As a kid, I was obsessed with origami.  Although it has nothing to do with my own culture, I just fell in love with the simplicity of being able to take a single sheet of paper and make something beautiful.

I recently made a bunch of kusudama flowers to use as decorations on a cupcakes for a friend's birthday party.  I thought I would pass these along in case anyone might find a use for the full Kusudama Ball style or the individual flowers - I fully intend to make these instead of pomanders for decor at my wedding.  :)

Woooow thanks for sharing! I've seen photos of these around but never a tutorial! My FI will be excited...I want to use pomanders for decor, but he's not a fan - he'll love this!

This site does take a little bit to load the photos, but very worth it.  It's by far the best tutorial I've seen on them.  I'm not going to lie, they are time consuming to make, but I just think they turn out beautiful and will make such a bold and different statement!

I've also very seriously considered doing 1000 paper cranes but I'm going to have to time myself and figure out how long it would take.  :)   I'm likely doing a bit of a bird theme so I think they would be neat.  :)

Where is a good place to get origami paper? For not that expensive? I haven't looked around too much online, but I figured someone might know.

I love these flowers, they are so cute!

I haven't yet found my own paper to do these either - when I do, I will let you know.  I'm not necessarily planning to use origami paper either - you can make these out of square cuts of just about anything.  I've even fancied the idea of seeing how I could do these with fabric using fusable interfacing...

I just know that they are yet another cool way for me to avoid using massive amounts of real flowers without going to silk.  They are pretty and different - and you won't see them at everyone's wedding!  (well, maybe now you will!)

Side note - Poodle!  You are the reason I came to this site, I found your wedding planning blog on a Google search and ended up here at the hive!  Love just about every stinking thing about your designs!  Thanks for so much inspiration!

I've been working on my Kusudama balls for a while now and I love them....I'll take a pic of one and post it tomorrow.....(they're at work...thats where I've been working on them at)..

I bought 12x12 scrap book papers and cut them into fours.....that way I got papers with designs. Alot of Origami papers don't come packaged as one solid color...they come in multipacks...and usually a bunch of colors you don't want. Since I'm making balls of all different sizes, some on the papers I didin't cut.

Great tip - That was actually my plan to use scrapbooking paper because of the same reasons you describe.  Since I hadn't started them though I didn't know if it was a feasible solution.

Yea its a great solution. The 12x12's are perfect! Just cut them into fours. I can't wait to show you tomorrow....you can do so many fun things...I added a little something extra to mines.

My only worry with the scrapbook pages is most of them only have a design on one side. Did you get double sided ones? Does it look as good if one side is white?

@ amandalynn....because of the way you have to fold the papers, the designs end up inside and out.

@christalynn11- I have never seen these before but these look so beautiful. May I ask when you used them for cupcakes were they too big or just the right size?
