My FI got me the Pro for Christmas three years back. I LOVE to bake and we LOVE to cook so that thing gets A LOT of use. I think the accessories for the Pro are a little nicer? The Artisan one (FI's parents have that) some of the accessories look like they are just plastic? My Pro ones are all metal! It looks like the Artisan is smaller too. I think the artisan has more colors? I'm a straight up stainless steel/white kind of girl so I really don't care of color kitchen electrics.
ETA:The Artisan also has the tilt head which the Pro doesn't. The Artisan is 325 Watts while the Pro is 575 Watts. So a little more oomph. And the Pro is 6 Qts vs the Artisans 5 Qts.
So depends on how much you would use it?
We bought the Artisan - didn't register for it, bought it ourselves because I cook all the time. I love it! It's definitely worth the extra to me. You can use the dough hook for all sorts of doughs and breads, it's great for making layer cakes, whipping homemade whipped cream, etc.
We just got the regular one and it's great. We use it all the time and rarely buy bread anymore, it mixes dough wonderfully.
I have the Artisan but my mom has the Pro - we both love them!! I find I have no problem with the attachments - have made really heavy bread doughs etc and no issues at all and when my mom made hers from the same recipe I found it didn't turn out as well as mine (hers became too fluffy for a really dense bread). I'm guessing that the Pro is stronger/has more wattage or power but I really find that mine works really really well!!
There's also a size in between, which is the one we're going with. It's 5 quarts and 450 watts with a lift. (We're in the weird position of having an older version of the little one already---4 qt, 300 watts---and it's often TOO little and I'm not a fan of the tilt-head, so I'm taking advantage of not really needing anything else to put the mid-size one on the registry!)
I love our current KA in general---the main issues with the 300W one (which I'm not even sure they make anymore? mine is 10 years old...) are that it doesn't have a very slow stir like the bigger ones do, for some reason, which has been a big issue with adding things (they go flying) and with some recipes with the ice cream attachment (which is otherwise awesome---but some recipes need a slower mix than "stir" offers on this model). Only rarely do I find the bowl too small; the power is a bigger issue than the capacity. I think I'd get a second bowl (for double batches) before worrying about 6 v. 5 quarts.
My mom has the Cuisinart stand mixer and thinks it's far, far better than her old KitchenAid (which was one of the old school, supposedly far superior ones). But I don't love the look of it, and we already have the KA ice cream attachment, which was a big investment. So we're sticking with KitchenAid.
I registered for the artisan one and REALLY hope I get it :)
what colors did you ladies get?
Oh man, I was not going to include this in our registry but you girls are super convincing.....hmmm
@virginia you GOTTA :) it is one of those things that *must* be on there even if you don't think you'll ever get it...and maybe you won't, but you could (people sometimes like to go in on things together in groups) and it is fun to dream!!
@Sulli - our Artisan is grey, which I like, but I would have loved the French blue one! We got it off Craigslist barely used for $150.
ETA: our attachments are all metal and ceramic. Maybe it's the step below Artisan that's otherwise? I can't remember what it's called, but R's parents have one. It's smaller as well.
I'm guessing I have the Artisan because I have all metal and ceramic attachments. I haven't used it much yet (I've had it a long time but not much chance to bake) but I love it so far!
Love the Artisan, which I got as a wedding gift. Definitely outbeats any other mixer I've ever had.
I have the Kitchen Aid with the lift. I think my bowl is 5 quarts. I don't remember the wattage. It is Red. My Aunt AN Uncle got it for a combined wedding/shower gift. They got an awesome deal at Costco. I love it. It does have a slow stir speed, just remember to use it. I forgot once and had flour all over the place.
I bake a lot, so I went with the Pro. I really like the colors you can get with the artisan, but for me, it made more sense to go with the Pro because of the bigger bowl, the power and the lift. So, I have a plain old white one, but I love it. I really don't like the tilt head after using one with a lift. Just a personal preference.
It's great to hear everyone's thoughts! I guess I'm good to stick with my Artisan in Caviar :)
We have the pro, and I really like. But in retrospect, I would have gotten the artisan for a couple reasons: 1) I prefer the artisan's tilting head to the pro's lift, and 2) the 6 quart bowl on the pro is really big. It's often difficult to get the first couple ingredients together when a batch is small (like creaming a smaller amount of butter and sugar or beating 4 egg whites). I end up using my cheap-o hand mixer a lot, but I never had to with my previous, smaller and less powerful stand mixer. I guess I'm not a "pro" baker, so I don't really need a pro level mixer ;)
I have an Artisan. It came with a dough hook. She is my favorite kitchen buddy. I have no complaints about it...i do a lot of "fancy" cooking in my kitchen that require one and while I need to replace the whisk probably (i use it all the time), I'm really happy with it.
Plus, buy it from Lowes. They'll match any other price (including Macy's) AND give you 10% in addition off.
We registered for the Pro 5 Plus - sounds like the same one that oakster registered for. It's this one: http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KV25GOXBU-Professional-5-Quart-Cobalt/dp/B0001HLTRU/ref=wr_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I39WKMLIZPPQO8&colid=DG8DTQ1T6DO2
You have no idea how long I've lusted after a kitchenaid in cobalt blue...
I have the artisan version -- pink!! -- which I bought with college graduation money years before there was a FI in the picture. I LOVE it. It's such a good investment and to answer your question, yes, it mixes dough beautifully. It's such good quality which is hard to find these days -- I have a feeling I'll be using it with my grandkids one day.
Registered for the Artisan in Pistachio. It was the first gift that was bought off my registry! My grandma saw that we had it on there, and immediately wanted to give it to us because she received a Kitchenaid stand mixer for her wedding over 50 years ago! :)
I got the Artisan. It can mix dough but it sometimes rattles and shakes when doing it.
Wouldn't you know, FI and I walked into Williams-Sonoma and found a Kitchen Aid mixer that we just loved. Then we looked at the price tag -- $900!!
Here it is:
We just LOVE the brushed nickel finish. Sadly we will be registering for the artisan instead. There's pretty much no way that I will ask for a thousand dollar mixer. Plus I don't think anyone would get it for us anyways.
@skibobrown: This isn't the same mixer... but if you're registered at Bed Bath & Beyond, you might want to consider this one.

The nickel pearl color is nice, and it's almost half the price of the 620 speed!!! Just a thought. :)
@soon2bee -- Thanks! We're going to Macy's to look at our color options tomorrow. We don't like the finish on some of the metal kitchen aid mixers (but love love love the brushed nickel), so we want to see them in real life before making any decisions. (Yeah, we're really freaking picky.) We'll probably pick one of the Artisan models, since I don't really think we need the pro.

For those of you who registered for a KitchenAid mixer, did you go for the Artisan or Pro 610 model?
And if you got it, do you like yours? Is it good for mixing dough?
