So we are getting married in Greece… We are both Greek and gone through the steps to get legally married in the Greek Orthodox Church in greece. Now what does that mean for us back home in Canada? Is our marriage recognized? Do we have to do a civil ceremony in Canada?
I have a presumption but can’t find a straight answer.

Marriages that are legally performed in a foreign country are usually valid in Canada, and you do not need to register them in Canada.
You can contact your closest Service Canada office:

I’m sure any legal marriages performed overseas are recognized anywhere. I had a destination wedding too and it’s recognized in both countries that I am currently residing, I dont have to register again.

youll need to check into the specifics of both Greece and Canada. We are getting married in a different country and are going to legally be married either before we go or right after we get back in our hometown’s townhall to avoid the messiness of the legalities of our destination.

julies1949: a bit late, but thank you! you are absolutely right ~ our marriage will be recongized in Canada 🙂 That being said it have been ‘fun’ getting our marriage license in Greece — and we both have parents that have citizenship in Greece. The amount hoops we had to jump through is crazy!
