There have been some discussions about lab-created gemstones on here before. I have an Asha and talked about it in this post: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/engagement-rings-anyone-have-an-asha
I love it! I think it looks beautiful and I agree with you that I don't believe real diamonds are worth nearly what they cost. I haven't dealt with any bad comments because no one has ever noticed and it's not something I just blurt out when someone compliments my ring. My close family and friends know, but have never said anything bad.
I have a moissanite e-ring and I LOVE it! I didn't want a diamond, for some of the reasons you mentioned, but there wasn't a particular gemstone I was really partial to either. I did like the white color (or lack of color, I guess) of diamonds, so I started looking into synthetics. I came across moissanite and instantly loved it. One of the things I like most about it is it's a beautiful gemstone in its own right. It's a diamond alternative, but not a diamond simulant ;) It's a great stone, whether you're looking for a diamond look-alike or not. I really don't think most people can tell that it's not diamond, and I get compliments on it all the time, especially about how sparkly it is!
I haven't had that any negative comments about the fact that it's moissanite. I actually like telling people what it is if they ask about it because it's a really cool story. It was discovered in a meteor crator in Arizona and is now created in labs. It's fun to tell people that it's from space :)
My FH wasn't keen on the idea of moissanite at first either, but he came around. I think he was worried that he would be judged for getting me a "fake" ring, but I told him that couldn't be further from the truth. If you need more convincing, this is a really great post: http://bios.weddingbee.com/topic/my-gorgeous-moissanite-ring

I’ve been thinking about getting a lab-created gemstone. I love the white look of diamonds because you can wear virtually anything with it. I wear small diamonds and like how they’re durable and sparkly. However, I starting to think that mining is really unnecessary and I’m not sure if the price is really “worth it”. Diamonds have been artificially inflated...I’ve resold diamonds before and it’s always been less than what I bought them for.
One of my students (I teach immigrants) lost some of his fingers in a construction accident. He was building a house, and a house has practical value on it and can be resold for a reasonable (or a better) price. But when he’s losing his fingers for something to put on your finger, it sounds…well…ironic! Plus, I think about how much he’s being paid for that hard labor. Sure, a diamond is expensive, but I can’t help but think about all the exploitation and hardships. If anything, mining is probably worse than what he experiences in construction.
I tried discussing it with SO but he doesn't seem moved at all, and believes that diamonds are an investment. I was a bit bummed when he dismissed the moissanite idea.
So I wanted to ask you ladies if you have a lab-created or non-mined gemstone for your engagement ring. What led you to choose this gemstone and how have you dealt with the comments from the majority?
