@missjuli:  i used to work at macy’s, and in general they will only do a full return in the form of payment an item was purchased with. so if they purchased it with their credit card, the refund will go back onto that credit card…and then you’d have to call them and be like, hey, wheres my money? haha that would be awkward. i voted keep them, but regift is a legitimate option.

Definitely don’t ask for the receipt.

I don’t see a problem with trying to return them — the store can’t refund the original credit card unless they have the receipt to begin with. I would just try to return them to Macy’s for store credit.

Do a little digging and see if you can find out if they really did just purchase it.  Maybe *they* just regifted it to you.  Awkward…

I would see if you can return it for store credit and use that to buy the knives you want.  Do they sell the same ones you want?  Otherwise I would still try to get store credit and buy something you need or missed out on with that credit.  And maybe buy the knives you really want yourselves.

I definitely would not ask for a receipt…

@missjuli:  i’m not sure. you can always just take them in and ask if its possible. they may have also changed their systems since i worked there (in ’10).

@TwoStatesBride:  If she doesn’t have the original receipt, how could the store refund the gift giver’s credit card?

@cmbr:  at macy’s they attach a special return label to every item purchased. they have policies about what the labels do, and i can’t remember them all since its been a few years (and it might have changed). i BELIEVE the return label still allows you to get the refund in the form of payment used, but it might only work for in-store credit. like i said, this has been a few years, but i know they’re still using the labels, and i believe they *do* allow you to ditch the item, whether that be for a same-form refund or for in-store credit.

I say return something you know you are not planning of using. Macy’s will definately give you a store credit!

A few months ago I returned a random Denby plate that was neither mine or FI’s…go figure. But it had a sticker on the back from Macy’s. They took that sucker back. I literally have no idea if that pattern is even still made!

@missjuli:  Don’t settle on knives. We purposely did not register for knives as a I am a Cutco addict. I’m not a chef so these are sharp and high end enough for my home cooking and I love them.

Do you have a Macy’s card? Sometimes if you do they will apply the return amount to your Macy’s card (just did this today with some jewelry).

If you don’t have a Macy’s card or if the knives exceed the amount they will give you store credit. Perhaps you and your DH can get something nice from around the store that you do need/want.

I assume BB&B doesn’t carry that particular set? They are pretty lenient on returns.

Otherwise I’d just take the store credit from Macys.

Does it have a little return bar code sticker on it.  The might be able to look up the purchase with that.  I see them sticking that on some purchases now.  If it doesn’t have that, I’d probably just keep it cause returning anything without a recipt is a not worth it at all, they will give you the lowest selling price in the last 180 days, and I swear they make it up.  I tired to exchange a duvet cover once (a medium for king) and I think i bought it for like $120, the CK Bamboo Flower set, and it was the cheapeset I’d ever seen it which is why I bought it.  Id’ been watching it for years.  But when they rang it up as return iwht no recipt, it came up as like 75 bucks.  I swear, there’s no way it was ever that cheap, since they still sell it now for more than that.

@missjuli:  If it has the barcode on it, I think they should be able to give you store credit for acutal price paid.  BBB usually takes back anything they sell no questions asked.  Especially if you want to exchange it for something else there.
