nearly 11 weeks pregnant and in need of advice while I wait for my dr’s office to return my call.
Before Thanksgiving I was put on a generic for Zofran to help ease extreme morning sickness that prevented me from keeping anything down. it works. Incredibly thankful for that- but when my midwife said to be careful about constipation, she wasn’t kidding! She told me another patient of hers had to be hospitalized for severe constipation at 11 weeks on the same medication because she also couldn’t keep anything down.
I’ve had a miserable week or so struggling with the same issue. I’ve tried prunes, drinking a butt-load of water every day, adding flavorless fiber to my diet and drinks, exercise. The works. So far nothing has helped with constipation and I have to keep taking the meds at least once a day due to bad morning sickness. It’s been terrible. :/
I read some gentle laxatives are okay for pregnant women, but for me those brands didn’t work at all. I finally had to take an enema as I wasn’t going and felt I would end up in the hospital as well even reducing the dose of Zofran to once a day instead of three times a day.
I’ve read mixed reviews on enemas and laxatives in early pregnancy. If I did go to the hospital for constipation, wouldn’t they give me the same thing there? I feel it may be one of those things to where it’s WORSE to remain poo-free for days instead of taking a saline enema and getting it out of your system. Thoughts? Advice?
Edit: apparently some doctors have this list as being ‘safe’ for 1st and 2nd trimesters: Colace, Dulcolax, Fibercon, Fleets Enemas, Metamucil, Milk of Magnesia, Senokot, Surfak.
