I've seen a lot of recommendations out there for first dance songs, but how about the last dance song? I'm looking for a really good rock-out last song... any suggestions?
Thanks!
we choose "Closing Time"
At our wedding, about 75% of the guests had left by the last song and there wasn't much dancing, just catching up.
We're using Renee Olstead's "Sunday Kind of Love" which definitely doesn't meet the rock-out requirement! :)
What about the Killers' "Read My Mind" or the White Stripes "Fell in Love with a Girl"?
We're doing "Save the Last Dance for Me" the Michael Buble version!
Time of your life by Green Day...not really a rock out song though. :oP
Two of our friends have played "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey as their last song...we might too just because it has come to have some meaning within our group of friends. And it is a great song to rock out to!
We are also doing "Save the Last Dance for Me" the Michael Buble version!
Our last dance song will probably be "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra. It has a special meaning to us and a lot of our friends so I think they would be excited to hear it as the final song. It would be a throwback to our college days :)
"Into the Mystic" Van Morrison. Still one of my favorite memories of the day. Everyone was on the dance floor.
we did "Forever" by chris brown. When the song first came out, we both used to jam out to it... and then when I had to pick a last dance song -- it seemed perfect, and it was!
Everyone was on the dance floor!! it was one of my favorite memories. and if you listen to the lyrics, it's pretty perfect as a wedding last dance song! :p
We are prob going to play "The Long Day is Over" by Norah Jones, which will leave us on a slow note.....but I would suggest "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond, I know a few other Bees played that as their last song and its so fun to have the crowd yelling the lyrics :) We might change it b/c "Sweet Caroline" was always the last song played in alot of the the bars we went to in college....guess its a good closing song :)
We had "Time of My Life" from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack as someone else mentioned! It. was. awesome. My DJ played it on his own, which added to my feeling that he was indeed the best DJ ever, since it was exactly what I wanted to hear (but I couldn't remember the name of the song to request it). Thanks for asking this question to remind me of how fun it was. :)
I recommend picking the most fun song you know for your last song and not worrying about whether the lyrics are perfect for the occassion.
We went back and forth between "Head over Feet" by Alanis Morrisette and "Times Like These" by Foo Fighters as our first dance, and ended up with Times like These, and we figured we would throw in Head over Feet at one point.
Well, who would have thought, but the mr had requested Head over Feet be the last dance without me knowing, and when it came on it was the sweetest thing ever. So I say, let the mr surprise you!
We're talking about using "Far Away" by Nickelback. Slow and pretty, with a lot of meaning for us.
we also did 'New York, New York.' I'm a huge Yankee fan (born in NY) and my husband is too... so we thought it'd be perfect to end the night with the song my beloved baseball team ends each home game... besides, you can never go wrong with Sinatra!
I think we're going to use "Forever" by the Dropkick Murphys. I don't think many people will be around, and we LOVE that song.
we didn't even discuss this at all- didnt even think about it. but the dj knew i liked classic Michael Jackson songs and he played "BEAT IT" for last song. I know it sounds horrible now, but really it was quite funny and silly and went along with our whole casual reception. Everyone just continued the party at a neighboring bar, so the song kept the vibe up!
WE are going to do "Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing as well. I'm so excited to see how it goes over! 1 more month! :)
Thanks for the suggestions! I'm definitely liking the Journey one.. FI is a big Journey fan. Maybe Queen or Bon Jovi.. thinking of the different songs for bouquet toss, cake cutting, etc. has really been lots of fun!
"Don't Stop Believin" by Journey for us. We hear it all the time, and wanted a fun last song!
LOL...didn't read that it'd already been posted. Still LOVE it!!
It's a bit of a tradition in my group of friends to have Sweet Caroline as the last song. It's great for getting everyone up and out of their seats and singing along on the dancefloor. It always ends the night on a high note! :)
i really like "here's to the night" by eve six and "living on a prayer" by bon jovi. the first one is slower, the last one is more upbeat allowing everyone to leave on an uptempo note. we're still deciding on which we like best.
I like the idea of I've Had the Time of My Life or Sweet Caroline. Both great party tunes!!
We did "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey. Here what it looked like... lol!

I did Save the Last Dance for Me by Michael Buble. It was awesome! Everyone was on the dance floor. Our DJ traditionally does a "Grab a Beer and Sing" song for the last one. We went from Michael Buble to Friends in Low Places. Everyone formed a huge circle around us and sang. It was very nice.
Happy planning!
our tradition for last dance song for weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs is new york new york. i don't know why, but that's how it's always been at all of our family functions. we love it!
We used "Kiss me, I'm sh*tfaced" by the Dropkick Murphys. A little non-traditional, but there's nothing like everyone holding on to each other swaying and singing :D
We did "Toes in the water, A$$ in the sand" cause that's where we were going next for our honeymoon! It was perfect!
Have a few on your list for the last song. You may want to change it when you see who will be dancing with you. Some of your older guest may leave around 10:30 and if you want them to see it you may want to adjust your time
Our last "dance" song will be DMB Crush... although we are hoping that it turns into a big sing along with all our besties :) the last song played will easily be NY, NY as we are HUGE yankee fans.. I haven't listened to it since i was at the clinching game of the ACLS. We are bringing the Yanks into a lot of our wedding planning... no one would expect any less from us.
Right now I'm thinking we're going to use Save the Last Dance for Me by Michael Buble - but the guy hasn't signed off on it yet so who knows!
@Nada, I love that song Forever. Too bad it's by Chris Brown, abuser extraordinaire! But we will be using that song too.
We are thinking about doing either "Stairway to Heaven" because we both love that song, and that was always the way high school dances ended and makes me laugh...
or DMB's "Tripping Billies"--eat, drink, and be marry...except I will be screaming eat, drink, and be married!
or DMB's "Two Step"--an all time favorite--"celebrate we will, cuz life is short but sweet for certain!"
Obviously I need to think about it more and choose!
I love Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" (even though I'm not a blonde, lol)!
I attended a wedding where "Piano Man" by Billy Joel was the last song and we all sang/yelled along. It was great!
