Okay, so FI and I have been doing research on honeymoon possibilities. We know we want tropical - my dream was tahiti, but we didn't want to break the bank on this trip. FI suggested Thailand and the possibility of going to Koh Samui and a few other places. Anyone do a similar trip? I'd love to hear suggestions of hotels or other places in Thailand that are fun!
We're going to do a Thailand tour (Bangkok and Chiang Mai) and then end the trip on the beaches in Thailand. We are considering Koh Samui in July or Phuket...which is high season in Koh Samui but low season in Phuket. But I've never been, so I'm just trying to figure out which is the best option! Have you considered doing a tour or do you want to stay in one place?
I'm so glad there's someone else doing Thailand! We are open to the idea of a tour, but maybe not so interested in Bangkok itself. I'd love to know what you end up planning, and where you end up deciding to stay. Please keep in touch!
I travelled around Thailand a good bit about two years ago and if you're planning on heading in that direction (which I totally would recommend- it's amazing!) I would take a look at Koh Tao maybe over Koh Samui. Koh Samui is the better known of the three islands (Koh Tao, Phangan and Tao) but of the three it was by far my least favourite. It's been so popular for a while now it has become very developed. Good fun for backpacking, lots of parties but I couldn't imagine honeymooning on it! (The part of it I saw anyway) If you're looking for the tropical paradise type of beach Koh Tao is where it's at! You can travel between the three by boat in a little over an hour or so if you wanted to split your time there. Phuket was beautiful too but when I was there which was only two years ago there was still an awful lot of construction going on after the tsunami so it wasn't it the best shape. Might be better now though!
We're travelling to Koh Samui for our honeymoon at the beginning of June. We're super stoked! We originally wanted to do the Maldives, but that would have broken the bank, so we decided on Thailand. We're flying direct from Toronto to Hong Kong (15 hrs...kill me now), and then flying from Hong Kong direct to Koh Samui via Bangkok Airways. Thats only a 3 hr-ish flight (much better). We found an amazing private villa resort called The Headlands. For roughly $300 a night you get a gorgeous... and I mean GORGEOUS private villa on the beach, with a private pool, indoor/outdoor bathroom, private chef to come in an make meals for you/teach you how to cook traditional Thai, the option for spa treatments in room, and a private driver to take you around. We're planning on doing some snorkelling/dives in Koh Tao, and some other small excursions around the island. I seriously can't wait!
Is it bad to be a little more excited about the honeymoon than the wedding itself?! hehe.
@babyjewels: Haha I know what you mean! I was totally into wedding planning, and then started looking up honeymoon stuff and I can't stop now! We are trying to decide between Phuket and Koh Samui...but I just read that around July, Koh Samui has better weather...but then again its cheaper in Phuket. How long will you be in Koh Samui?
Thanks girls! I'm so glad there are other Thailand goers out there, I was beginning to worry that my fiance was off his rocker for suggesting it! I'm getting super excited about planning this honeymoon now. Thanks for all of the input on islands to visit!
We decided on Koh Samui over Phuket for the weather at the time if our trip (June) and it's less expensive, but very much as luxurious! We're leaving June 4th from Toronto, flying direct to Hong Kong and will arrive in Koh Samui June 5th. We're then staying in Koh Samui for 7 days, flying back to Hong Kong and spending 2 more nights there before flying home.
Have you picked a resort? There are so many to choose from!
@babyjewels: No I'm still researching...its so hard to choose! Where are you staying?
I'm loving this conversation between you two ladies! Please let us know when you choose resorts, that would be so helpful!

We're also thinking of travelling around to some of the nearby resorts to have dinner or spa treatments. The W hotel looks really nice, we also thought about the Banyan Tree.
Wow The Headlands looks amazing!!! I think we've definitely settled on going to Koh Samui...we'll be there just over a month after you...I would hate to fly all the way to Thailand and go to Phuket and be stuck on a rainy beach. We'll probably decide on our resort by the end of the week...
@babyjewels: Got my flights booked so I'll be in Koh Samui from 7/13-7/20 but no hotel booked yet! So hard to choose!
@icelara: Lucky duck! How fun! :) Good luck with the hotel search! Don't forget to share when you do book it!
I agree with Smiley Bride about Koh Tao. I travelled around Thailand last winter and it was BY FAR my fav of the three East Coast Islands. Koh Samui has some gorgeous resorts though, and is probably the most honey moon-esque. I really hated Phuket. But, it also has some amazing resorts. Just watch out for the areas (mostly Patong Beach area!) that are full of gross bars, hookers, and overly tanned and drunk Euro trash. Kamala, Kata, & Karon Beaches in Phuket are nicer. Honestly though, I love the national park islands off the coast of Western Thailand (Simillian & Suran Islands) the most. They are incredibly gorgeous. Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta were also wonderful if you really research where you stay!
And Chang Mai is lovely and you can ride elephants!!
Ok we picked our resort! It was really hard...theres so much to choose from...but both my fiance and I didn't want to be totally isolated so we picked this place.

The resort is north of Chaweng (the party beach) but way up on a hill, so lots of reviews have said its far enough where you're not in the middle of the craziness. Its also close to Bophut, which I've read has amazing restaurants and is more laid back than Chaweng. Decent reviews on Tripadvisor (although some people don't like that its on a hill), but the prices were reasonable enough for us to book a pool villa room. So we'll still be somewhat isolated in our own villa and pool, but close enough to restaurants/nightlife/shopping if we do decide to go that route. We also plan to do some daytrips to the Anthong Marine Park or Koh Tao, or both!
@Stiz: We are going to Chiang Mai first before we go to Koh Samui! Did you have a specific elephant camp that you recommend?
@icelara: Yes there are some that are better than others. If you want to swim with them and feed them, etc, then the www.elephantnaturefoundation.org is best. You cannot ride the elephants there, but you can play with them and learn all about them! All the elephants at this park are rescue elephants.
I would recommend www.pataraelephantfarm.com for riding. Essentially you become the "trainer" for the day. You track elephants and ride bareback to a local temple.
There are many places to interact with the elephants near Chiang Mai, just make sure the place you choose benefits the animals!
And have an amazing time
!
Thanks! This thread is becoming my favorite to check up on every day! :) So nice to see more Thailand honeymoon brides joining us too!
wow I totally missed all these posts!
@icelara: that place looks amazing! You must be super excited!! I know I am :)
We're planning on visiting a couple of the other resorts nearby for dinner/cocktails, and doing some snorkelling and perhaps an elephant tour (animal friendly of course!).
I can't wait to be there!!
I'm totally behind you ladies, but I'm so excited to announce that my FI just booked our plane tickets to Thailand! Now I can finally start looking at the locations you ladies have been talking about! :) Yay!
@pengoala: Yay! Excited for you! I loved planning everything and I can't wait to go!
We just booked our honeymoon in koh Samui and am so excited! Thanks for all your advice ladies. We found a gorgeous villa on VRBO that was so cheap for what we are getting. I would love to ride elephants (but want it to be a humane center) - any suggestions?
We went to Thailand for about 3 weeks a few years ago. We flew in & out of Bangkok. It's a crazy, crowded (rather gross) city but you must go check it out. Do the touristy stuff (beware of "deals" that will take you from place to place - they are scams). We went to several islands, and most were nearly vacant. Phuket is rather expensive and crowded (compared to the other beach areas), but also cool to check out. In some ways it was crazier than Bangkok. Let's see, we went to Koh Lanta, Phi Phi, and Riley Bay. The cheapest hotel was $8 a night (in Bangkok), and the most expensive was about $40 a night which was for a beach front bungalow looking out to the island that was in the movie "The Island" with Leo D. It's been a few years, but I think I spent roughly $500 for 3 weeks on food, hotel, transport in Thailand (a plane and taxis), as well as gifts for about 10 people and myself. I really, really want to go back, but I think we'll do something new for our honeymoon!
@ms. rice crispy treat: Thanks for the suggestions, this is great!
FI and I have settled on our schedule at long last! We're going to stay in Bangkok the night we get in, then spend 5 nights each on Koh Phanhan and Koh Samui. We've found two resorts that look pretty amazing. And then we'll stay in Bangkok the night before we leave. I'm getting really excited about Thailand!! I'll share the resort info as soon as I get it from FI (the honeymoon has been his job). :)
I haven't yet been to Thailand (planning on it soon!) but I have lots of friends who have gone for their honeymoon or just for a trip and they all LOVED it. It's a great choice!
I'm so jealous, you are going to eat the best food ever!
@Evie19: I know, I'm pretty stoked! FI really wanted to try to score Tahiti for me, but I'm super excited about Thailand! :)
@pengoala: Thailand is definitely not a step down from Tahiti, you guys will have an awesome time and I want to hear all about it when you get back!
@Evie19: You got it. :) Wow, less than 4 months to Thailand, baby! Have you thought about honeymoon yet?
@pengoala: Yes! We couldn't decide between Prague and Paris, so we are going to Prague right after the wedding, and Paris during our Easter break in April.
Although now Im wondering if we should go to Scotland instead in April rather than Paris...can't decide.
I am honestly not an indecisive person at all- but when it comes to some of the wedding stuff I have really gone crazy!
Thailand is one of my choices for our honeymoon and i really want to go.....
@Evie19: Understandable! I'm always an indecisive person, and have been no different with the wedding. It's hard cuz you only get 1 stab at it all!! :)
@pengoala: Exactly! Everyone keeps telling me it's impossible for everything to be "perfect" but I'm in denial about that. So a lot of pressure goes into every decision. ;)
What do you think- Paris or Scotland in April? :)
@Evie19: Gosh, I don't know! Have you been to Paris? Paris is just BEAUTIFUL and such a great idea for a honeymoon. Scotland has incredible nature sights and is just so beautiful if you want to get outdoors and all that. :) I love both places, but haven't been to either in about 10 years. Love both ideas, but I might lean towards Paris!
@pengoala: FI and I have both been to Paris many times, but never together...I love Paris but I've always wanted to see Scotland's natural beauty.
I guess whichever one we pick, we can go to the next place next year!
Ohhhh jealous!!!
My FI's brother lived in Bangkok for a couple years. He hated to leave! Really beautiful country with beautiful people.
@Evie19: I'm biased because I love Paris and that's where we got engaged...so Paris all the way! So much to see and do, or not do if you want to relax and enjoy the sights. :) But Scotland at the right time of year would be amazing too. Can you maybe swing both? Half Paris/Scotland?
@techie: AND you got engaged in Paris? Hahaha oh man, I'm jealous AGAIN of you tonight! :)
I'm super excited about Thailand. FI and I decided to pass on the touristy Bangkok stuff, since we're aiming to relax a la tropical getaway. :)
@pengoala: Hehe, it was a birthday gift to make up for the craptacular day trip I took with my parents years ago. But the gift was also to get me on the Eiffel Tower to propose. But..he left the ring at home. He felt horrible!
That's the way to do Thailand. :) Can't wait to hear the resort details! Now I might convince FI to do something tropical...
