    Lilacs : wedding Lilac Bouquet

Has anyone used them in their bouquets/arrangements? I know they have a brief bloom season, but luckily that happens to be in the same period I want to get married in. Go me!

For those that have used them, about how much did they cost? How did they hold up?

I didnt, but they are my FAVORITE flowers and I'd have loved to use them - unfortunately a september wedding prohibited that.  I just wanted to bump this for you =o)

How gorgeous would a mix of white and traditional be for a bouquet?!  Mmmmm drool

    Thanks for the bump!

I LOVE lilacs and plan on using them as a rose replacement in my bouquets. They have a gorgeous scent like roses do, but have more of the natural wildflower look I'm going for. My mom has two lilac bushes in the yard, and when spring rolls around she'll keep a few stems in the kitchen for as long as the bushes are blooming. They remind me of home. :)

Here are some examples of lilac bridal bouquets.

Mmmm...looking at those, I wish it was spring! The only major concern I have is whether or not they're affordable.

did you try looking on fiftyflowers.com to get a feel?

    http://www.fiftyflowers.com/search.php?search_val=lilac

looks like you can get 50 stems for $180 on there - not awful.

They remind me of home too...we have several lilac trees in our yard that are like 100 years old.  Love

I just have to throw this in the conversation: please check with your bridesmaids especially for allergies before commiting to lilacs!

They're lovely, but if I were your bridesmaid I would be sneezing down the aisle and during your whole ceremony.  If you used them as centerpieces, some people also might have allergic reactions!

When I got married hydrangeas were in season, and in additon to what we bought, we were able to pluck some from my aunt's bush.  I would check to see if you know anyone with lilac bushes in the area in addition to your research with florists!

@KellyV: Thanks for the link! At this point I have no idea if I'll order flowers in bulk online, go through a florist, go to a local flower market, or whatever, which makes it difficult to pin a price down for individual stems. As long as it's relatively cheap, I'm happy!

@LatteLove: Allergies are definitely something to think about, haha. At this point I was thinking I would have lilacs mixed in my bouquet while the BMs would have simpler flowers. If the reception is outside allergies will be a concern anyway, though. Decisions, decisions!

Sigh...I just love them. They're a beautiful, nostalgic flower. <3

I also was hoping for lilacs in my bouquet, but my florist informed me that they are a tricky flower to keep looking good throughout the day, apparently they wilt really easily, and expressed frustration at these types of blogs because we pass around pictures of perfect flowers that likely wilted shortly after the picture was taken. Or the wedding/reception was shorter than the traditional ceremony/dinner/dance that lasts from 2pm to 1am like weddings do where I'm from.  She feels like a lot of brides are disapointed because they tend to have unrealistic expectations of what florists can do for us.

Not sure how true that is but just wanted to put that it out there for consideration...

@skobies - florists say the same thing about hydrangeas and multiple other flowers that easily wilt - but they can still be used.  I was in a wedding and we had hydrangea bouquets.  The stems were in those water tubes, and the whole thing was wrapped in ribbon so nobody knew.  My BMs in my wedding had hydrangeas and delphinium in theirs as well, but no water tubes.  The florist said to make sure we kept them in water up until the minute we needed them.  We had them out for about 2.5 hours pre ceremony, and they were absolutely fine.  We clip lilacs from our lilac tree all spring, and as long as they are in water as much as possible, they are always fine and last for days.  I gave all of the BMs a vase at the reception at the head table to put their bouquets in.  They looked good all the way through the end of the night.

I can see a florists frustration, but it is feasible to do...
