Try a sponge or a washcloth. but wring it out pretty good first, don't want to get your envelopes too wet.  Good luck... :P

I use a slightly damp sponge when I'm closing a bunch of envelopes :)

I used to have to send out mailers at my old job and I had one of those sponge on a stick things that have a little container to put water into and it had the perfect dampness for sealing an envelope!

Uh, I made my fiance do it. I couldn't trust him to do much else (:-P).

@monitajb - haha! too funny, it reminds me of my fiance, I asked him to put stamps on the save the dates and after like 10 min, he asked why they weren't sticking to the paper, I look up and he is licking the stamps, they were self-adhesive stickers...clearly THAT was too much for him!

@june42011: Ewww he was licking the sticker stamps!  That must have tasted worse than licking envelopes!

LOL I felt the same way with our save the dates. I tried using a wet cloth but it didn't work for some reason so I was stuck licking them all!

I'm glad I'm planning on making our own envelopes with the DIY invites cause I don't think I'd be able to stand licking that many envelopes again!

Ugh I hated doing that! It seemed like the envelopes we got were especially gross tasting too.

Licking envelopes might be one of my biggest fears. I'm just so scared of getting a paper cut on my tongue! I always use a glue stick, or make someone else do it.

I'm the one who suggested glue sticks in the first place just an FYI. I used to be an event manager in the non-profit world. We'd have to send out literally hundreds and hundreds of mailings on an almost weekly basis, I've tried everything, the little sponge water tubes (personally the sponges can degrade and then the envelope gets to wet and gets wrinkly and weird sometimes looses the stick), the tube liquid glue sticks are my favorite, but the regular glue sticks will work just as well and for a "beginner" are sometimes better to use.

Let me give you ladies a couple of tips if you're serious about going this route. Often it's better to use the colored sticks (the color fades once it dries) because you can see if it gets anywhere else. Make sure to have stacks of white junk paper to use under your envelopes, seal then move the next invite down slightly before you seal it because you don't want residue on the outside of your envelopes. Make sure you don't over glue it this can lead to the invite getting glued to the envelope so a thin layer is all that's needed if you get a clump of glue stick stuck to the envelope use a q-tip to remove it (fingers need to stay clean to seal). My method was always keeping a small edge of unsealed area closest to the inside of the area to allow for any movement of the glue. Follow those few simple rules and you should be a mailing pro in no time! Good luck!
