woah! that's awesome!
you could use lace on a ring bearer's pillow if you're using/making one, or you could DIY a card box wrapped in the silk with lace accents, you could wrap your and your bm's bouquettes and the guys' bouts in the lace, there's SO MUCH you could do!
If you haven't already bought a dress, the sheath underneath actually looks pretty salvagable (from, you know, these two photos) - if you were thinking of a simpler dress, you could totally work from that and have a seamstress pretty it up! Or you could take it up and use it as a rehearsal dress :)
That's a pretty dress your mama wore :) I like your ideas a lot! I might do the bouquet wrap with my gradma's dress as well.
Oh, too bad you don't want a mantilla... You could totally do it out of that dress! But the above suggestions are good ones :)
omg! you could totally have a seamstress do something awesome with this dress! I personally would make it strapless on top and a slight mermaid on the bottom.
You have to post pics of what you do.
You can use the material to make a clutch too - perhaps something along these lines?
I don't have any great ideas to add, but what an awesome thing to do.
It's not to do with the lace, but I plan on replacing one of the buttons on my dress with one from my mothers dress, as my something old.
oooh all great ideas!! i love the clutch idea and was actually thinking of buying a sewing machine just to make clutches for my bidesmaids and i (if i can figure out how to do that without them looking like hell!!). But I can always buy a clutch and add the lace too.. There are a bunch of pearls on the dress that I was going to cut off and use to make my jewelry too.
Mrs. DG- The layers on her dress are PERFECT for a veil. It is just so not me!
I already ordered my dress and it has lace on it too so im excited that using the lace isn't going to not make sense with my dress. I can't wait to play!!! If anyone has any other thoughts or have done this before keep the ideas coming!!
If your dress has underskirts you could add the lace to make them pretty! My dressmaker is making me a petticoat and I plan on having our names and the date embroidered on it in blue thread as my "something blue".
my mom's dress looked just like that....
before i ripped out every seam in the thing and now i'm getting ready to make it into my rehearsal dinner dress and my daughter's dress to walk me down the aisle in! i'm using the cuffs to wrap my bouquet in and i'm using the lace to accent the rehearsal dress and for ribbon headbands for all of the girls in the wedding party.
i'm definitely interested to see what you do with your moms dress!!
omg using the cuffs is a GREAT idea!! less sewing involved. love it. thanks guys!!
you should look thru dress patterns and see if you can remake it into another special occasion dress... or an after party/ reception dress like i am... i found the pattern for... $2 so this project is costing me.... $2... lol thats DIY you cant help but love!
Your mother's dress looks EXACTLY like my mother's!!! Sadly, she was 2 sizes smaller than me when she got married, in 1982 as well!!! lol I love the idea of making it into a clutch or a hair accent that you could maybe use again. The bouquet idea is great but I would want something that I wouldn't just trash after the wedding.
i would consider making a couple of hankercheifs for your mom/sisters/grandma - what a really nice surprise and great plans to do something with all that fabric
David Tutera did something like that on an episode of My Fair Wedding. In addition to your ideas, he also made a handkerchief out of the dress.
I love the idea of a clutch!
Could you also do something with your cake? Either a wrap on the tiers, or one thing my cake vendor has suggested is to do cake decoration based on any lace that is in the wedding dress or elsewhere. I am a bit devastated that my bridesmaids and I are lace-free, and so was my mother's dress, or I would absolutely have done that!

So I was looking at my mom's wedding album today and she was saying how she can't believe she has her dress still hanging, unpreserved in the basement and how she should just throw it out. A light bulb went off over my head that even if it is not in perfect condition there must be SOMETHING i can salvage from it to work as my "something old." She told me to take it and do whatever I want with it. I decided to try it on for fun! Oh 1982... I can not believe how well it fit me!
I hope to get it dry cleaned to see if I can fix some of the yellowing that has happened and then I am going to play with the lace to make a flower for my hair (i dont want to wear a veil) and possibly a wrap for my bouquet. Any other ideas??
