Just curious what everyone's opinion was on reading books.  Would you rather borrow from the library?  Buy from the bookstore?  Or get recommendations from friends?

I really like to buy books, but since we're saving money, I'm trying to get back into the borrowing from the library thing.

I go on half.com for most of my books! Otherwise usually amazon.com.

I haven't read an actual book in ages - the internet is my best source of info! Most books are online already, and you get instant gratification too! No trips back and fourth, wasting time on something that doesn't work for your specific needs.

I'll buy or borrow from friends. I'm seriously considering volunteering or getting a job at a local library though.

@ProudPeacockBride: As a writer, I say that the internet most certainly doesn't have everything you need. Bah humbug! :P

I prefer to buy my books rather than getting them from the library. I don't have to worry about returning them and if it's a really good book, I can just read it over and over again whenever I want to. Besides, I'm pretty particular about the condition of my books. After I'm done reading them, most of my books look like they haven't been touched. I don't like messed up books--pages bent, the binding worn, etc. And I get coupons all the time from Barnes and Noble and Borders and I get them from amazon a lot of the time so I save some money (although I buy a lot of books so I know I still spend quite a bit).

I tend to borrow books from the library unless I know I'll want to have a copy to reread over and over again.  I used to love buying books but the budget has pretty much taken that away.  The prospect of moving all of them didn't help either.

I would rather borrow from a friend or the library because I know I will read it and never pick it up again.

DH likes to buy everything.  Can be annoying when we are trying to save money. He buys comics and for books, he likes to collect Stephen King novels.

I do all of those things!  I used to buy used books relatively often, but now I will search for it on Kindle first.  If it's not on Kindle, then I will borrow from the library.  If a friend recommends a book, I will usually just ask to borrow it from him/her instead of trying to track it down on my own.

I love books, and I used to buy them all the time, but our budget won't allow for that anymore. Books have gotten way too expensive. If I know I will reread a book or it has special meaning, then I will purchase that book when it goes on sale.

As much as it would make sense for me, I don't like "renting" books from the library. I hate knowing that I have to finish my a certain date. The hubs is always trying to get me to get a library card and use it, but the deadline really bothers me, and I won't do it. I know you can just go renew it, but like, I don't wanna take a 15 min bus ride to do that, you know?

I buy books either in the store if it's an author I know I like, or buy them cheap online through Amazon, used.

Well, I work at a library so you can probably guess where I get the majority of my books! If I really enjoy a novel then I will purchase it, but otherwise I just borrow from my work. You can't beat free! Also, as part of my benefits I don't get late fee's. So no worrying about due dates for me. :)

I don't know about the libraries where you ladies visit, but at my branch you can renew over the phone or on the internet. You don't have to make a special trip. We also have a drive thru window where patrons can pick up holds/pay for fines. It's nice, you don't even have to come inside!

I only buy books. I have nothing against the library but I absolutley HATE the smell of older books, wierd I know :/ Especially weird considering I had a job working in Interlibrary Loans for two years at my university haha :p

BUT, in my defense I will read a book over and over and over. Also, my mom and I tend to share a lot of books so it is a little more economical :)

Library all the way!  The only books I purchase are reference books that I will use on a consistent basis, like cookbooks.  I never read anything else more than once and I have no desire to add clutter to my home.  If I bought every single book I read I wouldn't have enough space for all of them!

LOOOOVE  the library.  If I find myself tempted to check out the same book multiple times in a year though, then I buy it.  I really like to re-read favorites and be able to check back in them, so I'll buy ones that I liked a lot to have on hand.  I use the library a TON though and I love it.

I'll also borrow books from friends if I can get them faster/keep them longer than the library will let me (high demand books have waiting lists and you can't renew them).  I loan as many as I borrow though, which is pretty cool.

I get most of my books used from www.paperbackswap.com - check it out it's fun and easy.  Essentially you post books and mail them to other members, who do the same for you!  You can also put yourself on "wishlists" for the very popular books.

If I don't go that route I check them out from the library or buy them used from library book sales/thrift stores.

I read so much, it's NOT worth it to pay full price for books!

PS - If you sign up for paperbackswap pm me and you can use me as your referral - I get a credit out of it.

I do all of those!  I love to buy books that I know I'll want to keep later on in my collection - FI and I love books and hope to have a library in our future home one day.  Others I borrow or take out of the library.  I currently have way too many on my request list there.  I also can be known to spend WAY too much time pouring over books at used bookstores/library book sales.  :)

@babyboo: I love the smell of all books. I swear, they put crack in the ink or something. There's a reason some people get addicted and have their nose in a book all the time...:P

Our local library is a bit rubbish, it never has what I want to read in it, so I tend to buy. I'm happy to borrow from friends or buy on the cheap from a charity shop too. It's just easier to find what you're after buying from new.

I buy & swap with friends.  There are a few neighbors that we are constantly swapping back and forth and then give to other family members or friends.  If I am the last to end with a book, I will save until I have a bunch of books and then drop them off at a senior center or hospital.  So then the cycle can start all over again with those people.  With everyones taste, I get to read all different books. If I don't like it, I can get rid of it and don't feel guilty about spending money on it.

I can't do the library, only becuause I don't like the pressure of having to read it in a time frame. Bc I would totally forget to return the book or renew if I don't finish it and then with all the late fees, I would be paying more  than the book is worth.

I usually go to the library. This works for me because I am a very fast reader, so I can finish lots of books during the 3 week time frame you usually get to take them out for. I also borrow from friends if I can. I usually only buy if it is part of a collection (so I can re-read the whole set again and again) or if it is a particularly good book (like The Alchemist).

I buy cheap used ones from the marketplace on Amazon, or lately I've been getting them in the charity shop down the street from our flat.

I used to buy all my books, but it got pretty costly (and I discovered the local library), so library it is now. I loooove the library; I mean, you can't beat free books! Every summer they have a HUGE book sale (residents donate their books to the library during the year, library sells them, proceeds go back to the library), and that's pretty much the only time I buys books now (unless the library doesn't carry the book I'm looking for).

I like to buy my books...I just love being the first person to read the book...it makes me feel like Im the only one who ever has! I also used to get some books through paperbackswap.com...all you do is post books that you have that you dont want anymore and then you look for books that you want on their site and once you have sent a couple of books out to people and gain some points you can get your own books!

I like to get books out of the library and if I really enjoy them then I will buy them because I like to re-read. It's kind of nice to be able to get an idea if the book is going to be good, there is nothing worse than buying a book that sucks.

I was completely addicted to the library as a kid. I'm a postgraduate doing a masters on modernist literature now, so I have a lot to read. I love buying books. I had a gap this summer between my degree and this course so I went out on the day of my last exam and bought books I wanted to read instead of things on the courselist for a change, it was great.

I do use the library a lot for research, I have to, but I see all the books I buy as kind of like a collection. One day I want to have lots of bookshelves for them all.

I'm a huge reader.  I have been buying my books then selling them on Amazon.  I really should start checking them out from the library though.  Makes sense and the books I want are all baby related so I'll outgrow them.  If I really like a book, then I could buy it.  Not that I'm following my own advice, but it sounds good, LOL!

I LOVE the library.  I read a lot, at least a book a week.  I can't imagine how much money I'd spend if I bought all of my books.  Plus if I do buy a book and enjoy it I almost always give it to someone else to read, so what's the point of buying it?! lol  The library is eco friendly aswell. :-)

I like to buy my books, especially because many of them I get when they come out in store and they dont have them in libraries yet.  I do hate it thought because I spend $15-30 a book and read so fast (usually finish in 1-2 days) that I feel like I wasted my money!

I was constantly at the library as a kid, but in my old age (I'm 21...:P), I've developed quite a book-buying habit.  I love Amazon Prime.  Not only do I get great discounts on any book that ever existed, but they get here in two days. I always buy and keep my textbooks and 'fun' books alike because I have a mad habit of underlining and annotating.  I NEED to write in my books (though I usually use pencil, but still).

And Ms. Teddy, I TOTALLY understand the thing about where other people have been using books...I think I was scarred as a kid because whenever I was, say, eating a snack and reading a library book as a kid, my mom would always make faces at me and suggest that it wasn't the best idea because the last person to use the book may have been doing so while going to the bathroom.  Ew. Yell

I buy.  I really like to read books on my own timeline.  I always try to give them to friends and family when I'm done with them though.

I wish there was some sort of bookswap website that I could participate in - like donate a book and get credit to get a book in exchange.  Wouldn't that be cool?  I guess that's pretty much a library - but I'm a sucker for that new book smell!
