I don't have one, but I've tried using Mr. Raccoon's kobo. I'm still a big fan of normal books.
I voted regular books because I'm unwilling to have them fade into oblivion, but I actually just got a Kindle Fire from my fiance yesterday and I LOVE it!
I read a ton of books so I love my library. Although I can read books on my tablet, I still love regular books.
I LOVE my kindle! I didn't think I would, but I totally do. It's so portable and I read a lot more with it. Just make sure you get one with free 3G so you can download books on the go.
I love my old fashion books... I don't have a kindle but would consider putting certin stuff on my Fi's tablet when I go back to school. The kindle can never have the small of paper and binding... I love that smell!
Regular books for 3 reasons:
1) I work at the computer all the time, and need a break from gazing at a digital screen
2) Love going to the library and flipping through books to see what they've got
3) I'm an illustrator and most of my books are related to that: science-y books, paleo books, and art books. It's nice to flip through an actual book and see the printed material for reference. Also, many of these books are rather specialized and aren't available digitally.
Kindle! I love not having 1,000 paperbacks all over the house! It also gives me portability and ease of reading while not showing everyone what I am reading.
@abirdword: agreed. I just love regular books. The smell, the feel, how it's not ANOTHER piece of technology.
I never thought I would switch to an ereader because I love the feel of books but DH bought me a Nook for my birthday and I love it! I did walk past a bookstore today and get all nostalgic but the nook is just so much more convenient.
I got a kindle two years ago for Christmas. I am a big reader and really like the idea behind it. However, I am more of a library girl. I rarely buy books. If there were a way to borrow books from a library onto the kindle I would like it more. At the same time I really enjoy holding an actual book in my hands.
I love the idea of e-books and how portable they are (rather than carrying around 5-10 hardbacks), but I just can't get into them. This may be nerdy, but I love going to a bookstore and finding new books, physically turning the pages, ear-marking if I want to, etc.
Definitely real books! For lots of reasons:
1) There is something more satisfying about holding a book and turning a page than just swiping across a digital screen
2) I get most of my books on the cheap from the half price book store for like $5 or less. Why would I want to pay so much more for digital books?
3) I like being able to pass on my books to friends and family when I'm done with them if I enjoyed them-- can't do that with an e-reader
4) I like that my books are cheap because I don't have to worry about ruining them if I want to read in the tub or on the beach and I don't have to worry about hiding them so they don't get stolen when I want to go swimming or something.
Kindle for sure! I live in a small Manhattan apartment that was previously overflowing with my books. I was also tiring of lugging books around on my commute every day and trying to balance one open while I rode the subway. I love love love my Kindle.
I love my kindle. It's very convenient, especially since I like to have something to read when I'm waiting in lines, or on the bus or train or places like that. I love that it's so light and slim and I can slip it into my purse and it takes up almost no space and weighs pretty much nothing. This was a problem when I brought books with me, because they either A) wouldn't fit, or B) would usually add weight (not so much with paperbacks, but I like reading long, big books).
But when I'm at home, I always reach for a regular book. I love the feel of it in my hands. I love the smell, and the feel of the pages beneath my fingers. I can't (or won't) take my kindle into the bathtub with me. Browsing books on amazon.com can't even begin to compare whittling away an afternoon wandering through the stacks of a used book store, coffee in hand.
So I love them both, but for different reasons. If I had to choose only one, I would choose a regular book. But I'm very happy I have the convenience of a kindle when I'm out.
I really hope I get a Kindle for Christmas. Right now I'm reading e-books on my smartphone. I like regular paper books, but they just aren't convenient. I can read e-books anywhere without having to lug around a book in my bag (I've got enough academic books in my backpack right now...).
I just got the new Kindle Fire yesterday, as an upgrade to my Kindle keyboard from last year & I LOVE it! I'm not sure I'll part with my older Kindle, as I love the e-ink, but the Fire is more of a tablet & is so handy to have so many things available in one place!!
I will always choose regular books, but since receiving my Kobo (the Canadian chain's version of Kindle!) in October, I've gotta say, I'm loving the convenience of it. It's a lot lighter than the average book and takes up a LOT less space. Considering I was one of the die-hard haters of e-books when they first came out, that's saying a lot.
Both?
I love having a real book in my hand. A kindle just can't replace that, and I don't want to see books fading to the digital world. But, I have a tablet and my local library has digital downloads for e-readers that you can "borrow" like you would a book. I've been trying it out over the last few days.
I actually listen to audio books a lot, since I drive an hour each way to work. I have hard time being in the middle of more than one book at once, especially if they are both ones that I have not read before, so I've been reading less and listening more.
I like both. I can't say I vastly prefer one over the other because they fill different needs. My kindle has been a lifesaver for trips, boring outings, and the like, but I still adore physical books and adding to my collection. I simply read more to accomodate both!
Kindle. I'll never buy another hard copy again. It's so much simpler to type my notes and have everything in one place than to try and find a pen, squeeze stuff into the margins, worry about "denting" the pages or bleeding ink through.
Plus I love being able to have hundreds of books with me wherever I go. I now see hard copy books as a huge inconvenience.
Definitely regular books! I have to read a lot of articles and chapters online for school and I love giving myself a break from technology and reading an actual book. They feel more comforting to me, I find that when I read on a screen I don't fully relax my mind. Plus I don't need another piece of technology to have to focus on ;)
I find strolling through the library very relaxing. I love picking up random books and reading the blurb on the back and deciding if I want to give it a shot. I think if I had an e-reader I'd be much more picky about my book choices because I'd be paying for the download. If I had done this years ago I would have missed out on a lot of books I ended up loving.
My "old-fashioned" hard copy books are some of my favorite possessions.
I agree with Corgi on a lot of reasons, and I just love Half Price Books!
I love real books. I don't want them to fade away, and I love looking at my bookshelves and seeing rows of books. There is something satisfying about seeing that. Worn spines and stacked series.... I dunno... I love it.
So far I've refused to get a kindle. I love the idea of them, I just can't give up my real life books.
I will never give up on real books. I love having something tangible there to see. I love their feel, their smell... everything. I love to read and with that comes paper and ink.
I don't know. I just got into the whole 'kindle' thing and have actually been asking friends and fellow bees alike about the best ones to buy. Like @hotchildinthecity my NYC apartment was overflowing with books that I had to give away. I am a huge huge library fan and just found out that my library does lent with the Kindle but most books I love are not in an e-reader format yet. I am not getting the Fire, I will get the regular e-ink one. I hope I like it. I however, do not see myself giving up the physicality of books. I've been known to while away hours at the library just sitting and browsing. I used to do that at Barnes and Nobles but they've been closing them with amazing frequency (in order to open a BoFA or Chase!) and some of the smaller bookstores don't have enough space to sprawl and browse :(
We used to have a Kindle but we sold it a while ago. Now I have an iPad and I really enjoy reading on it. I’m not much of a book person so you’ll probably never catch me reading a hard cover but I really enjoy reading on my iPad… as long as I’m not in direct sunlight.
I love both and buy both e-books and paper books. I have a Kindle and my husband is getting a Nook tablet this Christmas from his parents. In a couple years, I'll probably update to a Kindle Fire, but they have some kinks that need to be worked out before I'm willing to buy new.
Fwiw, I don't think we'll see paper books fading into oblivion anytime soon. I just did a paper on e-books and e-readers for one of my graduate courses, and the adoption of e-readers by the general public is still really low. Not to mention there are lot of legal issues with e-books, e-readers, and e-publishing that really need to be worked out before the technology will be able to overtake our traditional systems. I think we'll still have paper books around for a long time. :)
Both!
I love my Kindle because it's so fast and easy and reads just like a real book, but I don't plan to abandon my hardcopy books either :)
By far my Kindle. I have (2) five shelf bookcases filled to the brim with books. Each shelf is two deep and two high so it basically comes to 40 rows of books. Its insane. Plus some randomly laying around and that doesn't count my text books or cooking books. Bookcases are expensive! For $20 more I got a Kindle and I love love love it. The books are cheaper, I dont have to fork out $30 for a brand new book that only comes in hardback. Saying that, I read a lot on writing and those books I have to have the real deal. Same with my text books. Just fun reading books- Kindle all day. They are also awesome because they go forever without being charged, which is great for a person like me who always forgets to charge her phone and ipod.
I do enjoy a "real book" more than an e-book for these reasons
-The feel of them is better
-Way better on my eyes (my tablet is glare-y)
-You can mark them up and personalize them way more than an e-reader (even though you can make notes, it still isn't the same)
-Just way cooler
-It is what I grew up with
-Way easier when using books for research (for school), e-books aren't aseasy to navigate
So, even though I prefer regular books, I have been getting mostly e-books lately because
-Cheaper
-I can bring all of my books with me at one time
-Cheaper
-I can get them right away, I live in a small town and either have to spend 30 minutes driving one way to get to a book store or order online.
-Cheaper
If you can't tell, price is a huge selling point for me, I work full time for a non profit and go to grad school full time, so the discount in price really helps me.
Regular books, always :) ... I´ve owned the sony touch (blahh) and the nook color (quite nice, my dad loves it).. but Mr. Fairy got me an Ipad 2 a few weeks ago and I must say that reading in the Ibooks app is extremely cool.. it kind of feels as reading a real paper book... Also reading fanfiction.net from my Ipad is wonderful...
However, if I can choose (and def. find the book, sometimes it seems imposible to find a book), I´ll go for real paper ones...
I love books, any way I can get them. I think that the FI and I both have a serious reading condition, and are recovering book hoarders. The first time I ever went to his apartment and saw the floor to ceiling bookcases crammed full of books, I realized he was the man for me. When I moved in with my own collection of books, it was very apparent we both had to make some sacrifices. We went through our collections, got rid of the duplicates (of which, there were many) and pared down quite a bit. The more valuable books we sold on Ebay, many of the books we donated to a nursing home and to the goodwill. We still have tons of books, though. We made a pact not to buy anymore physical books. We do go to the library every two weeks. We also got one of the original Nooks, which is nice. It isn't backlit though, and doesn't do anything but text. I would like one that is backlit so I can read it without turning a light on. For Christmas, my FI wants to get the new Kindle Fire, which I am going to order for him. I think it will be exactly what we're looking for, and has a lot of function, and I like that it is backlit and in color, and will be great for magazine reading as well.
I love the feeling of having a "real" book in my hand, my FI has a Sony E-reader that is just annoying to me, I've tried to read with it a few times. His reader is too small, thin and just.. annoying. I have a litte set of books that I just love to read so no. I don't like e-readers and I won't get one either.
I should add that I wasn't sure I would love not having a real book in my hands but I am so glad I switched. Some of the reasons I love my kindle are...
1. My Kindle has ZERO glare. It looks exactly like a page in a book. I can read in the sun with no problems...not like reading on an android or other surface with glare. So it is easy on the eyes.
2. Another thing I love about my Kindle is the built-in dictionary. Once in awhile I come accross a word that I'm not sure of and with the touch of a button-I know what it means. Especially handy if you are reading a book from a different time period.
3. Although I haven't used it yet, I think the way it can read the text out loud to you is a handy feature.
4. I am able to increase the font size. Love this feature. You actually read quicker with a larger font. This feature would be great for people who have difficulty reading small fonts too ie: the elderly
5. You can borrow books from your local library-or most of them anyway. I have yet to use this feature as well. And you can lend books to other kindle owners!
6. There are tons of free books. And I found that often the books I purchase are cheaper than in the book store-which they should be. And I don't have to leave my bed to buy it.
7. The built-in cover light is awesome! My husband loves that I don't have to have the bedside light on. And the light is powered from the Kindle so you don't have to worry about buying batteries.
8. Battery life is amazing! I read every night (with the light on) and I charge my Kindle every 3 or 4 weeks.
Love it!
I don't know, I guess holding a block of technology as a substitute for a paperback will never appeal to me?
I love my kindle, its great for trips! but there is just something about a real book that i love. I also run into the problem of reading a really good book and wanting someone else to read it, unless i give them my kindle they can't borrow it.
@kelmac: I agree with all of these! Add in the fact that I can carry tons of books at one time...it makes traveling great!
