Monterey is the most beautiful city in the world. Lake Tahoe, not so much.
I'm totally biased and will link you to my wedding pictures if you think Lake Tahoe isn't beautiful!
Plus the weather is rock solid in Tahoe in September, but in Monterey you may have fog.
We decided on Tahoe but, then opted to elope to Colorado. Tahoe is stunning, as you know. Moneterey is a nice option too but, Tahoe gets my vote.
As much as I love Monterey, I'd probably go with Tahoe because you're more likely to get agreeable weather there. I've attended a summer wedding in Tahoe and it was beautiful.
On the bright side, either way you go you certainly can't go wrong!
That's a tough choice, but there are only a handful of places that make my heart sing like Monterey:-)
I might be biased because I live in Tahoe, but the lake gets my vote. :) I like Monterey (in fact my husband and I were just there for a mini-vacay), but I feel like Tahoe has more options (there's traditional banquet rooms, secluded BB&Bs, the beach, the forest, the mountains, ski resorts, etc...). Plus, like other bees mentioned, Tahoe weather definitely beats Monterey in terms of predictability in early fall.
Monterey gets my vote, since it's 10 minutes away from my hometown. :)
There's a bridal show in January if you want to see what the area has to offer in terms of vendors..I went to the one in August and it was lovely.
@penga - thanks for the link. I'll have to check it out. I do love Monterey too; but the weather was the problem I had too. I'll have to show Mister the poll results after a week or so when I get more commens. It's pretty close now. I'm still for Lake Tahoe. I looove that place!
@Ms. DG - Yes, please show me your wedding pics so I can have something visual to show Mister. Men are visual creatures and if I have pics; he'll get the idea. Thanks!
I think they're both beautiful in different ways so I didn't vote. Weather is unpredictable in either places during Sept. Tahoe is 4 hr drive from the bay area while Monterey is 2 hr drive. If I were you, I will keep my options open until I have venue and hotel choices to choose from. I would let those make your decisions (prices and the things the vendors offer). If everything is equal, I would probably let my FI have the final say.. it's just rare that men have a strong opinion about these sort of things so I would let my FI have his way provided everything else is equal.
I've never been to Tahoe, but I do love Monterey. What about Carmel?
ooooh i have happy childhood memories in monterey! i think both are lovely, but you can guess which way i voted ;)
I'm biased too because I just got married in Carmel! Absolutely beautiful, both Carmel-by-the-Sea AND Carmel Valley. Monterey too, they're right on top of each other.
It's true that fog is unpredictable, but Sept-Oct will be the best time of year to TRY to avoid the fog and enjoy an Indian Summer.
I've never been to Lake Tahoe, but will definitely try to make the trip some time. I agree with comparing accessibilty and logical lodging options. Monterey has a small regional airport and is a scenic 2 hour coastal drive to SF...Monterey also has a lot of large hotel options if you want most of your guests to stay in the same place...which area is more convenient for your guests?
Monterey is almost always foggy and cold. And things are marked up there a bit for weddings.
I vote for Lake Tahoe. Monterey is gorgeous IF the weather cooperates...and that's a big if that you may not want to worry about on your big day.
I don't imagine Monterey as a place for "beachy" weddings. Everytime I've been there (even in the middle of summer), it's been pretty cold and grey for most of the day. It's really beautiful, but with like a nice coat and boots on, hehe.
Monterey is foggy unless you go during the Indian Summer, which is between September and November. So, timing is everything. But, I am still pushing for Lake Tahoe. Come on hive... help a fellow bee out. I need more than a 4% lead to get Mister on board.
My vote is for Tahoe. The FI and I were thinking for doing a DW there as well. We’ve been going there once a year for mini vacations for the past three years and the weather has been fabulous every time. Plus, I would think there would be more incentive for a guest to visit a place like Tahoe that has a little bit of everything. Hiking, lake activities, shopping, and casino, there is something for everyone.
Plus, there are a lot of cabins and private homes to rent out, so that everyone can stay in the same place (depending on how many people you would be inviting). So you can get more of a wedding weekend effect than someplace more spread out like Monterey where everyone might be doing their own thing.
My FI and I went to Monterey over Labor Day weekend this year. While it was beautiful, BRRRR!!! I was freezing! Undershirt, shirt, sweater, and heavy coat and I was still cold. Personally, I wouldn’t be willing to wear a wedding dress there because I know I’d probably be freezing and miserable the entire time.
I voted Lake Tahoe. Now I might be just a little biased because that is where I got married... but I do frequently go to Monterey with the DH and we love it there too. If our budget had been bigger we would have gotten married there. But alas, Lake Tahoe was definitely more budget friendly.
They are both gorgeous places. I love them both. I think Lake Tahoe's weather would be more accomodating. But September is usually the warmest month for Monetery.
Here is a weather comparison for you.
Monterey, CA compared to Lake Tahoe, CA:

Good Luck!
But if you're looking for a fall inspired wedding, I have to go with Lake Tahoe hands down.
@SandraMarie_1986 - THANK YOU!!! I'm going for a fall inspired wedding. Fall is our favorite season of the year. Thank you for the weather report.
You are very welcome! I hope he ends up voting in your favor. With fall, Lake Tahoe just sounds wonderful. Monterey sounds more like a summer wedding.

So, Mister loves Monterey and would like to get married there. Some days he agrees with me about Lake Tahoe. Today... not so much. He calls to tell me that one of his co-workers got married in Lake Tahoe and they did not have a good experience. He said that every keeps telling him we should do it at the beach in Monterey. Surprisingly, he has compiled a list of places for us to check out.
Me... Lake Tahoe. So, Hive, I'm taking a poll. Bees you may be the ones to decide on our destination location (initially... cost might change his mind). Vote on which desitnation you think is best for a September wedding. Also, let me know your reasoning and please, PLEASE, include some inspiring photos, if you have them. Thanks Hive!
