We are beginning the search for my e-ring and I am steering away from mined diamonds.  I considered gemstones, particularly aquamarines, but I already have a beautiful aquamarine ring from my BF.  I think I really would like the look of diamonds.  I would like to know more about lab created diamonds.  Do any of you have them?  Do they look different from mined diamonds?  Anything else I should consider before going this route?  Thanks

My BIL owns a company that does man made diamonds.  They are brilliant and eco friendly and conflict free by nature.  I'm all for them, but DH got me a real one because he is very traditional :)

There are three kinds of mined diamond alternatives out there:

1- Cubic Zirconium (Asha, Briolet, and Carat)

    2- Moissanite (moissanite.com) and

3- lab created diamonds (made by companies like Gemesis )

I am going with Moissanite for my e-ring and I think it actually looks BETTER than diamonds. I have done TONS of research on moissanite and I encourage you to look into it!

Jumping off of ToasterCat, that is good info. If you really want a white diamong, a moissanite is a good choice. If you are interested in a colored diamond, a lab created one can be a good choice. White diamonds are very expensive if lab created, but colored, expecially yellow, are less expensive lab created. They are just as much diamonds, though.

Physically and chemically speaking, lab diamonds are real diamonds. One may also say that they have less impurity/inclusions than natural diamonds. I looked into those >2 yrs ago. Then, there was still a technological hurdle in producing colorless lab diamonds that are bigger than .6 or .7 carat. Most available ones are .5 or less. Bigger lab diamonds are more available in colored variants. I personally loved the pink ones. FYI, lab diamonds are not cheaper than natural diamonds.

In the end due to size, color, and $ issues, we went with a natural diamond mined in Canada.
