trouble of accidentally losing those books (or having them stolen - I lost quite a few of my favorites that way)

I have the Sony E-reader and I LOVE it!  Definitely worth it and now I can't imagine not having one!  It is so easy to take anywhere and when I go on vacation I can have a ton of different books to read without them taking up space or weight.

Absolutely love my kindle, have had it for 2 years now. IPad is not really suited for long term reading and is not designed the way ereaders are to be easy on the eyes. Kindle WILL have the library lending available sometime this fall per an announcement made in June. It is well worth it especially with the reduced costs of them. I have a K2 and paid almost twice what they cost now but it's the best present I ever received and wouldn't trade it for the world.

My mom got me a Kindle for Christmas last year and I had no interest in one at the time. But I was hooked almost immeditely. It is just so convenient! I use mine all the time, and it's great if you have friends with one; we trade ours around and read the books everyone has bought.

I have a love/hate relationship with mine. I've had it for about 8 months (got it for Christmas) and it is starting to have power issues. I fully charged it, did not turn it on and it was dead two days later. I've also noticed that the books I want to read are actually less expensive to buy in paperback than digitally. Kind of upsetting. I can't reconcile paying more for convenience when it costs less to distribute due to no paper/binding/printing costs. But I do love the lack of books cluttering up my apartment!

Something to keep in mind, if you have a smartphone, you've got a reader.  I've got an HTC something or other, and it's got a kindle on it.  It's tiny, but it would work to get a feel for if you like it or not.

    @aleeshabobeesha:

Why dont you contact customer service? More than likely they will ship you a new one as there is something defective with yours. If it's on sleep and the wifi is on, yes your battery will drain. Turn wifi off, not needed for reading. I do this and shut it off and my battery lasts about 3 weeks. Amazon has the best customer service when it comes to the kindle.

@MissGreen: I hope they can! When I first got it the battery lasted a month. I was so baffled when I looked at it and it was dead. LOL

I have a Nook and I love it. I've also used an iPad as an ereader but I actually prefer the Nook.

The backlighting on the iPad does cause eyestrain and the battery really sucks. I hated having to charge it all the time.

The ink on the Nook (and Kindle) is much easier on the eye and the batteries are awesome. They're also much more transportable because they're so much smaller and lighter.

I LOVE my kindle! I like to read alot and I love the free and cheap book sales on amazon. Unless the book is fantastic I typically don't read the same one twice and I was sick of all the books at my house that I had to find new homes for. While the Goodwill in town may not be as happy, I think it was the best $150(ish) I ever spent.

I have an iPad, and I read off of the Kindle app. If you want just an e-reader, then get the Kindle, but if you want an e-reader plus iPod plus web browser plus video player plus a lot of other things, get the iPad.

I would LOVE to get a kindle! But I have 2 issues. Im afraid that it would tempt someone to steal it from me. People love stealing electronics, compared to a regular paperback book. And second, I am rough with my books. I have dropped them for one reason or another, have gotten them wet a few times, etc.

If I can get past though issues I will get one.

Any bee heard of them getting stolen?? Did u drop yours or get it wet?? Was there damage to it after that??

YES!! I LOVE my kindle. I had one for 3 years, it died on me (my puppy stepped on the screen) and the 4 months I had to go before getting my new one was killer. It's to the point where I don't like reading 'real' books anymore!

FYI : My dad has an Ipad and it is terrible to reading on for any length of time. He got a kindle as well and uses his Ipad for other things.

I have an ipad (first generation) and love it.  I use the kindle app and have gotten many free books.  I also get some from the library.  I am going on vacation and it is so nice to just bring the ipad and charger instead of a bunch of books.

I also recommend checking with customer service if your kindle isn't working.  A friend of a friend broke hers while traveling and they sent her a new one free.  (Not sure of all the details, but she was happy.)

I absolutely love my Kindle!  DH and I both got them before the wedding (I got one a few months before, and bought one for him as his wedding gift) and brought them on our honeymoon - so convenient to bring on vacation to the beach - MUCH lighter than bringing a bunch of books!  But seriously - it was the best purchase and totally worth it - highly recommended!!

I thought I would hate my Kindle when I received it as a gift (I even posted a thread on WB about it- lol), but I've grown to really like it. I usually only use it when I travel just because I do enjoy the physical feel of a book in my hands and the ability to write and highlight in a book, but it is really nice on long trips when you don't want to carry multiple books with you. The battery life is also amazing!

As for posters asking about water damage, I have brought mine to the beach a few times and gotten splashes of water on it; nothing happened, but I'm not going to push it to find out. :P lol

@brideatbeach: you can still add notes an highlight on a kindle.  I have issues with writing in books, but with a kindle, you can undo it, and it's like new again.

I have a kindle, I debated between the nook and kindle as well and here was my final choice reasoning:

    1. Kindle's battery lasts longer because it's not a color/backlit display
    2. I read before bed, and reading something backlit isn't great for your eyes/ability to sleep.
    3. Amazon is a lot easier to navigat for me personally than BN.
    4. I bring it backpacking so I don't have to carry an entire harry potter volume, just one lil kindle and I'm set =)

As for the risk of dropping it: I have mine in a padded leather case (with a little external booklight attached) and I drop that thing at least twice a week and it's never in anyway damaged it!

YES!  Sorry I haven't read all of the other comments so I may be repeating but I prefer the Kindle over any other reader for a few reasons:

The others are backlit like a computer screen and hurt my eyes terribly after just a little while.  The kindle is made just like book pages with the same ink so I can read for hours.

I have a little arthritis in my hands and I can't hold a book open for a long time but the kindle is light and easy to hold.

You can use the software on your computer, phone, whatever so you can read it anywhere you are.

I carry mine in a little padded case that holds the charger and the light.  I had the first version, which I passed as a hand-me-down to my mom and I don't think she ever turns it off!

I have a Sony reader and I love it. I have the touch screen one which is really nice. I do think if I was buying one now I would probably get a kindle or a nook. With the Sony reader you have to download the book on your computer then upload it to the reader. It doesn't have wifi. I don't really mind but if I was stuck in an airport or something I would like the option of getting more books. A friend of mine bought a refurbished Kindle and it was a lot cheaper.

i have a sony reader and im ny poinion it is WAY BETTER HANDS DOWN to a kindle. the battery life is way better and i prefer the interface a lot more ( i have had both) also the sony reader is the one that can get the books from the libraries. also a fantastic place ot get some really great free books is a site called smashwords and it will work no matter if you get a kindle, nook, or a sony.

my vote is go for a sony. it may be a little bit more expensive for the unti but they are worth it. my kindle crapped out after about a year and i have had my sony for almost 3 years now and it still works like i just took it out of the box. soon i am going to be updating my reader ( i want one of the pocket edition ones) and my current one is going to SO who steals it all the itme to read his books he downloaded on it.

I have a Sony e-reader which is touchscreen and I love it. If you live in Americait has a huge selection of books too- when I bought it I thought they would be available to me in the Uk but aren't :( Still a great device though.

I bought the other half the Kindle and he loves it. They have a great selection of books too.

ipads look great but the kindle app they have on there obviously wouldn't be as good as the glare means you couldnt read it properly in certain places and especially outdoors. I totally recommend them. Ususally me and FI pack loads of books for our holidays, now we just slide our little device into our handluggage with all the books we fancy on it.

I have the Kindle app on my computer, and I am not a fan. I hate reading to the bottom of a screen, and I prefer to scroll my pages up. My Kindle just advances to the next page. I tried looking for changing the settings, but nothing fixed it. If anyone knows, clue me in!

I got it because a book I needed for school was not going to arrive in time, so I bought the Kindle version to read instantly. I am not a huge fan because of that reason, though I did like the notes, highlighting, and how it gives you the definition of a word when you double click. Maybe having the actual Kindle without the backlit screen would help, but I really do not like reading lengthy texts on a screen, so for that reason alone, I do not plan to use the one I downloaded very often.

Love my Kindle too!! Fi bought it for me for V-day.  I use it at the gym, it was much easier to take on vacation, & at work I use it alot. (I have one of those jobs where most of my work is done in a few hours).  I love not having a huge pile of bought books laying around, and the books are usually cheaper on the kindle.

It was probably the best gift I've gotten.
