We currently have a queen size bed, but I plan on getting a new bedroom set and was thinking of getting a king bed instead. 16" doesnt sound like that much, but when I picture it, I think it'll feel like a lot of space. We don't acutally need the space (I was still in a twin before moving in with FI!), but our bedroom is definiately big enough. Only other problem is that everything seems so much more expensive for king size. Is it worth it?
A king size bed is the equivalent of two twin beds, so you really do each have your own space. We will definitely be upgrading to a king when we get a permanent place.
We've got a King, and honestly not sure what we'd do without it. Anytime we have to sleep in a queen or full it feels so little!
I have a king (yup...literally 2 twins pushed together with one of those foam things in the gap b/t them) and I looooooooooooove it. But a queen is just as cozy, and you're right, king mattresses and accessories are always way more pricey!
We're both sick right now.... I am so thankful we have a king and have space!
I love our king sized bed. It is perfect for us. Hubby is a big guy and we need the space.
We have a queen but have slept in a king before and there's a huge difference! I can't wait until we get a house and finally get a king bed.
We have queens and will be upgrading to a King or California King when we buy a house. Can't wait! We've stayed in hotel rooms with King beds and its a world of difference for us.
I always think I like king beds, but when we stay in hotel rooms in one, I just end up getting cold, because we're too far away from each other!
Right now we sleep in a full size bed, and while I like being close for cuddling, I often wish we had a queen for those extra 6 inches! But I'm rather attached to the headboard and bed frame I made, so we haven't upgraded yet. I voted queen, because it's as big as I think we'd go for ourselves. Just because you never know if you'll have to move somewhere with a smaller master bedroom in the future, that you might not have room for a king in.
Neither FI nor I is especially big, and we both do like to cuddle most of the time. I sleep hot (which is weird since I'm cold a lot of the time during the day, but oh well) and sometimes need my space, but the queen definitely feels like enough.
I grew up in a twin bed and FI had a full, so to both of us, the queen feels expansive! Probably helps that I'm 5'1"...
It seems like you would be fine with a Queen.
We however have a California King! The dog sleeps with us and she hogs ALL the bed space and my husband is quite tall so we def needed the California King for extra length.
----
Mattress Sizes
* Twin--39 x 75 inches (or 99 x 190 cm)
* X-Long Twin--39 x 80 inches (99 x 203 cm)
* Full--54 x 75 inches (137 x 190 cm)
* Queen--60 x 80 inches (or 153 x 203 cm)
* King--76 x 80 inches (or 198 x 203 cm)
* California King--72 x 84 inches (or 182 x 213 cm)
I'm a bad sleeper, and have really bad bouts of insomnia at different times in my life. One of the things that really contributes is the bed. We actually have 2 twin matresses and have them on our king bed, no motion transfer is amazing. It helps with sleep A LOT. My FI is like a furnace and I like to sleep cold, all in all BIG is nice, makes my life better.
@KLP2010: lol, thats a good reason to have more space right there! I didn't think of that!
hmmm... wonder if we should consider cal king. FI is 6'3 so his feet at right at the edge, though he sleeps curled up anyways.
We have a king size, I love it.
I do not like to be touched when I sleep. And we have 3 dogs that sleep on the bed.
This may sound crazy, but FI and I currently have a FULL. We just have not upgraded since we moved in together. Our plan is to upgrade to a queen, but we want to wait to see about moving/etc after he's done with grad-school to do that. So we're stuck with the full for at least a year!
Definitely King. I don’t know how people sleep together in a queen. Every time FI and I go somewhere and the hotel room has two queens we end up sleeping in separate beds because there just isn’t enough room in one queen for both of us to have any turning around space.
OP: I don’t know about your plans for children are (if you already have them/will be having them in the future) but a King bed might be a better investment if you’d want extra room for your FI/kids/pets all in the same bed.
We got a queen size when we bought our mattress. If we move into a bigger place, I would definitely get a king or maybe a California king.
We have a queen but we'll definitely upgrade. The only reason I bought a queen was because my last apartment wasn't big enough for a king. It's fine... but whenever we sleep in hotels that extra room feels luxurious :)
We had a queen mattress before we got married and while it was ok, it is nothing like a King! Yes there is a lot more room, unless you have 2 dogs sleeping with you:), but I love it because I toss and turn a lot and with the King, I do not disturb DH. I say if you have the room go for the King size!! As for the accessories and sheets and such, yeah they are expensive, but if you wait and find them on sale they are not that bad!!
lol i have a queen right now FI and I are not living together yet but in our apartment we have a King for when we are together (2 more weeks) and when we buy a house we will upgrade to a california king. i love the extra space FI is a big guy and likes to move around while i'm on the small side i move around too and we still cuddle when we are together
OMG we need a king bed so bad.
We have a super comfy queen now its honestly the best matress ever, just wish it was slightly bigger.
My husband is 6'-3" as well and that's why we went for the California King so his feet wouldn't be hanging off the bed.
California King sheets are the most expensive. I always look out for sale and was able to snag a flannel sheet set on Overstock a month or so ago for $25! after coupons and such!
I've seen sales regularly on comforter sets on Macys for $49 but they usually have really bad reviews so I don't buy them. Our one comforter set was a wedding gift, it was $99 from Overstock. Not a bad price.
Def think long term because it's such a $$$ purchase.
We have a queen, but want a king so bad! When we travel we always ask for a king bed at the hotel--they're just so much more fun!
We got a king last year and I kind of wish we'd gotten a queen (we were upgrading from a full). The sheets and the comforter are just so huge that they're kind of a pain to deal with, and I almost feel like we have too much space now--and we're both really tall!
We LOVE our king bed! When I moved in, he had a full and that didn't last long. Within two weeks we bought a king! We love it! I need space while sleeping and the king gives us plenty of room. We both love it! If you don't need as much space, then a queen should be just fine.
Get the King! We upgraded to a King a few months ago. I've never slept so good in my life! Its like I have my own zip code to sleep in.
We have a king size bed. He had a double before we moved in together & honestly after sleeping on my king size bed & then sleeping on his bed whenever I'd stay at his apartment it seemed like there was absolutely no room. I absolutely love all the space, luckily we have a ton of room in our bedroom! The price for bedding is a lot more money but if you keep your eyes open on sales you can get some good deals. When I first got my bed I was on a budget, I ended up finding a sheet set for $14 at Belks on sale & the comforter at Macy's on sale for $30! You can't beat that! Even now that I have a much nicer comforter set & sheet set on it, I paid $100 for the comforter set & $40 for 800 thread sheets from Belk's.
FI and I have a queen but will be upgrading to a king when we manage to buy a place.
We have a queen and I don't think we'll ever upgrade to a king! We've slept in a king a few times before and we really don't like it. We aren't really cuddlers at night, but we do like to feel one another there, and I always feel like he's so far away from me when we're in a king-sized bed!
Of course, it's a bit ridiculous to have both of us, plus our two dogs (one of which is 65 pounds) in a queen sized bed, but we wouldn't have it any other way!
I need SO much space when I sleep, and FI is like a furnace he gets so hot so I really don't want to be anywhere near him when he's asleep haha! Our king is a lifesaver!
We would love to have a king! DH is very tall with long limbs and he loves to sprawl. If I'm sleeping too close, I get elbowed in the face!
Even though it is more expensive, I definitely think it's worth it. We are sleeping in a queen bed and I can't wait til we move into a bigger place and can upgrade!
We went from full to queen recently, and queen still feels big for us!
If you rent, or plan to rent in the future, keep in mind that a lot of rentals have limited bedroom space - our current bedroom is perfectly sized for a queen, but would be too small for a king.
If you're going to have kids, plan on co-sleeping or want the space to have Saturday morning snuggle time with grade schoolers, the king might be nice for the extra space. :) (Or if you have pets who like to hog the bed.)
I LOVE our king sized bed. And honestly - whenever we have to sleep in a queen at hotels or relatives, we are all up in each other's space and therefore don't sleep as well.
we bought a queen but, i wish we had a king. especially when the dogs decide to crawl into bed with us.
