- Wedding: March 2014 - Brazil Room
First of all, yay! I’m married. Just got married March 30th and I’m so very happy 🙂
Before we got married, we discussed in length what I was going to do with my name. I decided to do something unconventional and make his last name my middle name, so my name would be firstname hislastname mymaidenname. I was set on it. I was sure of it. He was fine with it. And damnit if it didn’t take one day of everyone calling me Mrs. hislastname that I did a complete 360 and decided that I really would rather be firstname mymaidenname hislastname. Ugh.
Well in California, you have to decide on your name change in advance of your wedding and cannot amend it (unless there is a spelling error). So my marriage license has the original plan for the name change on it. I know I need to do a petition of name change through the courts now.
My question: Do I need to change my name legally to the one on my marriage certificate first (social security, DMV) and then go through the court process to change it again? Or can I just jump straight to the court process?
Thanks for your help!
