I'm starting to look into getting my first tattoo (wrist, maybe hip?) and I need ideas! Let's see your tattoos and why you decided to get what you did!
I am such a wuss and indecisive person so I don't have any - plus my job doesn't allow visible tattoos, but if I ever got one, it'd probably be text.
I want one I can see, but I'm not supposed to have a visible one, either. However, I want a small one so a nice bangle would cover a wrist one at work...= ) I've been thinking about it a long time (2 years). And I really want one, I'm just not sure what yet!
I have five, but this is probably my favorite. I got it while recovering from an eating disorder I'd had for nearly ten years, as a reminder to respect my body and treat it right. It's on my upper back, just below my neck.

I have one on my right hip. It's the Social Distortion skeleton (They've been my favorite band for forever). That's the only one so far. But, I have a very strict rule: Because tattoos are permanent, I have to want it for ten years before I will get it.
I have a huge tattoo on my forearm that I am now paying my make-up artist to cover up for me on our wedding day!

Mine is a stick figure holding a daisy on the left side of my lower back. It has no meaning behind it. I just thought it would be a cute and fun tattoo to have! I love it!
Don't really have have any great pics of my tat, but here it is. It is my dad's initials inside of a star. My dad passed away suddenly on December 3, 2004, I got this done in February of 2005. On a Sunday night, my mom and my two best friends went to a tattoo place that was about to close and the artist was sooo nice. He redrew the design about five times until I was completely happy with it. My mom held my hand my friends made me laugh and the artist put on some funky 70's tunes to distract us all. I said a few choice curse words. I met my FI in May of 2005.
** Honestly, I love my tattoo, but I don't think I will ever get another one. I chose to get it in the place that I did because it would be well hidden. It would be my private memory that I only had to share with those that I wanted to. Now I am choosing to wear my hair down during my wedding, but I will not be covering it up with make up or anything like that. They are very painful, expensive, and no matter what, someone will end up judging you for it. Not that I care about that last part because I know that mine is meaningful and sentimental. If you choose to get one, just make sure it is something that will still be very very important to you still when you are older...

Here are 2 that I really like! = D I want simple since it's my first time!
Abbee-That's really sweet! I was with my sis and BIL when they got theirs! So, I'm not stranger to the fact they are expensive and hurt! People who judge should really judge themselves.
Mine is a butterfly on the back of my left shoulder. I got it on the one-year anniversary of my mom's death, in her memory. When I was 17, I got my first tattoo (a crow on my hip), and when I called my mom to tell her "I got a tattoo!", her response was, "So did I!" My mother, at 54-years-old, got her first tattoo, and proceeded to get 3 or 4 more. She used to love butterflies and had a bunch of butterfly sculptures and wall-hangings in her bedroom. I also have a memories of going to various butterfly flight exhibits with her. The artist who did the tattoo modified the design on the butterfly, to incorporate little hearts where circles were originally.
The first one I got was a butterfly with my older sister's initials below it. She passed when I was younger and had the same tattoo. I got it right after my 18th birthday. The second one I got is the Trinity on my foot but I can't seem to find a picture of it. The third is a latin saying on my ribs. I love them all and would love to get another!
i was just thinking about posting something like this today! & i love the butterfly that you want :))
the first one is mine(left shoulder)....i love it! & the second picture is one i might get.
well idk why that second picture didnt work? ill try to get another picture later!
Here's mine. I got 2 dolphins on my left shoulder.
I want my next tattoo to be the Penn State paw print on right hip.
EDIT: The only thing that I'm hestiant about is if I get pregnant later, will my tatto stretch? I hope my left shoulder will be safe from any stretching but I think any where near my stomach or hip area will probably stretch. Maybe why I haven't gotten my paw print yet.
I also have this one, for reasons similar to the one I posted above, although this one was more for motivation to change my ways for the better.
It's a symbol that represents discipline, from a Nine Inch Nails album. The red line wraps halfway around my arm. NIN's music has been a hugely important part of my life for years and is responsible for some of the most incredible experiences of my life thus far.
The shiny-ness is from lotion, and my arm is all swollen in this pic...this was minutes after I got it done. It looks much better now.

I have two, I want more but my BF doesn't like them... So probably only two for me. haha but here are mine:
My dragonflies, that need to be redone... (my first tattoo 5 years ago) I've been obsessed with dragonflies for probably 10 years now, no idea why, but I love my little dragonflies!

My second tattoo: "follow your heart" it's my handwriting (so some people have a hard time reading it lol) and it's a constant reminder to stay true to myself and listen to what my heart says...

o0olibelulao0o- I think the follow your heart one is pretty! I like your hand writing! = D
yrret107-My sister has 2. One is on her hip. If you make sure it's not touching your tummy too much it will be fine. My cousin got preggers and her's didn't stretch at all!
I can't wait to see my tattoo in my dress! :)
Here they are...the half sleeve piece will be colored and finished by the time we get married...eventually it will become a sleeve but i'll save the expenses now for the wedding.
NSFW
(sorry bout the side boobage)
@his barista: thank you! I actually wrote it on my arm in pen for like MONTHS before I decided to get it, since it will be seen all the time... And then I wrote it on paper about a thousand times to find the one I liked best... haha but I notice people all the time just kind of staring blankly and tilting their heads. They either think it says "follow your love" (I'm not even sure what that is supposed to mean, but...) or they ask if it's my name... haha It doesn't bother me, I know what it says.
Jennhasfeet-The one with the girl and the tree is pretty! Where did you come up with the idea? And no worries about the side boobage! We're all (mostly?) girls here. = )
...I bet you wrote it a thousand times! I'd want it perfect! lol.
I have one on my shoulder and excuse this picture crebre was a tad bit tipsy lol.... i have others but they are in err naughty places and i can't take pix of them.. i want another one on my foot but we shall see lol.. I feel that I am getting a tad bit old for it although I love redherring's story about her mom. When I got this one my mom almost sh.tted on herself lol... they still freak out by the amount of tattos I have I'm the rebel child.
i have eleven total...here are a few :

pardon the lovely cell phone quality, and aquaphor shine of this one :-) it's on my right side, if you can't tell from the photo.
okay i edited to add a better photo of the "moved by music" tattoo...
you can see two in this one.

this is from "pirate day" on fi's boat :-) i don't recommend tattoos on your ribcage unless you deal with pain well. not gonna lie...i cried like a little bitch.

you can see my cherry blossom tattoo (along with the dress i almost chose)

you can see the cherry blossom tattoo and my tiny butterfly on my wrist (in yet another dress i almost chose).

sorry if any of these are huge!!
I have two, one right on my hip bone that is a Celtic trinity knot which my mother, two sisters and I got all together.
My second is a grey shaded orchid on my foot with some orange in it that I got on my honeymoon!:) I had been wanting another and I had the most beautiful bouquet of orange orchids so there you have it...
It's semi addicting once you start, but if there is something meaningful to you I think they are beautiful!
P.S. Sorry for the enormous size of this photo:)
@jennhasfeet - I love your robot! I've been wanting one for a while now.
Crebre-I believe that's the, "Come get me, Baby!!!" Look! lol.
Bellamargot-Those Tattoo's are AWESOME!
My pain tollerance isn't high, BUT my Sister was able to get 2 and be fine. And she's more of a baby than me. lol. She said it was like someone slapping a sunburn, but her first one was big!
thank you! the least painful of all of mine was the one on the back of my shoulder. i'd say as long as it's small, you'll be just fine with a low pain tollerence :-)
Here are my sisters! The one on her shoulder was her first in April of '07, her second is our grandma's initials. It's on her hip. Done May of '08
ETA: That's a lady bug on top of the 'B'. It's her soroity family.
I have four, on ony my lower back which is a vine of lavender roses, one on my right wrist which is a symbol meaning the importance of learning from your past, I have three shooting stars on my right foot and I have "lola" on the inside of my left ankle with a crown on the "L".
lol @ zippyleaf. I'd say sure, but I don't recognize them! I like that shade of blue on the dragon. Is is sparkly or am I nuts?
@Barista- Youre nuts, lol. It was taken right after I got it, so my skin was still healing and all shiny. The other one is 16-bit Link from Zelda.
