- Wedding: May 2014
So I noticed when I got on here that I used it to gather advice for some difficulties I’m having in planning my wedding right off the bat… Which is fine, because this board is a great place to garner advice from fellow brides. But I also came to notice I wasn’t talking about anything happy on here, just the parts that are stressing me out (what to tip vendors, my grandmother wants to wear her wedding dress to my wedding, etc)… So now I just want to do a fun happy post about all the good things for my wedding, or the problems that I have already solved.
I am a non-denominational christian and my fiance is catholic, so we are getting married in his church with both his priest and my pastor co-officiating the ceremony. His priest was totally fine with this and even offered to come to my family’s church if I wanted. I appreciated this gesture, particularly because I did a fantastic job freaking myself out after reading very extreme cases of catholics marrying non catholics online. Seriously, if you are in a similar situation do not research it, just talk to your’s/your fiance’s priest right away. However, I chose that we would be married in his church for two reasons. First, it’s beautiful. Not cathedral-marble-massive-grand beautiful… But small and simple beautiful. The sanctuary is shaped like a big fan or piece of pizza (excuse the rudimentary example) and made of this really warm dark wood with burgundy carpet and a small area of stained glass just behind the altar. The walls are a warm creamy color and lined with wooden carvings of apostles and scenes from the bible. Truly beautiful. The second reason is that his church has a hall on the other side of the parking lot from the church… It was built in 2005 so it is fairly new… And essentially a massive room with wood floors, plain white concrete walls, and two chandeliers. A nice big blank canvas.
I’ve already bought my wedding dress, and it’s expected in the salon in August. It’s beautiful head to toe lace. I always thought I’d go for a ball gown or A-Line dress… But this is a fit and flare. It’s not quite a mermaid style, and the flare out is very subtle and gradual. It has a somewhat high neckline. I won’t share a single picture though… I have one of the most unique names ever and if you google me I somehow think you’d have good chances of finding any pictures I post online, etc. My only current problem is while at the salon they had to get the specific hem length… Due to the style of the dress the seamstress at the salon will be unable to shorten it. So I committed to wearing a 3-3 1/2 in heel for the wedding, thinking this was reasonable… I cannot find a decent pair of 3 inch heels anywhere. It’s all 2.75 or 3.75. I really want a pair of plain satin heels… And I would really like them to be dyeable or already be a light pink satin. I’m all a fan for brides who wear pretty/funky/bright shoes under their dresses and want to decorate the pair myself. So I’m still searching.
We haven’t ordered the bridesmaid dresses yet, but I have picked them out. I asked the salon about a specific dress I saw online from a brand they carried, and they said they would call me when they got it in. When it came in I took my mom and sister back down to the salon so we could look at it, and then decided I wanted my sister to try on that dress and a few others… But she never got beyond trying that first dress. Right then and there I decided it was the dress, held it up next to mine and they look great together. So when we go dress “shopping” in a month or two all my bridesmaids know that I already picked the dress, and all they need to do is get measured and place their orders. I have a slight issue with two bridesmaids… One of them is my fiance’s sister in law who lives in South Carolina and probably won’t be able to make it up for the shopping… So she is going to find a seamstress in her area and have the seamstress take her measurements, then the day we go to the salon she is going to call and give them her measurements and credit card number so her dress is ordered with everyone else’s. The other issue is my cousin… She is in refusal to do anything for her own wedding, let alone be involved in mine. If I had realized she would be this bitter I probably wouldn’t have wanted to ask her to be in the wedding at all… But girls in my family are born in pairs, and she is my partner and childhood friend. However, she hasn’t bothered showing up for anything I have done for my wedding… She didn’t come to the bridal show, she didn’t come when I invited the girls over to watch wedding movies and make pageant style sashes for when we go dress shopping, or anything. I don’t think she will bother coming when we go buy the dresses for my wedding… So I think I’m just going to order her a 0 (same size as her wedding dress, and even a 0 is too big on her) and leave it at that.
I have two junior bridesmaids… Remember how I said girls in my family are born in pairs? They were the only two old enough to be in the wedding that weren’t originally included… so I decided to add them. My aunt and uncle just went through a divorce and it’s been really hard on their girls… So even though I thought it was excessive to ask them, it was totally worth it to see their faces light up and have them throw their arms around me when I asked. One will be 12 and the other will be 7 or 8 by the wedding, so they are too small to wear the exact same dress as the bridesmaids… Instead my mom and I found really pretty dresses at Kohls. They are the same color as the skirt on the bridesmaids dress, with an ivory sash and ivory roses on the sash (the top of the bridesmaid dresses are ivory). I think they were about $30 each after our coupons. My mom and I are holding onto the dresses though, and not telling my cousins or anyone else that we bought them yet. Next year in January or February I will have them try them on and take them to a seamstress. We bought both of them big so they won’t have a chance of being too small by next year.
We just ordered my flower girl’s dress this week too. She’s 5… but when we measured her to order the dress her chest, waist, and hip measurements were smaller than the smallest size they offer… Which should fit a 3-4 yr old! Her height measure just an inch taller than the 4-5 yr old size though, and 3 inches shorter than the 5-6 yr old size… So we ordered the 5-6 year old. She might hit a growth spurt, and it can always be altered. It’s the most adorable dress, it reminds me of Wendy in Peter Pan… It’s so delicate and simple. It should be here sometime next week, and I can’t wait! I’ve been eyeing this dress for her since before I was even engaged.
Now for the guys… I’m up in the air here. My dress as well as the top of the bridesmaid dresses are ivory… But super light ivory. So light of ivory that I initially thought they were white. So we are going to take a men’s white dress shirt when we do the bridesmaid dresses and hold it up to my dress and the girls’ dresses. If there isn’t a stark contrast then my fiance will wear a gray suit with a white vest, white shirt, and white tie with a pink rose bout. The other guys will wear gray dress pants, gray vests, white dress shirts, pink ties, and all white baby’s breath bouts.
By the way, the flowers for my wedding are almost all baby’s breath. My bouquet will probably be 2 dozen blush roses spotted with baby’s breath, but other than that, my flower girl, and my fiance every other flower will be baby’s breath.
Speaking of that, I asked the florist about making a wand for my flower girl… She quoted me $70! As if! I am making it myself out of silk flowers. I figured if they are silk flowers then it will survive a boisterous 6 year old. And then she can also keep it after.
Our cake! I am so excited for it!!! It’s going to be four tiers, and each tier will be three layers. So it’ll have a somewhat taller and narrower look. Not super tall and narrow, just slightly taller than the average cake. It’s going to be textured buttercream frosting with beading around the base of the tiers… Blush sugar roses… I am making my own cake topper to look like the silhouette cake toppers that are all over etsy… And here comes the best part… The cake flavor is just white cake… BUT THE INSIDE OF MY CAKE IS GOING TO BE PINK!!! Remember how I said that each tier would be three layers? So the bottom layer of each tier will be dark pink, the middle layer will be medium, and the top layer in each tier will be light pink. So each piece of cake will be pink ombre on the inside. I am not telling a soul beyond our parents that, it’ll be such a fun little surprise. The bottom tier has a raspberry filling, then lemon, then pineapple, and the top is raspberry again. Additionally my fiance really liked the strawberry filing that was, quite frankly, disgusting. But hey, he liked it! So as a wedding gift I am ordering a second cake in the shape of a guitar filled with that strawberry filling for him. Right now he thinks the strawberry filling is in the wedding cake (somehow by the end of the appointment he managed to get the strawberry in the 2nd and 3rd tiers of the cake), but I thought this was a good way to get that strawberry out of the wedding cake and also to surprise him with something sweet. By the way, he loved them lemon and pineapple as well, so it’s not like I picked two flavors he despises in place of that strawberry.
Our caterer is really nice and very reasonable… Our buffet will be fresh garden salad, three dressings, rolls and butter, almond rice pilaf, red garlic roasted mashed potatoes, green beans almondine, penne with meatballs, and chicken marsala. It’s $11.65 a person, and we already tasted the food, it’s fabulous. Then it’s $1.50 per person to add table cloths and linen napkins, and from there another .70 for silverware. The plastic dinner plates he offers look like real china, you can’t tell the difference until you go to pick it up. The other fabulous thing is that he has a ton of candle holders, centerpiece vases, and centerpiece mirrors… and we are allowed to use as many of them as we want completely free of charge. That is a massive saver for us.
My fiances grandmother bakes cookies for every wedding (she baked close to 800 for his brother’s wedding), so we are going to have a table set up with coffee and tea service (free with our caterer) and cookie plates for people to munch on throughout the reception.
Our DJ is a fabulous guy and he is doing the uplighting for our reception at half price, only $200. No particular reason, other than I mentioned that we were trying to really stay on a budget. I thought that was very nice of him.
I love our photographer too. He doesnt charge by the hour, or limit the timing on the pictures at all. His only limitation is that he will not go to salons to take pictures the morning of the wedding. But he will come either to the house or the church to take the pictures of my mom zipping my dress, etc. And he stays at the reception until we leave ourselves. I’m very confident with him.
Aaaaaaaaand… what else? We are doing bubbles for our send off and possibly buying bubble guns for our flower girl and ring bearer… Half my pew bows will be burlap lace bows, the other will be cones of sheet music that my fiance wrote filled with baby’s breath (alternating of course)… I plan to walk down the aisle to a piano adaptation of a song my fiance wrote for me. I am making a family “wedding album” with pictures of every family member on their wedding days along with the date to be displayed at the reception. We are probably giving out glow sticks during the reception ( a compromise because I wanted a sparkler send off, and my fiance worried about the sparklers when he has so many out of control cousins). My mom and sister already planned that my bachelorette party will be up at Cedar Point and I am SO excited because I love roller coasters.
OH! The part I am actually looking forward to most right now… After the rehearsal dinner he and his guys are going off for his bachelor party… The girls and I are going to go TP his house and put a sign in the yard that says “the groom is here”. His mom already okayed this as long as his sister and mine clean it up the day after the wedding! Earlier that day we are going to decorate my house with crepe paper and balloons and a sign that says “the bride is here”. And if my parents buy the house theyve had their eye on, that means both houses will be on the same street in the same neighborhood!
What’s your wedding in the making looking like so far?
