I will certainly be praying for you! When will you know by?
that's the real kicker! it could be anytime in the next year! ugh!
Sending positive vibes your way! My fiance is an engineer as well, and his company often does lay-offs. We have avoided a lay-off so far. Crossing my fingers for you! What kind of engineer are you?
thanks everyone! i talked to my boss and am starting to feel better, he doesn't really know anything but suspects we won't be affected. i hope this is true!!
@valhalla - i'm a mechanical engineer, what does your FI do?
I'm in the same boat - our company announced lay-offs as well and initiated our notice through the "WARN Act" . That was last week.
(Oil & Gas Engineering)
600 people between now and Dec. Scary stuff, but certainly the nature of the industry.
good vibes coming your way!
You're right though--new engineers are the least likely to be laid off. It's pretty much the only reason I felt safe throughout our downsizing (even though it was only 5%). Not only are you cheap labor, but they've invested so little in you so far (insurance, 4o1K, etc). Not to mention, but laying off new engineers is really bad for the company, PR-wise, because you didn't graduate college too long ago, versus coworkers in your 40's. I know it's not necessarily like this with other types of jobs, but seems to be the case in engineering. Unless you're talking construction. Every single one of my architectural engineering friends got laid off but found other jobs.
Hi OttawaBride,
My FI is a computer engineer and has been working full-time since graduating about three years ago. Several of his friends have been laid off in other departments, but he has avoided it so far. He seems to think he is safe in his department, and his boss hasn't given him any indication otherwise.
One of my girlfriends is a mechanical engineer and she has been okay so far too. I understand the situation differs depending on the company however.
Stay positive!
thanks for the positive vibes ladies!! i am feeling much better after your comments, and talking to my boss. i just hate that i have to sit and wonder for the next year!!
@querida - sending positive vibes your way too!! :)
:) Thanks! I'm feeling ok about it right now... I'm on a busy project.
With all these good vibes going back and forth, we should all be golden! ;)
Update: I made it through the first round in one piece!!!! Yay! :)

ugh. yesterday the company i work for announced major layoffs. i am hopeful it won't be me because i am an entry level engineer, and therefore "cheap" labor. please send me good vibes!!! we just bought a house, we really can't afford for this to happen now :(
