Mni-vent, sorry! So, I'm sitting here waiting for a movie from iTunes to download...and I just finished painting my nails.
I'm looking at my left hand and it frustrates me so badly! I'm left handed, so painting my left hand's nails is super hard. Not only is it hard, but my right hand ALWAYS looks some better than my left. It never really used to bother me, but since I've been engaged and have a ring on my left hand I notice it more. Even though I've been engaged since last April, I still get the *hand grab* "Let me see your ring!" occasionally. It's just one reason why I don't like being left-handed...
A plus -I'm different from everyone in my family :)
So, left-handed bees, what are some things you love or don't love about being left-handed?!
Having to use a left handed scissors! Righties really don't work for me
I'm left-handed. I hate it when I smear what I just wrote and the side of my hand gets dirty.
Because I am also left-handed, the nails on my right hand always look better. I guess it's because I use my left hand for everything and they are always breaking or chipping while the nails on my right hand grow out really nice and strong. It really bothers me when people ask to see my ring but there's nothing I can do about it
>:(
@megin: AAh I hate that too! then I'm paranoid that i'll accidently touch my face and the ink will get on my face and I won't know about it lol.
I was sooo happy when they came out with electric pencil sharpeners! I have always hated sharpening pencils because your pencil never sharpens right, and you always have to bang your knuckles when the pencil sharpener is mounted on the wall for right-handed people to use! The other thing is scissors-everyone else is right-handed in my family too! I always wished I could make nice posters, but yeah-I always smudge everything with my left hand, so I guess I will never make a living at making pretty caligraphy. :(
@sasstgrn -I actually can use right handed scissors, but only if I have to!
@megin -oh goodness!!! Don't even get me started on that..ha! I've been taking notes all day, and pen is all over my pinky!
@creativeplanner -exactly! I tired to make a cute poster for my classroom at church the other day...I ended up letting another girl do it :)
I'm a lefty! I hated those desks with armrests when we were in school. I would get in trouble for sitting sideways in the desk!
Another lefty here and I agree, writing is the worst! I smudge everything and more gets on my hand than the paper.
I'm a lefty too!
I always hated the "smudge factor" the PP's are talking about... I also hated the spiral notebooks and three ring binders! The spirals and rings were always in the way when you were trying to write!! UGHHH!
I really like that I'm ambidextrous though :)
Since I grew up in a right handed world there are a lot of things I can do with my left AND right hand. So I feel kind of special. And I played softball all my life and was always the first baseman because I could reach out farther from the base with my glove on my right hand (I didn't have to do the arm/body crossover with my glove). And I could bat both right and left, yay for lefties!
I'm a lefty and it's alright ;o)
Some of these will be repeats from PP, but here goes...
Things I love about being a lefty:
We are not common! Only about 10-15% of the world's population uses their left hand.
Higher I.Q. and better spatial awareness.
70% of the creative arts are dominated by lefties.
Things I hate about being a lefty:
Bumping elbows at the dinner table (I always try to get the left corner!)
Scissors
Can openers
Cameras (the shutter button is always on the right)
Spiral notebooks and binders
Paper trimmers (guillotines) are made for right-handed people!
Rulers (Think about it...they are backward for a lefty.)
Tape measure (again backward for the left-handed person.)
Door handles (they turn right)
My iPhone (to "unlock" the screen you have to use your right hand...just too difficult to use the left hand with controlled motion. iPhone users know what I mean...includes the volume buttons.)
Blackberry (track-wheel thing to scroll is on the right.)
What I hate about being left handed: I was forced to be right handed by this "christian" school I went to so now I will forever have bad writing and I am uncoordinated as all get out... but the thing I noticed about lefties is problems sitting next to people at the table.... LOL But i LOVE the fact that my daughter is left handed and I will never try to change that =)
@vboutwell: Seriously????? wtf
@vaness13181: The elbows at the dinnertable get me everytime!
@vboutwell: If this is not a promo I am sure you would have better luck making your own post, people are usually willing to help but posting it in someone elses thread is kinda rude. :)
@cyndistar3: Agree with you here! If I have a left-handed child, I plan to buy all the lefty stuff I can for him/her in school. Ruler, sharpener, binders, notebooks, and scissors!!!! That stinks about being forced to use the other hand :(
mrs.tobe -I forgot about writing in binders...it's always so awkward! d
The dinner table situation is pretty awkward too!
@cyndistar -My mom said she used to put my crayons in my right hand and I would look at her and grunt and put them in my left!! ha, I guess I've always been stubborn! ;)
Just think how special and adaptable we are ladies! That takes skill ;)
@vaness13181: I think left handed people are awesome because it is different than "normal" and if she is going to be naturally left handed there is no way I would do anything than support it because it does suck because it is too late to go back to what was natual to me =(
@vaness13181: Hahah I always use a tape measure upside-down and my SO always makes fun of me for it. I'm so used to reading them upside down now that I don't even notice it anymore!
I love my laptop because I can use the trackpad with my left hand and it doesn't know the difference...computer mice are a different story. I just got used to using them in my right hand because I don't want to have to go and reverse the button settings so I can use it left-handed every time I go to a shared/public computer.
@laktolkr: I don't remember a lot about my child days but I remember being in pre-k and they teachers would get angry at me for using my left hand... someone was always standing behind me waiting to "correct me" when I didn't use my right hand =(
Everyone should try the papermate profile pens. They are the bomb and don't smear much!
@helenberrycrunch: UGH! Yes! In college, I would scour the room for the lefty desks. If I couldn't find one, I always had a clipboard with me, and would just take notes in my lap. I would rather deal with that then use the right-handed desk and have to sit all awkward.
@kimmylyn:I had them from first grade on. It was hell. I actually had long table things in college. And I sat in a big rolly chair.
Lefty here! I enjoy being in the same group as Barack Obama and Jack the Ripper. :D
Scissors have always been my biggest problem. I have serious issues with cutting things, especially when I was in elementary school and the "scissors" they provided were a complete joke. I could never finish craft projects, I had to give them to another student or the teacher.
The smearing issue is probably another of the worst things. Over time I've learned to write with the paper completely sideways (so, for a regular 8 1/2x11 sheet, the 11 inch side would be facing me), and all the righties get really confused when they see me writing like that. At least my hand is clean!
Otherwise though, yeah. I enjoy being different and using left-handedness as an excuse to get good end seats at the table. :P
I forgot about desks with armrests - those were the worst.
As an adult lefty, I hate dry erase boards! It is so hard to write on them without erasing everything I've just written and having marker all over my arm!
My brother and i are both left handed, so we know how you feel! But, we were taught to write by right handed people (our parents), so I actually dont' smear my hand much cuz I write like a right handed person (don't curve my wrist like most lefties do). Seriously, some people that I went to school with for years didn't even know I was left handed until I was doing something and the randomly paid attention one day, and then argued with me that i wasn't always left handed!!
I think its super cool too cuz my niece (on hubs side of ALL right handed people) is left handed, so I get to teach her things growing up! My SIL freaked out when she realized it, and was talking to me about it, and I told her not to worry cuz I could help her, and she had this puzzled look on her face when I said that. I was like, umm I'm left handed. She had never realized it!
While its a pain in the arse sometimes, I love being different then most people :)
Another lefty checking in!! I hate trying to sign for a purchase...the machines are NOT set up for a lefty, I always hit my elbow on something!!
I hated the lefty scissors, so I've only used right-handed scissors since elementary. Trying to write in a journal is ROUGH, that inner crease and spiral/bound notebooks are the pits!!
@MrsSl82be: I don't curve my wrist, but my pinky will still get ink on it.
@MrsSl82be: I don't curve my wrist, but my pinky will still get ink on it.
I hate scissors! I've never had left handed scissors, so I've always had to use the right handed ones - I hate the ones that are supposed to be contoured to fit your hand, but they're contoured for RIGHT hands and they just hurt my hand really bad!
I used to have a TON of trouble with smudging, but like @Minutiae, I've adapted and I write with the paper almost completely sideways, which seems to help. I still usually have at least a little ink mark on the side of my pinky, though! :)
I'm a leftie! Both my brother and I are, parents aren't but my grandmother is as well. DH is also a leftie so I'm curious to see which hand our kids will use.
I'm with everyone on the smudging ink thing. A very frustrating part of writing thank you's and what not. Luckily, I use my right hand to cut though.
I hate that I can't use a peeler easily! For whatever reason they just don't work when you use your left hand, it frustrated me to the point where my mom bought me a left handed peeler!
I have gotten pretty good at a few ambidextrous things, I use scissors with my right hand and I can paint my left hand nails pretty well. I think I golf righty and bat lefty, even though I don't do those often I find it entertaining.
@MrsSl82be: I don't curve my wrist when I write either! People I've known for years are one day out of nowhere like "I didn't know you were left handed!"
I also get a lot of: "You have really nice handwriting, for a lefty" Like all lefties have bad handwriting?? What gives??
I used to be a journalist, and I hated writing in those skinny little notebooks because there was nowhere to rest my hand. I eventually gave up and started carrying around legal pads.
@vaness: The better spatial awareness thing cracks me up sometimes because I have notoriously awful depth perception :(. I think the lefty gods left me out of that one.
@cyndistar: That happened to my mom, too. She now hunches over when she writes because she used to have to hide that she was writing with her left hand :(.
I also get a lot of: "You have really nice handwriting, for a lefty" Like all lefties have bad handwriting?? What gives??
I agree wtf ! hahaha I love being a lefty it makes me more unique then I already am~!
