Hey gang! I know there have to be some lurkers out there. Let's trade details.
Our date is in August 2009 at a private residence.
Our photographer is the gorgeous Jessica Johnston Photography (www.jessica-johnston.com). They are amazing and I totally recommend.
Our colors are natural colors like moss and rafia and brown since our ceremony will be in a wooded area and our reception will be outside as well.
And that's about all we have planned so far.....
Share with me your details! :)
Hey there,
I just had my wedding this past August - the 23rd to be exact. Loved everything!
Colors were burnt orange, peach, ivory, brown and a little bit of pink. I know I am crazy when it comes to mixing. haha
I do own a company in metro detroit that does wedding decor/flowers if you are interested.
Jessica Johnston is a good choice.
Karen Sas (http://www.sasography.com/) took our photos and she did a really good job for really good price.
Hi Detroit Brides!
I am also planning an August 2009 wedding. We are getting married at the Gem Theatre in downtown Detroit.
We have also booked Jessica Johnston Photography! Our e-pics are next week. I'm so excited!
So far our color scheme has many different colors with variations on hues of navy, raspberry, gold and charcoal.
Hm,
We're getting married in Plymouth in June '09. Our colors are blue and green. I'm using Diane of www.dkdesignshawaii.com for my flowers and FI's boutonerre (ala Miss Pineapple), but we're still looking for a florist to do the rest of the flowers.
We're using First Presbyterian of Plymouth for the ceremony (gorgeous old church) and the Plymouth Cultural Center for our reception. The room is pretty bland by itself, but they're flexible and inexpensive, so we can spruce it up a bit with decorations.
I'm really excited about our caterer: Vassel's Main Street Catering. Their prices are amazing, they're easy to work with (Darren is great), and their food looks wonderful (tasting coming up!).
And we're using an old friend, Mark Trupiano, for our photos. He's shot me my entire life and did both of my brothers' weddings.
Those are the big details so far.
Hey everyone! I'm excited to see some action on this board and to hear about others' plans.
We are getting married August 2, 2009, in Ann Arbor. We are having our ceremony at my church in town, and then traveling out to Manchester, MI, for the wedding reception at Sharon Mills Park. FoodArt is catering for us--we have to use them per the park contract but they are wonderful so I have no problems with this!
Our photographer is Amy Carroll (http://www.acarrollphotography.com/).
I'm still on the hunt for a florist, cake baker, and band (my FI is dead set on having a motown band). Any suggestions?
GoIzzy--what is your company?
GoIzzy is my company. :)
www.goizzy.com - look thru the pics
email is you have any questions and I will do my best to help you out.
Hey All!!!
We are getting married in Brownstown, in the church my family attends. Our reception will be at the Grecian Center in Southgate. Our photographer is absolutely wonderful, and her prices are even better! Her company is Paris Productions, if anyone is interested I'd be happy to send the link to our e-pics!
My FMIL will be doing the flowers, as she is very crafty. Our colors are fucsia, silver, and white with a tiny bit of black shimmery accents!
We got married on my parents farm in Richmond Michigan. It was a tented wedding our color were blue and green. The mayor of Richmond married us in front of all of our friends and family.
Our photography was through bella pictures, but they matched us with Angie Baan- she's great (if I had to do it again, I would have just hired her).
Our catering was done by Achatz, which was a great price for good food. Also a month before the wedding we sent one of our bulls in for processing and had steads made- a chef grilled the steaks to order. We ordered our cupcakes from Cake Novuea in Ann Arbor- they make beautiful cakes, but I have to say our cupcakes weren't very good. They were supposedly made the day before the wedding and they tasted old. They looked great though!
I did all of our flowers, ordering them wholesale online. Made my own bouquet.
I also ordered mother of the bride and groom corsages from Dkdesigns- they were beautiful. Another etsy seller made my bouquet charms- and builderstudio made out cake topper. :)
Hi Metro Detroit Ladies,
Our wedding is May 16, 2009 in Ann Arbor. We're having both the ceremony and the reception at the Michigan Union, which is special for us because we met at UM.
We're not 100% settled on a color scheme. I think it's going to be black and ivory with gold accents. We have a lot of vendors booked already, which is a relief. Right now, I'm looking for musicians to play at the ceremony. I'm hoping for a string quartet--maybe even music students to save a little money.
You know, Marueen, I also had a bad experience with Cake Nouveau. I ordered cupcakes from there for a bday party and they tasted stale! For that price, I'd expect a little more.
Maureen & Jessie...I'm totally with you! I've gotten cupcakes from Cake Nouveau twice and both times they tasted a bit burnt and dry. I thought maybe the first time was a fluke or a bad batch but nope. Very pretty, but not very tasty unfortunately!
Jessie...do you still live in Ann Arbor?
We're getting married in June 09. Ceremony at Nichols Arboretum (AA) reception at Huron River Club (Farmington).
We're attempting to do this wedding of 130 guests under 10K. We're doing a lot ourselves and friends are gifting their services as well. For instance, our officiant is a good friend of ours, our photographer is a pro friend of ours that has gifted his talent to us. Our soloist is another friend and our reception site was also gifted to us (minus food/bar/staff) We're very lucky people and very thankful. We're hiring someone to work our ipod for music and currently trying to find a celtic band for cocktail hour and a bakery that will make s'more cupcakes for us.
Colors are apple green, ivory and chocolate brown.
DIY projects:
Gocco STD's, Invites, and Thank you's OR Invitesite.com eco invites
Flowers - he's making my bouquet - so romantic. The rest of the flowers we're ordering bulk and doing ourselves.
Flower Vases - Hollowed out Birch made into vase. Also cutting green wine bottles into flower holders.
Ring Holder - My future Mother in Law is an potter and is throwing a "ring bowl" for the ring bearer to carry our rings on.
Cupcake stand - Making out of sliced birch
Photobooth - we're thinking about this, but this is just an add on if we have some extra money at the end.
@Grnmel: We're looking for a celtic band too! Let me know if you have any luck, and I'll do the same.
Hi everyone! :) I don't know how I missed this post the first time around, I'm glad it was bumped up! It's fun to hear about all of the Detroit area wedding details. I love Jessica Johnston! My photographer is Melissa Squires, otherwise known as "A Girl In Love"
We are getting married (ceremony and reception) at the Michigan Union in Ann Arbor, same as Jessie516! But two weeks later. :) Jessie, I feel like I have a million questions for Ken, and keep forgetting to write them all down so I can meet with him!
We are using Gwen's Cake Decorating, she does cakes out of her home ion Saline and her prices are amazing! I'm working on a post for this one this week or next week...
Our colors are robin's egg blue, a darker blue green, and black.
@ taffy - We're probably using Gwen too! She was personally recommended by our caterer (Vassel's Main Street) who used her for his wedding and loved her. Her prices are definitely right, though we haven't met with her yet. Website for those interested is: http://www.gwenscakedecorating.com/
Thanks for posting the link, I was in a rush earlier. :)
Gwen is super nice, her prices are AMAZING, and she's been making cakes for 30 years. We liked the cake so much at our tasting that I ordered Mr. Taffy's birthday cake from her last month. (and it was a way to try another flavor!!! sssh, don't tell Mr. T!) and we loved it. She doesn't freeze cakes, everything was really fresh and delicious. And she gives away a free anniversary cake! :)
Historybride - will definitely let you know, I've got a lead on a some UofM music students that are supposedly good and inexpensive. When I get more details will let you know.
Does anyone have a Gocco they would share or rent?
We're trying to decide if we really want to gocco the invites or not. It's a lot of labor, but more importantly, I'm not sure that my vision can be translated. I don't want to make the investment if it's going to be just another project that gets stored away.
Thanks!
Wow! So many Michigan brides!
Our day is June 5, 2009.
In Saline, MI (Ann Arbor's little known neighbor) at Weller's Carriage House.
Our photographer is Aruna B; arunabphotography.com and we are SO pleased with her work so far.
Our colors are "layered whites" with touches of yellow. :)
Stop by my blog and visit anytime my Michigan friends <3
I was sort of upset our cupcakes turned out the way they did. Courtney was incredibly nice ( and she competes on the food network) !! It seems that she's good at making things look good... it's just the freshness is compromised. She stressed we coudn't pick up the cupcakes until 4 p.m. the day before the wedding so they would stay "fresh-"I had one the night of the rehersal dinner and frankly, it tasted stale.
When we went in for the tasting it was great. Fresh made, everything was perfect! It's dissapointing. I have to say though, they looked really great. Very 1950's bakery style with cherries on top.
Yay, there are lots of AA area brides out there! :)
Grnmel--Where in the Arb are you getting married? I saw some pictures of a wedding in the Peony Garden in a magazine recently and it was gorgeous!!
Taffy--I also have a list about a mile long for the next time I speak to Ken at the Union. I feel like he's not great about returning email, although I think he's been wonderful other than that. Are you doing the food tasting in February? Maybe we'll see you there!
Lajune--Wellers is a beautiful venue. I went to a wedding there last summer and it was awesome. :)
Yes, I can't wait until the food tasting! Do you know which day it is? Ken was vague about it. I haven't had too many problems with him, but I usually make an appointment in person. I want to go again to look at the table cloth swatches lol!
Taffy, I didn't get a date from him either, he just said sometime in February. I hope it's not too close to my first dress fitting--I went with my best friend as her MOH a couple of years ago and it was delish!! I also need to get back in there and look at linens and stuff, as we hadn't really made any decisions on colors when we met with him last. Remind me, which rooms are you using? We've got the ceremony in Kunezel and reception in Pendleton.
We are doing the ceremony in Pendleton and reception in the Ballroom. Ken said that aisle runners are not good in the Pendleton room because of the slate floors being so slippery, so I think we are going to do rose petals. (You can use real ones there, yay!) I'm not sure if we are going to use the union's linens or bring in our own rentals- I know their chair covers are more expensive than most companies out there. If I don't like their colors for tablecloths we will rent from an outside source for sure.
Jessie516 - our ceremony will be in the Heathdale. We're going to stand in the council ring and our guests will stand behind in the half moon area. We thought about the Peony Garden, certainly would be easier for our guests, but we really love the Heathdale and the idea of being surrounded (literally) by trees. What magazine did you see the wedding in Peony?
Grnmel, Heathdale sounds like a beautiful place for a ceremony. Being surrounded by the trees will be so romantic! I believe the Peony Gardens wedding was in the Metro Detroit issue of The Knot magazine that I got a a wedding show a month or two ago.
Jessie516- we got an email "save the date" for the tasting at the union. It will be Sunday, March 1st at the league. It is $20 per person, I thought it was free!
Hi all,
New on this blog but I thought I'd jump in...it's nice to know I'm not alone in the planning. It feels very overwhelming right now. Our wedding is Aug 2009 at the Dearborn Inn. We're hoping to do the ceremony in my parents' backyard, but logistics are turning out to be difficult. And I live in CA, so I'm relying a lot on other people's opinions/suggestions (and my parents are doing a lot of legwork as well). I feel so behind not having settled a photographer or florist yet...but hopefully soon:)
Aww, my prom was at the Dearborn Inn and I went to a wedding there too. It's a really interesting venue, I'm a bit jealous!
Thanks so much for the tip on www.agirlinlove.com, I *love* the way she uses color. I've also spoken with arisingimages. Anyone have thoughts on them?
HistoryBride, my junior prom was also at the Dearborn Inn. It wasn't the greatest prom, but I've always remembered how pretty it was so it was on the top of my list when looking at locations.
For anyone else out there, the staff at Dearborn Inn are incredibly friendly and accomdating. We're having a mixed cultural wedding (Indian and British Isles mix), and they've been so easy about including catering from Indian restaurants. Of all the venue coordinators I spoke with, they were by far the friendliest and most on top of things. It makes me feel good to know that I'm getting married at a place where the staff is so welcoming.
I agree about Dearborn Inn! I have been there for some charity events, and some industry lunches for the holidays. I have never had a bad experience, and the staff is so friendly!

We are planning our wedding in Frankenmuth, MI at Sullivan’s Black Forest, in the loft area.
We don’t have any other vendors…yet
That’s where I was hoping to enlist some help. We recently moved out of Michigan and would love a few suggestions on photographers, travel services etc. Its very important to us to find companies that have great communication skills b/c most of our communication will be by phone/email. Thanks :)
Shmoli, When's your wedding? Without hesitation I would suggest Ray Anthony Photography. He's booked for our date, but has been incredibly helpful in finding someone else (which will likely be a friend/colleague of his from SoCal who is comping his travel). And after poring through a lot of websites, I'd say from my perspective he's the best in Michigan.

As someone else suggested to me in this forum, I also liked Melissa Squires (A Girl In Love), but her style was a bit too modern/edgy for us. Nonetheless she's very talented and super nice.
I totally feel you on the phone/email communication thing. I live in California. Our holiday visit to Michigan was packed with vendor meetings...I still haven't found everyone yet, but let me know if you want other suggestions.
My boudoir photos are being taken by Melissa of A Girl in Love Photography!! She was already taken (and out of our budget) for our wedding day (June 13th) but I was so lucky to be able to book/afford her for some special photos for my HTB (hubby-to-be). She is worth every penny... AND MORE!
I love reading about everyone's weddings! I'm excited to hear about everyone's weddings at the Michigan Union because I used to work there. The weddings are always beatiful and lots of fun, and the staff is amazing. The event managers work so hard and do a really great job.
I'm getting married at Cobblestone Farms in Sept 2010. So far away! I love the outdoor lawns and the 2 story reception space. And I've booked my caterer, Zingerman's, which I'm also really excited about. (Full disclosure, I work there. So I know I'd never be satisfied with anything else :-) ).
I also drooled over a girl in love's photography, but I suspect she'll be too expensive for us, we are on a very tight budget. If anyone knows a student looking to start shooting, throw their name my way...
Lilac Avenue, what a great venue! My sister's friend got married at Cobblestone Farm last summer and it was really nice. How awesome that you're using Zingerman's for catering!! Their food is amazing, we eat at the Roadhouse often. We thought about getting our cake through the bakehouse, but it certainly wasn't in our budget.
teris- I did my boudoir shoot with Melissa a few weeks ago, and it was sooo much fun!!! She is so talented, but also so nice and fun to work with. Let us know how the shoot goes! :)
Hey everyone. We're getting married late August 2010 at Cobblestone Farm in A2 (trying to work on the details from Minneapolis, which is proving to be interesting/stressful), so glad to hear that others like that venue. Any details anyone can share about attending or having a wedding there is appreciated :). Probably going with earthy green and purple for colors (hopefully moss and hydrangeas will be present in accents/decorations.) Definitely planning to have a outside cocktail hour after the outside ceremony with lawn games. Not positive about caterers yet, but will probably go with Carlsons. I'd like to do flowers myself, any suggestions about where to get nice wildflower-type bouquets/bunches? Does the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market sell cut flowers?
