I don't really like plated receptions and I think for the type of event FI and I are going for, a buffet is not quite right, so we are doing action stations. We think this won't be as formal as a plated dinner, but will allow our guests to be fed faster and allow us to provide a wider variety of food.

Which of these choices would you choose if you were a guest at my wedding? (Adding a Poll)

    Slider Station

All Beef Slider with American Cheese, Crab Cake Slider with Spicy Rémoulade and

Carolina BBQ Pulled Pork Slider with Coleslaw all served with Sweet Potato Chips

    Mac 'N Cheese Station

Selection of Penne, Shells & Cavatappi Pasta, Selection of Aged Cheddar Cheese, Beer

Cheese & Asiago Cheese Sauces and Mix-Ins to Include: Rock Shrimp, Honey Ham,

Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Sun Dried Tomatoes, Asparagus, Roasted Garlic & White

    Truffle Oil

    Risotto Station

Club Made Creamy Risotto with Mix-Ins to Include; Parmesan Cheese, Rock Shrimp,

    Wild Mushrooms, Crawfish and Asparagus

    Pasta Station

Two Selections of Pastas, Three Choices of Sauces and Mix-Ins to Include; Chicken,

Mushrooms, Garlic, Onions, Peppers, Parmesan Cheese, Olives and Fresh Herbs

    Quesadilla Station

Grilled Beef and Chicken, Shredded Cheese, Diced Tomatoes & Peppers, Salsa Picante,

Guacamole and Sour Cream with a Side of Black Beans & Saffron Rice

i would go for all but the risotto. what about mashed potatoes? it's a great side and you can get tons of mix-ins, plus regular and sweet potatoes.

@kitzy:I agree that all but risotto would be very popular. But what about a veggie? There's a lot of carb here and I would want some vegetables in there too.

I would eat any and all of them but I think I would at least want the sliders one b/c the others all seem starchy.  I'm a huge fan of all things starch but would probably want some protein other than the mixins.  That being said, I want all of them right now!!!

I voted, but have another quetsion - Just out of curiousity, do you plan to spread the word or word your invitation such that it will be obvious that you are having a cocktail reception rather than a dinner reception?

I'd eat it all except risotto probably. My first thought: Mmmmmmmmmmmmm mac and cheese. My second thought: owwwwww mac and cheese. lol. Everything sounds so good but also pretty rich and I'd hate to end up with a stomach ache that would impede my dancing skillz. I agree that getting some veggies, maybe a salad station?  would be appreciated.

People don't like risotto?? The only station that doesn't appeal to me is the pasta station (its a little boring)

Thanks for your votes....This poll was just for the action stations. We plan to have other food choices, but for some reason, the venue breaks the action stations out from everything else. I think b/c each action/carving station requires an attendant where the warm and cold stations do not. The plan is to have

    • cocktail reception w/hot and cold hors d'oeuvres
    • "dinner" with 2 action stations, 1 warm station, lowcountry raw bar, fruit display, and vegetable display (raw veggies that is)
    • dessert - wedding cake

Both FI and I have a LOT of picky eaters in the family AND about 1/3rd of our guest list are under 18. So instead of trying to do a plated dinner which we know won't please everyone, we are opting for more variety. I just don't want to get a bunch of action stations that nobody will eat when the attendant fee is $75 per station.

@septcabride: My family is used to buffet receptions b/c of the picky eaters issues that we have. It's not exactly a cocktail reception since there will be regular seating and the food will be available for a set period of time whereas cocktail receptions tend to have seats kind of sprinkled around and people mingle most of the night. We are just not choosing to do the traditional "buffet line" reception so I don't know that I would put anything differently on the invite....at least I don't plan to.

If you're doing two action stations and you have picky eater issues, I'd do the sliders and the mac and cheese.  They seem like the biggest crowd pleasers.

And I don't think you need to put any words of warning on your invitation as long as you're serving heavy food, and plenty of it.
