There are lots of brides who have done/are in the process of doing letterpress. BoiledPnut is one, and Miss Eagle's definitely posted about her experience letterpressing some of her "be my bridesmaid/man" cards and handkerchiefs.
We purchased an Epic 6 and will be DIY-ing our invites. We haven't started yet but were planning to practice tonight or tomorrow. Tuesday evening we're hoping to order the plate that we will use for the invite that have the main info (i.e. names, date, location, etc).
@mkim: Read my blog about it! And the Boxcar Press tips, too. It will save you a lot of time trying to figure it out. And HolyOke Papers are great for papers.
@eagle: I've already ordered sample paper from Holyoke and will be using boxcar press for my custom plates.
I'm getting really excited! I might feel differently once I get started. We will see.
I did my own - used Adobe Illustrator to design, Holyoke Fine Papers (take out the sheet of paper under the registration since it's #140 weight), Boxcar Press to make plates, Epic 6 L Letterpress (and their ink)
@zagora: they look great! how long do you think it will take for me to do about 80 invites with reply cards?
@mkim: I have to admit, it took about 2 weekends for me to figure out how to ink it just right. Once I got the hang of that, I would say it took another 2 weekends to press the invites & a reply card.
The speed depends more on the brayer/plate rather than how long it takes to run a card through. I followed Boxcar's instructions, but still ended up having to touch up in places.
I'm going to have to do another press (FH *forgot* to give me a bunch of names - argh!), which we'll knock out this weekend.
VEGGIE OIL is your friend for cleaning up! Don't use baby wipes on Boxcar plates.
@zagora: Thanks! I'll give myself a solid two months to get everything made and stuffed. Also sounds like I should buy extra paper for trail and error.
@mkim: Yes, get extra paper -- although remember you can run through "bad" runs again. Just use the back!
@eagle: Thank you so much for posting where to buy paper! I've been having a devil of a time trying to figure it out...
@zagora: Thanks so much for the advice with the vegetable oil! Non-letterpress related, olive oil is great for getting gum out of hair (drunk friend+gum+long hair+karaoke= disaster!)
@colli459: HA! Good to know.
I also +1 Holyoke Fine Papers. Love their paper. Fast service too.
I got my sample papers from Holyoke paper today. Can't wait to get started. I guess I need to design my invites first!
Zagara is right. Make sure you take your time and expect ones that look wonky. I used Arturo letterpress paper from paper-papers.com. Good luck and make sure you post pictures when you're done!
I got my letterpress plates from boxcar today!! This is so exciting also I am so nervous about starting the project.
@mkim: Just make sure you use the roller bearers, and you'll be FINE!
We just did ours a few weekends ago. Our suites are 5 pieces each. And 2 colors. We pretty much letterpressed 1000 times.
I'm glad its over, and they look SO good!
@eagle: I can't wait to see your invitations! I know I have to until the summer but it's too exciting.
@mkim: I can't wait to show everyone. I hope people like them. We did a "mixing white" colored border (its pretty much a champagne/light beige color) and then all black for the writing. I like typography so we used a very beautiful script and it looks so formal!
We also have some swashy type things, like yours too!
Have you started yet? Hows it going!?
Also: I've worked on a real letterpress machine, and I prefer the DIY kind. It is easier to actually do yourself.
This kinda makes me want to seriously considering doing my own letterpress.
@eagle: what is your blog? Does it outline your entire DIY letterpress experience?
@Koreanna: I'm a blogger on the main Weddingbee page, you can follow it here:

But if you want to check out my DIY letterpress I posted about, its here:

I'll probably blog my invites in June.
@eagle: I have not started yet. I just ordered my paper, but looking for ink currently. I am looking for deep purple. Do you know if boxcar or holyoke have a deep purple ink?
@mkim: I'm sure they do, they all use standard cmyk colors :) I'd just go with whoever is cheaper. We got inks in tubes off of Trollop on etsy. We barely used any ink at all. The tubes have 1/4lb of ink.
@eagle: eagle?? can you post a picture of the envelopes that comes with holyoke?
@mkim: They look pretty much exactly like this: (i got "antique" though, so its not white. its a great off-white color).

They're just a plain normal envelope, but they're cotton so they feel awesome! Holyoke paper is great.
Thanks.. I am deciding between the holyoke envelope or get them from paper source. Can't decide. lol
I'd get them from Holyoke - you can get the same color as the paper (if you got it from them?)
I've only ordered the paper from my RSVP's right now. lol. I wanted to practice my letterpress. Once I decided on all the envelopes I was going to place an order for everything at once. I was also looking for envelopes that would be easy to line.
The holyoke papers have things called wedding packs - so its cheaper, and comes with envelopes. I highly recommend them! Their envelopes are easy to line, too. Doing that today myself!

So last night I met another bride at the superbowl party and we starting talking wedding. Now I've decided to make my own letterpress invites. Any other brides out there who did their own letterpress invites?
