Please tell me I'm not the only one dealing with this. For the past 6 months or so I have been breaking out on my chest, arms, and back like CRAZY! I don't know what to do! My skin is very sensitive to anything with fragrance ... so I switched laundry detergents and I only use Dove soap (the plain, fragrance free white bar) and nothing seems to help! I want to feel confident and beautiful on my wedding day, not insecure. Has anyone dealt with this, and did you find a way to help stop the breakouts?

my chest has been breaking out actually this past week...not sure why. I have had terrible acne since I was a teenager, so I have to use Proactiv every night and I am also on the pill. The combination of these two is the only thing that works for me!

But whenever my chest breaks out I just wash it with some of my Proactiv and it usually clears up within a day or two. I also sometimes use a product called Differen that my mom gets from her Doctor and lets me borrow.

Other than that, I just make sure that I wash my sheets and blanket and am using a fresh towel and that usually helps a lot too.

But if I were you I would try getting the Proactiv body wash that they make. Proactiv may be a bit pricy, but it gives you results!

@jennaanne: Drinking lots of water and taking a good multivitamin help me a lot, as well as exercise and changing sheets/pillowcases often, but I went to a dermatologist before my wedding.  I no longer take those medications due to side effects, but it was worth it for my wedding day.

I find that I break out MORE if I let my skin dry out, almost like it's overcompensating for the lack of oils. I love the aveeno oatmeal lotion (or the target brand knock off!). It's not too greasy and no fragrance.

Other than that, I've found that the Neutrogena pink grapefruit SCRUB (NOT the cream cleanser!) really helps exfoliate and keep problem areas zit-free. I used to get really bad acne around my hairline at my temples, and since I've been using this it just doesn't happen anymore.

I was just having the same exact problem - breaking out everywhere! I finally figured out that it was because of the type of birth control pill I was on. I switched to ortho tri-cyclen (I'm pretty sure it's FDA approved to treat acne) and after a week I was completely clear. My face is clearer than it ever has been and I love it.

I have horrible acne problems.  I've tried all the medications, but the only thing that's really worked for me is changing my diet.  I drink a LOT of water, avoid greasy food and chocolate, and eat lots of carrots.

Changing my pillow cases often helps me a lot.  I also second the suggestion that you should keep your skin moisturized-- find an oil-free face lotion to put under your make-up.  The more dry I try to make my skin, the more oil it produces, and the more zits I get!  I was so against lotion for years, because I couldn't understand why my oily skin would need it, but it really helps balance things out.

I hate BC, it made me have mood swings so much, but that's a personal decision.

I break out so badly that my derm wanted to put me on Accutane.  I get cysts, whiteheads, you name it, I get it.  I've tried everything.  My Dr. had me on Duac and Differin which didn't really do much but dry my skin to the point of painful peeling and when I got my eyebrows waxed by skin came off with the wax.  I'm talking bloody mess.  Ouch.  I've finally gotten it under control with a regimen of Cetaphil facewash and moisturizer, a salicylic acid treatment (Neutrogena or Clean and Clear make ones that work just fine) and once a week I use Philosophy's Oxygen Mask and another day I use their Microdermabrasion.  The week before my period I tend to break out like a mad woman so I do 3 Oxygen Mask treatments (it's called Boot Camp) 3 days in a row to keep the acne under control.  I also use Mario Badescu's Buffering Lotion and, I can't remember the name of it but it's pink on the bottom, when I get bad break outs.

I used to use Proactiv but I kept getting milia.  When I went to get a facial to get it removed, the aesthetician said that is a common side effect of Proactiv.  So I've stopped using that except for I do occassionally use their Refining Mask.

Oh ya.  And I love my Clarisonic.

Acne can also be caused by an excess of yeast in your body. My ND suggest eliminating flour and sugar for 8-10 weeks and seeing if that doesn't clear it up. I thought she was crazy until FI went to police academy. They do not allow cadets any sugar and his life long battle with acne was over. Amazing!!!

Since you mentioned flour and sugar, milk also has a lot of hormones which can cause a lot of people problems with acne.  I've noticed when I drink a lot of milk, or dairy products, I break out as well.

I find that only salicyclic acid works for my chest and back (which is odd because it doesn't work at all for my face...)

I use the clean & clear dual action moisturizer on my back and chest just after showering.  I also use the neutrogena pink grapefruit body wash, but if you are sensitive you should probably not use that one

@jennaanne: I've struggled for years like many of us and I stick by the same things-clean sheets, lots of water, and a good cleanser/moisterizer. I never saw a difference when I stopped using my BC.  I have never gone to a dermotologist either.  I've also accepted that I will never have PERFECT clear skin but I will do my best and for the most part, my break outs have minimalized.  I get the occasional black/white heads but my pores are large and thats forever a lost cause for me.

As far as products go I've tried everything you can buy in the store.  The super cheap to the super expensive.  My favorite to this day is the Clean &Clear Advantage line.  My body acne has diminished a lot from using the Neutrogena clear skin body wash too.

@ananeele: Oh my goodness, me too! Dairy is the worst thing ever for my skin. Which, when you're originally from Wisconsin, really sucks a lot.

I also tend to get broken out right before my menstrual cycle (stupid surge of hormones) and during stressful times at school (stupid cortisol).

Regular exercise followed by exfoliation and a mask tends to help. Also, keeping affected areas clear of any restrictive clothing/items, especially synthetic materials tends to make acne worse.

    Sorry if that was TMI...

Thanks for all the advice ladies! Acne is something I have struggled with since my early teens. I finally got the acne on my face under control (I still get some breakouts, but NOTHING like I use to), but this body acne has hit me like crazy lately ... and it's something that I haven't dealt with in YEARS. I did one round of Accutane several years ago, but it wasn't for me. I will definately try the advice you guys have given me and see what happens!

I recently started using the Derma New cleanser and face products, and they are amazing. It's similar to the Clarisonic, but SO much cheaper. It comes with a huge bottle of calming face wash, and a salicylic/glycolic scrub that you dab on your face and then use the brush side of the cleanser. I've noticed an immediate difference in my skin. And I moisturize ALOT, I learned that not moisturizing is actually worse for your skin!

Oh, and I've tried everything too and I've found that exfoliating, drinking tons of water, and changing my towels and pillowcases regularly, really helps! Good luck!

I was having body breakouts that were totally unresponsive to the acne medicine that's worked on my face. The pimples didn't even seem like regular pimples (whiteheads), they were deeper, even sore, and some never even had a top on them. My derm gave me a sulfur body wash (prescription) that stunk to high heaven, but it WORKED. I got a second shower sponge, the kind on a stick, and would give my back and shoulders a good scrub with that smelly stuff every day. Then I could follow with my regular good-smelling soap on a different sponge, and I didn't smell like the sulfur wash after my shower.

It cleared up that breakout and I stopped having problems for awhile. When the pimples start to come back (usually in the winter), I get the sulfur wash out again and it takes care of things.

After years of struggling with my acne and trying just about every product on the market, I went to the dermatologist in September. I don't know why I waited so long.

They prescribed a oral antibiotic (solodyn) and a topical gel (ziana). I've been on them for three months now and my skin has drastically improved. It is still not quite where I want it to be but it's getting close. I always used to get hormonal acne but I just started my period and currently have no zits!

I was also one who tended to break out when I eat/drink a lot of dairy. I've cut that down in my diet as well.

i've never had a problem with acne but i swear by apple cider vinegar for just about anything.  for acne, i would dilute real apple cider vinegar (the bragg's brand is the best, not the cheap stuff) about one part vinegar to 3 parts water and apply with a cotton ball to the face or wherever you get acne.  this works for dandruff as well and other female problems but i don't want to get too "tmi'ey"

I use to have the exact same problems & as nast as this sounds mine was due to having a really dry scalp. Basically my face, back chest or whatever was allergic to dandruff. I was told to wash my face with the shampoo called t gel! It really worked actually!

@secondchances: I agree about the flour/sugar. I found out I have a gluten intolerance (and thus can't eat anything with wheat/flour) so as soon as I cut it out of my diet, my skin cleared up almost instantly. I have been on BC for years, but I would always still have some acne here and there. My skin is pretty much flawless now that I don't eat gluten/flour any more!

@jennaanne: I was on Aviane (I'm not sure what the "brand name" is). I was on that before I got pregnant and it never made me break out so I didn't think it was my bc at first. I eliminated all new foods, soaps, etc. and it was the only thing left. I guess my body chemistry changed after having a child.

Hi! I used to have cne and the. Grew out of it. But as soon as I started modeling it flared up again. Probably because of very one friggen touching my face! Anyways why worked for me is

Using extra virgin olive oil, sugar, and primer. I would just use olive oil to remove any makeup. With a clean wash cloth, then mix some olive oil and sugar and use as a gentle scrub, pay the excess off, massage the rest in my skin, and use primer to seal in the mosturizer( olive oil)

The olive oil molecules are too big to clog ur pores in case ur worried ;)

My skin is horrendous at age 30. It is the only problem I really have with my self-confidence. I would cry all the time imagining my horrible skin on my Big Day. I had an appointment for a Vitamin A peel at the cosmetitian about 5-6 weeks out from the wedding. In the initial consult she could see how upset I was with my skin so she told me I could go on a low dose antibiotic to clear my skin.

I had acne on my face, neck, shoulders and back (just great for a strapless dress!). Within 2 weeks it was GONE! With the addition of airbrush makeup, my skin was flawless all day. Not a long term solution, I stopped the antibiotics shortly after the wedding and my skin sucks again but absolutely worth it on my wedding day!

Not sure that it's for everyone as I don't like medication but it made me feel beautiful:)

Any advice for getting rid of acne scars? For the most part my acne isn't bad anymore - unless I use ANY kind of moisturizer on my face, but I have some scarring (which I think I notice more than anyone else) and would love any recommendations on how to reduce the appearance or any really good make up for covering them up?

I just skimmed the posts so I apologize if this was mentioned already but try some of these: probiotics (makes a HUGE difference), zinc, and/or tea tree oil as a topical ointment.  Any or all of those should help!

try PANOXYL!! it helped my skin so much and is much cheaper than proactive! I prefer panoxyl because when I was on proactive I got a lot of small pimples, they didn't look horrible, they were more of a bothersome.  I only break out now when AF is due, other than that panoxyl is AMAZING! I wish I had discovered it sooner! I also second not drying out your skin. I got a facial a few months ago and the woman told me to use a gentler facial cleanser (I was just using Dove bar soap ha) because it was drying out my skin so much that it was overcompensating, making my skin oily, therefore breaking out badly.  I also use a very light moisturizer (I found that helps a ton), I was using Aveda but it's kinda pricy so I switched to Neutrogena sensitive skin oil free moisturizer.

I'm so glad someone posted about this. Thank you!

I have never had acne or pimples my whole life. Everyone used to compliment me on my flawless, procelain skin... Now? It's like it's a different face.

It is mostly on my chin and around my mouth. I have had very sensitive skin, my whole life and I use mild Dove soap, with Lubriderm Moisturizer. This has worked all these years... Then suddenly, thinking back to last July, or prior, I have had repeated break-outs. It seems as soon as one pimple disappears, another resurfaces right in the same spot! It is awful.

I have been reading up on it on the internet, and I think it said something like 50% of women are prone to break-outs in their late twenties/early thirties, even if never having had them before. That was a shock for me.

I went to a dermatologist a month ago, and actually have my follow-up appointment tomorrow. She put me on Vitamycin tablets and a topical treatment called Clinimycin. To be honest, I'm not even sure if it is working or not. She said it would take around 3 weeks to see and results, and it has now been about 4 weeks.

In any case, she said it was 'adult acne' and very common and treatable. She also told me to stop taking the Omega 3 fish oil pills (I was taking them in hopes of helping my hair grow) and said that those pills would have a major impact on my skin.

Not sure if I was helpful, but I just thought I'd share!

@Berlinn:  Stop taking fish oil?  I'm so tired of how many conflicting things there are out there.  I started take cod liver oil because I read so many articles about the wonders it does for your skin and helps with treating acne.  Even acne.org recommends fish oil for your skin.  Can't they just make up their minds!  I'm starting to wonder if derms just make things up to make money.

Are you sure it's called Vitamycin?  I just googled that and it says it's a pill given to farm animals.  Did you mean Vibramycin?  That's a doxy.
