This is a great article! Thank you for posting. I've noticed how little information there is out there about very low-key weddings. Interesting that theknot.com is now developing a section on them. I wonder if more people will consider one now that weddingbee and theknot are highlighting them. I have always assumed the worst-- it would be like going to the DMV, but it sounds like some counties are trying to make it a meaningful process.
This is a total aside, but when theknot.com or some wedding magazine says that the average American wedding costs $28,000 or some other big number, are they factoring in the small courthouse weddings into the denominator? I suspect they don't because it's a totally different type of event in terms of cost and including those would throw the average way down.

That was a really interesting article - thank you. I too have read that the average wedding is anywhere from $25-40k, depending on location. Mr. Mary Jane and I just couldn't see spending all that money on one day... We could pay off both of our cars, and more with that much money.

I saw this article in the L.A. times this morning and thought of all the court house brides on WB...especially you, Ms. Mary Jane.
The article isn't all that helpful with planning or anything but does talk about the increasing trend of court house weddings with the current economy. And...there are a couple of photo galleries with court house wedding pics and affordable wedding dresses.
Funny how everything I see makes me think of the bee....and I was married almost a year ago. :)
