We are using Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
Maybe you and FI can compromise and find a newer band with a retro sound.
She and Him (with Zooey Deschanel) might be good to look at.
We used "Yellow" by Coldplay. It's been our song forever, and it was also part of his proposal.
We (kind of) did a mix of new and old. Songbird by Fleetwood Mac, but the Glee cover of it. It's really slow though so I'm not sure what kind of dance you could do to it.
@Gemstone: We are doing something similar-- Love Like Crazy, which is our song and he song he proposed to me with.
@Crabbabs: we love She and him....i'll run that by FI tonight!
@Gemstone: I absolutely adore that song!! I wish we had a song that was actually romantic and not ridiculous (think along the lines of Kitty by the Presidents of the United States of America lol). We do sorta have I Will Follow You Into the Dark (Death Cab) but I think that's probably too morbid for a first dance song.
Thanks everyone, keep 'em comin'!
What about a new remake of an old classic? Our first dance is going to be "That's All" by Michael Buble'. My FH and I love Michael Buble' but That's All is a very old classic.
That Death Cab song is great - I love that song too even though it is a bit morbid lol but who would listen to the lyrics anyway right? They'll be focused on you
I am also in love with "Brighter than Sunshine" by Aqualung and "One and Only" by Teitur...both have an "old" feel to them but are modern. Good luck!
We did a semi-choreographed first dance to You are the Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne. It is a new song with sort of an old school feel. Several people at the reception commented on what a great choice it was, sort of upbeat but romantic.
@littlegraykitten: I think that @Crabbabs: has the right idea. A compromise is always a good idea when it comes to music... How about something like Adele's "Make You Feel My Love" ( I was goign to choose this one bc its amazing but my cousin used it so FI wont copy) Also another song thats really amazing is Ingrid Michaelson's "Can't Help Falling In Love".. Both are remakes of old songs with contemporary artist.. Let us know when you pick!!!
Ya i say get a cover of an old song by a newer indie artist. YAY dance lessons!! I totally want to do that so i dont look like im at my prom come the big day!
I swear our song will either be a country song...or if i have my way...Queen!! haha i love classic rock.
@cmvmph: That's gonna be our first dance too! But I'm doing Rod Stewart's rendition which is a tad bit faster than Michael Buble's cover.
I am also really struggling with first dance songs :/
Right now my top choices are:
Stolen -- Dashboard
Everything -- Lifehouse
Everything -- Michael Buble
A Thousand Years -- Christina Perri
Marry Me --- Train
@littlegraykitten: Follow You Into the Dark is greaet. I really wanted it for our first dance song, but FI vetoed it- too morbid and he's not a fan of the reference to Catholic school (his aunt is a nun, so yeah, safe to say their family is seriously Catholic).
@SarahSmilesDec28: <3 Ray Lamontagne.
FI and I are dancing to Rise Against's "Swing Life Away". It's kind of always been "our slong" lurking in the background, the song we always shut up and turn up when it comes on the radio, and it's really the only song we both love that is appropriate. And when we tell our friends, they all just kind of roll their eyes and smile and go "of COURSE you are". We just have to find a version we like, since most of the recorded versions out there are live (and therefore kind of crappy quality) but the album version on Punk Goes Acoustic is kind of too fast and chops off a verse.
Other close contenders were an acoustic version of "Everlong" by Foo Fighters and "Dig" by Incubus.
Oh, the debate over the first dance song...
FI and I started off just being casualy about it. Like, we would be driving around when we first got engaged and a pretty song would come on the radio. He or I would mention that it may be a good song for us for our wedding dance.
When it comes right down to it, I'm overanalytical. The songs sound pretty and fine in passing, but a lot of them ended up being pretty sounding breakup songs. HUH! Then the ones that were being suggested were over the moon sappy and sugar-laced. That's SO not us.
Yes, we love each other very much. We are just not sappy.
After many moments of me turning down songs because they were "break-up" lyrics, I was cooking dinner in the kitchen while my FI and son were looking up music videos on You-Tube (he's trying to teach him good music... not the techno-pop that spills out of speakers now-a-days).
All of a sudden, I heard the beginning of You & Me by Lifehouse start and I just remember thinking "I love this song, it's so beautiful". Next thing you know, I look up from my food prep, and there's FI holding out his hand to dance. We smiled, laughed, and danced in the middle of our tiny (TINY) kitchen. And now, it's our song.
I love sharing that story. Reason being, we didn't end up sitting down and working so hard at picking music off a list that felt pseudo-US. Now, our song has already got one amazing memory and it will mean that much more when we dance to it as husband and wife.
Moral of the story-let the moment MOVE you :) Good luck!
@littlegraykitten: Haha! Yeah, it made this particular decision easy. Is there maybe some other way to incorporate your song into your wedding if you think it's not quite first-dance appropriate?
For example, I also used Yellow in our ceremony. I walked down the aisle to it, played by our string quartet. :) I'm not super familiar with your song, but would an instrumental version work somewhere?
@Jd64848704: Um...how cute is your story?! Holy cow. Gave me goosebumps. What a sweet, sweet memory!
"Say Hey" by Michael Franti was a lot of fun for us. Wasn't our first dance song, but it sure was fun to walk out of the church to!
Omigosh I didn't get a chance to check this yet today but so many songs to go youtube! Thank you guys!! I also <3 Ray Lamontage (didn't know about him until he started coming up on one of my pandora stations recently)
@cmvmph: This is a GREAT idea!! I love this song by Nat King Cole and I LOVE Micheal Buble!! I'll run it by FI tonight. We both love Brighter than Sunshine too but I didn't consider that until now!
@Jd64848704: What an adorable story, thanks for sharing :-) Yea, we're trying not to "force" it, which is why I think this is becoming so difficult!
@Gemstone: Yea we plan on playing a lot of the music we like including things like Yellow at the cocktail hour since they're not really dance music type songs but I really wanted to encorporate them into our wedding some how. I didn't even think to walk down the aisle to it!
We were looking for something bilingual (Greek and English) But the one song we found and loved was so so depressing. So we wanted something where there is a man and woman singing. We went from Starship (Now a strong contender for the song to walk in to) and at this moment we're listening to Elvis and Nana Mouskouri "And I love you so". The lyrics are so beautiful.... We've bought a bottle of champagne and will be dancing the night away to find a song. We do have "our" song but it's not first-dance appropriate...
We are dacning to God Bless the Broken Road, by Rascall Flatts. It is so beautiful and the lyrics are perfect!
We are doing a Michael Buble song! We're having For Once in my Life - it's a faster swing song than most first dance songs, I think it's going to be a lot of fun
We originally were deciding between Ray LaMontagne - You are the Best Thing and The O'Jays - Forever Mine
It was so hard but we went old school; Forever Mine! =) And we just went with it!
Used a Michael Buble song Daddys Little Girl to dance with my Dad! Was perfect!
We are dancing to Rascal Flatts, "The Day Before You." Another favorite song of mine is "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain.
Van Morrison ~ Into the Mystic. A song that I love but didn't think of but my friend did who got married the year before is Goo Goo Dolls ~ Iris
Originally ours was going to be "Love of a Lifetime" by Firehouse, but now we both agreed on "Almost Paradise" by Mike Reno & Ann Wilson. :)

Hi bees!
For Christmas, FI and I were gifted (very generously by his parents!) free personal dance lessons. I think this means we need to pick our first dance song, or at least choose a type of song that we're going for. I wanted something newer, like Everything by Michael Buble. He wants something old school, more like Brown Eyed Girl or Unchained Melody. And so we're stuck at this standstill and looking for some new inspiration. Please share your first dance songs with me??
TIA!
