We were trying to avoid it but due to budget it looks like this will be where we have our reception. I know some used the "Gym" Im saying cultural hall because well,,,,,,its only about half gym sized in our ward and has carpeting and those lovely brown textured walls. Id love to know what you ladies did to hide, camoflauge, or spruce. The only idea ive come up with is Tulle (and lots of it) Ideas please!!!!?

I'm not LDS, but I've been to a few receptions for them. The best ones are when you just spruce it up. If you draw attention to the centerpieces on the table, and maybe hang some pictures (with fishing line, bunting, or even propped on easels), no one else really pays attention to the walls. The last once we went to was so elegant this way - it just worked.

So the walls were just left untouched? Were the lights dimmed or anything?

I'm not LDS either but I'm rocking the Fellowship hall reception too. Mine is ALL white, ceilings, floors, windows, so how I am trying to take away from that is bright colored table clothes and cool centerpieces. Mine is during the middle of the day so no dimmed lights or anything. Just trying to make it less glaringly obvious that it is a fellowship hall. My wedding is also right after Christmas and so we are using some large christmas trees simply decorated to add some more color to the room.

If you can get it trellis works well to cover up walls.  You can then decorate it however you want.

hey im LDS and hoping to get married in october, my FI and most of his family are practising members however only me and my mum are members on my side, and a few of my family members are quite against our religion, so we've decided to have the ceremony there but have the reception in a nearby hotel, saying this i have seen photos of several wedding receptions in cultural halls... the majority have looked great, i think it helps to have fabric, usually satin, drapped from the ceiling, if there are any dark wood walls etc try to disguise these by letting fabric drape from the ceiling down the wall, perhaps adding flowers half way down the fabric...im sure youll do a great job if i can be of any help dont hesitate
