I picked up some stamps and a white ink pad (Stampabilites brand) yesterday for our favor tags and envelopes–both are kraft paper. I decided to play around with it today, and I’m really disappointed. The ink was super light when it first went on, and when it dried…it looks like a slightly darker part of the paper, like I just used water. I wanted, you know, white ink.
What did I do wrong? Does the ink pad just suck? Any better brands out there that will give me a true white?

It took me 3 tries to find a white pen that would actually work on my grey envelopes, so I feel your pain!
Try Colorbox stamps, I think they are supposed to be the “best” kind.

@vorpalette: I used a pearl white (moonlight white) ink pad that I got at Michael’s. It says Brilliance archival pigment ink pad. Here is what it ended up looking like on my kraft pocketfolds.

@housebee: Ooh, that looks great–did you use rubber stamps?

@vorpalette: Yeah, just a rubber stamp and the ink actually looks lighter/whiter as it dries, but it takes a bit to dry and will smudge if you handle it too quickly.

Commenting to follow, looking to do this for our candy bar bags as well

Yes, it depends on the brand of ink, I’m pretty sure. I’m no expert but just based on some research for my own kraft envelopes (I used an aqua ink).
Colorbox Frost White is supposed to be pretty great but it takes a little bit to dry (it’s popular for embossing, it seems). VersaCraft is also supposed to work quite well; I used the VersaMagic line which is supposed to be more opaque/chalk like. Papertrey Ink had great customer service when I contacted them; somebody actually went out of their way to test out the inkpad on kraft paper.

Try a craft ink pad. I have several white ink pads but the only white one that comes out bold is Stampin’ Up white craft ink.

We did the embossing ink thing, which may be an option for you!!
