I just sent my ring in to get resized, apparently it was a 7.25 and I wear a 6. In my office and this past winter it would fly off if I shook my hand and I’ve nearly lost it in the washer a few times while doing laundry. I decided to resize it yesterday since I spent the weekend drinking and eating salty foods, plus it was HOT so I knew my finger would be good and swollen. When I used the sizer at the jewelry store the 6 fit fine, it would easily slide on my finger but I had to tug at it a little bit to pull it off. Well I went to Claires and bought a stand in ring in a 6 but when I saw it on my finger it looked like I have a tiny muffin top. So I went BACK to the jeweler and had them size it again, they laughed and told me that because I had tapered fingers it would have to do that a little bit as I don’t have a large knuckle to push it over.
Does anyone else have this problem? If you do could you show me how your rings fit/how you like them to be sized?

I’ve never heard the term “tapered fingers” before, but I get muffin top all the time even though my rings spin and they technically can be sized down a quarter of a size.
I have my rings sized at a size 6 to allow for the lovely Midwestern US humidity in summer. I could wear a 5.75 but especially with two rings, I like how the size 6 feels better.
Here’s how the two rings look:
Here’s just one ring:
And here’s my other ring that I wear solo:
I just thought I had fleshy fingers!

i have 3 rings and when i was given the 3rd one for our anniversary i had to get them sized up from a 7 to an 8 because the more i had on the more of the muffin i would get…

I’ve never heard the term ‘tapered fingers’ before, but it perfectly describes mine! I have mine a size 7, but I could probably take a 6.5 (the jeweler who sized me said that a 7 was the absolute largest I should go). It slips on an off VERY easily when I’m cold or my hands are soapy, but is much harder to move when my hands are warm/swollen. Despite this I still have a teeny muffin top, but I have a very narrow band so I think it looks ok.
Not the best picture to see the muffin top, but my nails are afwul just now so I don’t want to take a better one!

I have a little bit of muffin top. When my fingers are together, it sits better. I don’t care though. This is the size I should wear and at least I don’t feel scared that it’ll fall off in cold weather or when wet. (This picture was also taken in 96 degree Florida heat, for reference)

My e-ring band is soooo skinny. 1.8mm. Finger muffin top is inevitable.

I’d say my fingers are tapered… as in the knuckle won’t keep the ring from sliding off. For this reason, I always wear my rings tighter than the average person seems to, so I get a bit of muffin top :-/ I’m thinking of sizing it up a bit but am worried about it sliding around.
ETA: I am going to have to get the e-ring and band sized up when I have them soldered together, since they are definitely too tight and muffin-y once it gets that wide.

I would rather have a little muffin top than risk losing my ring! I had a problem with muffin top when i first got my ring, but now that I’vebeen wearing it for almost a year, my finger has an indent where the ring sits and it doesn’t look like I have muffin top anymore 🙂

Thank you ladies so much for responding, it’s nice to know I’m not the only person with this problem. I had never heard of the term “tapered” before until the jeweler told me, she also called them “carrot shaped,” I think tapered sounds much better. I guess I’ll just have to get used to it, I do not want to lose my ring that’s for sure!

@chouette: I never heard of “tapered” either, nor carrot fingers. I stumbled on this post by accident. Thank goodness I’m not alone. The jeweler told me I had “small knuckles” which my Fiance jokingly refers to as my “crayola fingers”.
When they measured my ring it was at a 7.5. When it’s Shark Week – I go up to 7 & 3/4ths & when it’s hot outside, I can go to an 8. In winter or when I’m dehydrated & unmoisturized, a 7.
I completely understand, I’ve flung rings across the room accidentally.
