Hi Pancy,
Please, please check out Greg Bumatay of Bumatay Studios. He is within your budget and he's awesome. Just go to www.bumataystudio.com
Some of my favorites in that price range include Jasmine Star, Trista Lerit, and Amelia Lyon. My photographer, Marisa Holmes, whom I adore and wrote a post about, also has some packages in that price range.
I am using Jasmine Star and Greg Bumatay is also fabulous. He shot my parents' friends' wedding and did an amazing job.
I know this might be a stretch but CA has some great art schools. Ever thought of interviewing and hiring some photography students or professors?
Thanks, everyone, for the great leads! For now, my FI and I like Greg a lot - but his basic package does not include an engagement session, so hopefully he is still in our price range once we hear back from him :)
Greenteaguinness - that is actually a great idea. my FI is a design student at art center, which is chock full of photographers! I just don't know about using them as a main photog for the day since many of them don't have that wedding experience under their belt and I think they really need that to get the "eye" to capture certain moments. But what I plan to do, is pay one of his friends a couple hundred the day of to capture some moments that the main photog and her/his partner may miss. My sister did the same at her wedding and we actually fell in love with some of these images over the ones she spent thousands of dollars for! :)
You might want to consider Leigh Miller. She is a wedding photojournalist based in San Diego, but she serves the entire southern California area. She photographed my wedding last year, and I was thrilled with the job that she did. And, she is within your budget. Leigh keeps a very active blog, and I think that you can get a good feel for the average work that she does by browsing through it. Best of luck with your decision!
You should also look at Michael Graham's work. He is based in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. His website is: www.mpgweddings.com. He photographed my wedding two weekends ago in Palm Springs and I cannot wait to see the results! I believe he is also going to take care of Miss Peppermint in December. His work is stylish, he's incredibly nice and professional, etc. His rates are extremely competitive for the quality of the work. I started my career as a professional photographer so I was super picky about who I hired - and yet I did not have thousands and thousands of dollars to spend. Good Luck!
I'm an idiot and sleep deprived. Michael Graham's website is:
A good friend of mine was a second photographer at my wedding (in Chicago) but he's located in Cerritos, CA:
Hi!
Just thought I'd share my photographer: John C Lewis, based in San Fernanado valley. Husband and wife teach that shoots in film. We are thrilled that they are going to shoot our entire wedding day (all-day Chinese wedding affair) for a little over 4K, includes the engagement session!

Good luck :)
There are a ton of photogs for that price range:
My photog, John Schnack (www.schnackstudios.com)
Besides some of the aforementioned, I also really like Jennifer Rau (www.jsrphotography.com) and Michael Norwood (www.mnorwoodphotography).
Thanks everyone! I am in the process of narrowing down now. I have only been able to take a really good look at about half of the list provided (because each of these photogs usually also recommend some others on their blogsites). But as of right now we are deciding between:
Greg Bumatay, Shyla, Marisa Homes and the Image is Found. They are all kind of different from each other, but we love them for different reasons!
Jasmine Star is already booked for our wedding weekend (which is next October!)! So, if any of you are interested in her for your own wedding I would recommend contacting her asap.
I should probably make this a new board comment/question - but did any of you use different photographers for your engagement and ceremony day? I feel like some photogs make for better engagement session images and others for ceremony images. Is this just me?
The Image is Found is amazing, but they are pricey. Are you able to get the kind of package you want for $5000? I will put in another plug for Marisa Holmes who not only takes fabulous pictures, but is also the nicest person ever. She's one of my favorite vendors. I've also heard nothing but good things about Shyla and Greg, so you have your work cut out for you :) Go with your gut instinct-- you'll definitely find yourself leaning to one over the others.Â
Pancy...I'm sorry to say this, but she might be busy shooting my wedding which is the night before yours! The Image is Found is incredible and very edgy, but they were way too expensive for me. I agree with Jasmine about getting a feel for the personality of your photographer and going from there... I can assure you there are many fabulous ones.
I am having my e-pics done by my wedding photographer because it was included, but I have seen many people have them done by someone else, either because the person they initially wanted was busy on their weekend or couldn't travel to their destination wedding.
you should also check out Michael Norwood...he's based in Orange County and amazing amazing amazing!

and here is his blog

He's definite reasonable!
Thanks ladies! I just heard back from the image is found and you guys are right, they are over our budget :( so sad!!
i still haven't heard back from Shyla, but i think it will come down to being between her and Marisa. My sisters may be willing to pitch in if we truly can't get the image is found out of our minds... but we'll see. I will definitely keep y'all updated!
FutureMrsOskins - you are sooo lucky!! ;) Your pictures will be beautiful. Hope we can see them!

Like many of you - I think the photos are one of the most important and lasting aspects of the wedding (and engagement!). I want to say the sky is the limit, but since Fi and I are both students, we definitely have budget constraints.
I am in the LA area so I know that there is an abundance of photographers in my area, but the ones we like all seem to be waaaay out of our budget. Is it too much to ask for a good photographer who can capture candid moments AND beautifully posed pictures, can work with photoshop, include an engagement session and have a second photographer on the day of the wedding - all for under $5000?
If you have found someone like this, can you please share? I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
