    Bees -

I have to have a laparoscopy at the end of the month to formally diagnose and treat endometrios.  I have a consultation appointment with my doctor in a couple of weeks and of couse will ask her what to expect, but I would love to hear from you if you have had a lap.  What should I be aware of?  How did you feel afterward?  How was the recovery?

    TIA!

I have had 3 laproscopies, the last was 2 years ago now.  It's a pretty minor surgery.  You will be a bit bloated afterward so wear sweatpants because you won't want to deal with buttons that might not close or be uncomfortable.  The recovery wasn't too bad, try to roll out of bed or nap in a chair so you don't have to get up by bending your stomach.  The worst part of healing was the gas that ends up at your shoulders when they can't get it all out, it just causes them to ache pretty badly.

You will do fine, I hope that they are able to diagnose you!

@septcabride:  I had a laparoscopy for the same thing back when I was 19.. It ended up not being endometriosis(I guess my periods are just awful on their own). They didn't burn off anything like they may with you, but I felt pretty good afterwards. It took about 3 days for the pain started really going away, and about a week until it was completely gone. I actually lost around 10 pounds after the surgery. Afterwards, when you get home, you will feel like you can move around, but the pain will hit you in about 10 minutes so just try to be a couch bum for around 3 days and catch up on your favorite shows (I slept for most of the time because of the percoset they gave me). So just rest, don't eat too heavy for a while afterwards and you will be fine. I hope it's not endometriosis though. Before the surgery, they told me with no doubt I had it and I should get a hysterectomy, glad I didn't listen.

I've  had several laps and D&Cs. Are they just doing a lap, or are they doing a D&C as well? I say listen to any advice they give you very closely. My last lap was done by a reproductive endocrinologist and she is amazing. They gave me a mini binder (legit!) w/ all sorts of stuff about my surgery, including good advice for a few days before. I don't eat red meat or a ton of fatty foods, but I avoided any meat and any fatty foods for a few days before. It made the day before when you need everything out of you much easier. For me, I know I get really sick tomy stomach w/ anesthesia so they not only dealt w/ that well when I was there, but gave me anti nausea meds for at home. I filled my prescriptions BEFORE my surgery so they were all ready and waiting at home for me.

Also helpful but sounds weird is to have a pillow in the car. For the ride home, place it over your lap - between your seat belt and your stomach - I jsut remember EVERY bump hurting and that helped. The day I had surgery, I mostly slept at home. The next day (after my last surgery) I felt really good... and then overdid it. For the surgery before, I didn't take the recommended time off of work (surgery on Wed, back at work on Saturday - DO NOT RECOMMEND. EVER. I was in so much pain and my recovery sucked).

After surgery, get up and walk if you can. I had an awesome nurse before my first surgery who told me what it was like to have the surgery (she'd had one). I woke up with most of the pain in my shoulders (again, so glad that she warned me!!) - the gas that they use in your abdomen floats up there. Walking around helps move it. But, don't overdo it. Take your pain meds in the first few days before you think that they need them.
