I'm getting laser removal on legs and bikini, and while I'm not done yet, there is definitely less hair. It makes shaving easier and I get less ingrown hairs. You sound like the perfect skin/hair type for it, I say go on a consult at least.
I've had IPL hair removal done on my underarms before. I had to get it done several times (I think like 5 sessions?), and then re-touches every six months. I didn't do the retouches after a while, and the hair eventually grew back. But, it was SO SO SO nice not to have to shave for a long time!
I've been getting laser hair removal. I've had quite a few sessions, and there is still hair but there is way less than before. I still have to shave, as what does grow is dark and gets long.
My colouring is similar to yours. I've never had electrolysis or had a consultation, but my understanding is that it's not suitable for large areas (like your legs) and is much more painful. I don't know if there's been improvements to it or not. It seems like laser hair removal is coming close to replacing electrolysis, and probably for a good reason.
I just had my first session of underarm laser hair removal and boy it HURT more than I anticipated (although it was over very quickly). I, also, have thick, dark hair so I'm hoping it works. I'm doing my underarms as sort of a "test" to see if it's successful for me, and if so I'll move to my legs.
Imagine not having to shave as much and be smooth all the time!
I've heard your hair/skin type is ideal for laser hair removal (don't know anything about electrolysis.) I was kind of considering it, but I read that frequently pregnancy hormones basically undo all the good that the procedures do, so I decided not to bother with the pain and expense. It sounds awesome, though, to barely have to shave.
I am also pale with dark hair. I had laser hair removal on several parts of my body about 10 years ago. Most areas grew back, but my legs above the knee are much better and below the knee are almost completely hair-free (I get a stray now and then but really they are pretty bare). I had about 5-6 sessions.
I had lazer hair removal on my bikini line. I had a LOT of problems with it before (whenever I would shave to wear a bathing suit, I would get AWFUL red bumps that lasted for months). I spent $900 dollars. I was 6 sessions over the course of a year. It was seriously one of the BEST things I've spent money on. It's so great to not have to worry about red bumps when I'm wearing a bathing suit. Well worth it. I went to Monarch Medspa.
ps- sessions are really quick and it doesn't hurt that bad.
I am a seasoned vet when it comes to BOTH electrolysis and laser hair removal. First of all, you in no way should do electrolysis. This targets 1 hair at a time and is typical used for light hair because a laser does not pick up light hair. I have been doing electrolysis on my facial fuzz for 2 years now and it still isnt gone (imagine 6k over 2 years). Meanwhile, I have had 3 brazilian laser hair removal treatments which I paid $99 for off of groupon and could not be happier with the results. They actually tell you not to tan because it is best on light skin and dark hair (which sounds like you are). Also, best part about laser is you are SUPPOSED to shave in between (dont pluck or wax). I highly suggest finding a groupon, eversave, or living social deal near where you live. I plan to finish my laser hair removal before getting married (still waiting for the ring though) but after that I'm thinking of just doing from head to toe, it's really the best invention ever! Good luck!
I know nothing about electrolysis but I’ve done laser before. I have had 4 sessions and have 2 more to go. I did full body and I love it. Bikini was painful for me but worth it. I to am light skin (like a light olive) and have dark thick hair and I barely ever shave and when I do it takes 2 seconds (just the hair on the front of my legs) I say go for it! So much easier with no hair :) Good luck!
I got laser hair removal done on my underarms and entire brazillian (from belly button to butt). I LOOOOOVE IT. It looks great, smooth and like a baby's bottom. It works best on light skin and hair/thick hair.
It took me 6 sessions (all 4-5weeks apart). I used numbing cream for the pain....I used burn ointment for the few days after...but the pain gets less everytime. I think it's the best thing I ever did for myself. I paid 900 for both underarms and brazillian
if you are pale with dark hair, then you are the ideal candidate for laser hair removal. it is going to be much faster and more effective then electrolysis.
I had LHR done on my legs. I am a blonde so it was slightly less effective on me, but still, my hair is very sparse and I only have to shave once a week. it hurt but I've been told that the armpits and pelvic area are less painful becuse there is more fatty tissue around there. I can't explain why- that's just what they told me.
anyway, the lasers seek and destroy things that are pigmented, so that's why having dark hair works best for this procedure. I say go for it. good luck!
@janie-janie: yeah I 2nd this. The fatty areas hurt less-truuuuuust me.

Hi Bees,
I am debating about having electrolysis or laser hair removal to my legs & bikini line and wondering if anyone has had either done and would recommend them?
I am very pale with dark, thick hair and can not tan at all so my hair is very noticeable which I understand works ok with both normally.
If you have had either done, how long did it take (ie. how many sessions, hours)? Has it lasted, or have you had to have it redone?
