I just had my first (and only) cake tasting this week and was quoted for my cake design. Problem is the fiance’s parents were going to pay for the cake. The cake is expensive I won’t lie, however it is fairly priced for the type of specialized decorating skill it requires. I knew a ball park of how much it would be all along and let my fiance give that info to his parents. Now he has given them the official quote and the mother said that “they’ll see.” I told myself that I would pay the difference of what they give us, but if they are giving us like $100, then unfortunately I can’t just pay the difference. I actually care about the cake design. It is important to me…any advice?
Soooo how much did you pay for your wedding cake? Post pictures of it or the inspiration for it!

How much are you being charged? $8-$10 per person is normal in my neck of the woods. Double that for silvia weinstock or Ron Ben Israel.

We’re in the process of doing cake tastings and such. Depending on add ons, most places around here are about $4/serving with an additional delivery fee. Some of the places don’t charge extra in terms of decorating unless you want fondant or something, and even then, it seemed pretty reasonable to me.
Why are you only doing one cake tasting? There are lots of great cake bakers out there, and you might be able to get a better deal elsewhere.

This was our cake. It was $575 which included delivery/set up of the cake. It tasted amazing with 3 different kinds of cake : Red Velvet with vanilla butter cream, Chocolate with Chocolate butter cream and Marble with Vanilla butter cream. This cake fed 115-130 people and not every ate cake so we had tons left over for about a week and a half after the wedding (had to keep giving it away to friends/family). We did cake tastings at 2 different places but mainly the first one because we were recommeded them by a friend but I knew I wanted to go with the bakery I chose as they have tons of experience and we love their cakes and baked goods.

We had a scrumptious naked strawberry shortcake cake! It ended up costing I think almost $7 a slice/per person but it was so worth it cause it was so delicious!

craigslistgirl: Well there’s only one lady in town that is comfortable and that has the time for the kind of decorating method. Her pricing is comparable though. I was in contact with another bakery two hours away and it was about the same.

I can’t remember how much ours came to. I think about $650 for 100 people. We had two flavors – chocolate cake with Oreo buttercream and white cake with raspberry buttercream filling. The Oreo layers were the best 🙂 no charge for delivery, because we were inside her “range.”

Our cake was $200, which I think was a steal! We had 3 flavors – carrot cake with cream cheese filling, white cake with strawberry filling and chocoalte cake with a chocolate mousse filling, all frosted with pale pink better cream.

We got our wedding cake from a the local bakery that we typically use for holiday desserts and special events. It was DELICIOUS– chocolate cake with raspberry mousse. I think we paid around $1000 for it. We served the botton 4 tiers to 160 people and kept the top one.

MrsHistory-Bee: I feel like cakes are more picture props than anything– even if they taste good, I don’t feel like many people savor the cake– especially for $12/ serving.
I know this is not what you’re likely looking for, but this was our “cake”
I wanted something more fun– they were a huge hit, elegantly done, and were like $1.50 each.

Did I miss a description of what kind of cake you are looking for? What is making it more expensive/person?
Cakes are expensive to make! That is for sure. I recently made a three tier for a friend, and it cost me 150.00 just in ingredients. Not to mention my time involved, pans, etc.
Money conversations are hard, and awkward. But I think asking the future in laws what they are able to put towards the cake will at least give you a starting point. Also maybe looking online with them at some bakery sites and prices will help. Most do not understand what the cakes cost these days, everything is more expensive than what we think it should be.

Ours was made by a family friend. She very kindly only charged us for the ingredients so it cost £200 and fed 200 people! We had 3 flavours: chocolate, coffee and walnut and fruit cake. 🙂
