Ok, I figured here would be a fantastic place to come and get some opinions on the dreaded subject...Laser Hair Removal!

So I open my email this morning to find a FANTASTIC groupon for a local dermatologist offering a deal on their laser hair removal treatments.  I had been thinking about this for a while for my, ahem, bikini area, but never thought I would be able to afford it...

    ...until today!

Anybody ever gotten laser hair treatments (bikini or otherwise)?  Does it hurt?  Does it work? Is it safe??  How many treatments did you get?  (The coupon offers four sessions -- is that enough?)...

    Thanks for the help everybody!!

i got a groupon for 6 sessions at a local derm and had my first session on Tuesday. gotta say, kinda disappointed! i researched it quite a bit and when i went in, it sounded like laser lite - not sure if it's because of the groupon or what. they said that it wont stop regrowth but it will minimize it. meh.

I had it done on my underarms with a groupon.  I would recommend it, but warn that it definitely burns!  But the pain doesn't last; it's only while they're actually lasering. For me it was still worth it.  The only caveat is that it doesn't work on light-colored hair.  But I imagine that's not a problem for your bikini area!

However, it took 6 sessions to get me almost completely hair free. So you might need more than 4.

    to answer your questions:

I did laser/am continuing to get treatments

I love the results, but they are not instantaneous as the ads lead you to believe

I would do it again in a heartbeat

Yes, it hurts, but the pain goes away almost instantly. Think of a rubber band snapping on your skin. The pain varies depending on the area, bikini area hurts more than your lower legs, for example, and it all depends on the person/strength of the laser chosen by the technician.

Yes it is safe, as long as you go to a reputable place. Do your research before you buy, look at reviews and customer feedback, make sure they are properly licensed and trained.

Are there any review sites that are particularly useful? I'm definitely tempted, it's just a budget issue...

Yeah I agree...any places to review that are useful?  This place that is offering the deal definitely is legitimate...but I do want to make sure that what they do would actually work. :-)

I'm in the process for my bikini area, with a groupon.

I was surprised how much it hurts (though as mentioned already it goes away very quickly). After 2 treatments I noticed a difference. I was also surprised how difficult it was to schedule an appt (they have enough space for all the new customers, but you have to be flexible), so may be something to think about.

If you know the place is reputable, I'd say do it.

Ive gotten it done in 4 areas and I dont think its worth it. At the beginning its not very painful, but as they increase the laser it can hurt pretty bad (especially for a brazilian... ouch!). But only at the moment they are zapping you, afterwords you dont feel a thing. I did 6 treatments and its been about 2 months since my last treatment. About 70% of the hair is still there. It doesnt grow back as fast which is nice, but I was expecting there to be little or no hair. That is NOT the case. I dont think its worth the money or the pain. And im sure with the more time that passes more hair will come back.

I haven't done my bikini yet, but I plan to eventually.  I have had my armpits, arms and legs done.  Nothing is hair-free, but it was still totally worth it!  I have chronic skin conditions, and I was using an expensive disposable razor for each armpit everytime I shave.  Now I don't have to shave a frequently, and don't have the infection issues (so I can use one on both sides).  Even if I still had all the hair, for me it was worth it just to get rid of the infection.

As for my arms, the hair is less noticable, it feels more a like a typical amount instead of an excessive amount which makes me happy.

I haven't noticed a huge difference on my legs, but I've only had treatment.

I didn't find it very painful at all.  The infection was more painful.  I found by my ankles was the worst, but way less than waxing, sugaring, or the stupid reaction I got from depilatories and bleaches.

I was worried the first time, so I used the numbing cream.  I felt absolutely no pain, so would recommend it for your bikini area, especially if you're worried about the pain.
