I need some suggestions and recommendations on what I should do with my last name! My fiancé has a hyphenated last name like this: maternal-paternal. My last name is a single paternal last name, which I really like. I want us to feel like a family and have a “family name” but I’m not sure the best way… If I’m having a hyphenated last name I would like to include my own last name. It doesn’t ring well with his last name, or either part. I’m thinking I may just take his paternal last name; however his position is that it’s only half of his last name, not his full last name. Any thoughts? Help!

Oh wow! That sounds a bit complicated! Have you considered keeping your paternal last name as your middle name? So it would be (first) (original last name) (hyphenated-name)?

marryingjandk: A classmate of mine had this. Think of Amy Jones marrying Brian Smith-Young. She moved her maiden name to her middle name and then took her husband’s paternal last name (so Amy Jones Young) the kids all have Jones as a middle and Young as the last. Husband still kept Smith-Young, but ended up going as Brian Young socially. It may work well for you.

marryingjandk: I am thinking his dad’s last name as well, but have you asked him?
If I could have chosen between my parents two last names when I was younger, I would have chosen my mom’s over my dad’s any day.

I’d take his full name, but that’s just me. 🙂
