I've purchased gloss before without realizing it was lip plumping and it be honest, and it might just be the brand I purchased, it stings my lips. I've tried two before, this one and another and they always sting my lips. I'm not a fan.
I think one was by Urban Decay...can't remember the other one.
My friend had some and I tried it, I think it does work ever so slightly, bc my lips did look a little "plumper." BUT it STINGS! And my lips went numb and felt like they fell asleep. So not for me!
I have used Victoria's Secrets lip plumping gloss, I am unsure of the name but if you go there I am sure one of the ladies can help you out. Last time I purchased it they had 3 different colors (clear, light pink, and bright pink.) It plumped them a little but, it stings a little but but it is totally bearable. I believe this is $18 but I'm not sure
Too Faced makes one called Lip Venom. I have used the original clear one. This one stings more than vicky's but it does the trick. They sell this at Ulta and Sephora. This should be around $20
They sell a few of them at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS if you want to just try it out without spending the $20. Sally Hansen makes one, I liked it but I have a friend who said it stung too much.
Actually, they only work if they do sting. The reason your lips get 'plumper' is that they're irritatted by one of the ingredients in the gloss, usually some kind of pepper. It's kind of a screwed up concept in my opinion, so I don't really use them. I bought one accidentally too from Urban Decay and theirs doesn't sting too badly, so I'll use it sometimes.
The stinging is what “plumps” your lips (if the plumping agent is an irritant). I’ve only tried a couple, and the one that I thought worked the best was “Lip Fusion XL”. They come in colors and clear. It doesn’t sting – when you put it on, it feels cool on your lips for a couple of minutes, but it doesn’t sting. It’s also expensive though – I got it at Sephora if you want to test it out.
@stephinPA: but did they plump? i'm not worried if it hurts. lol. just if it will plump my thin lips!
@coffeekitty: I didn't really notice a difference to be honest.
@coffeekitty: but that's me. You might notice a difference of some sort.
@stephinPA: They don't really seem to work for me, either :P.
One of my friends had one that she bought on accident and we thought it was hilarious, because it made your lips go numb. The girls would put it on really thick and then kiss their husbands/boyfriends and see how long it took before the guys were like "Why are my lips going numb?"
I can say, when your face goes numb, you certainly FEEL plumper, but the visible difference was negligible.
I think it's more about psychology than actual visual difference with those lip-plumping glosses. If they really worked wouldn't we know about it?
To make your lips look bigger, try out a high-shine gloss---reflecting the light increases the attention on your lips.
@gabrielleelise1981: I second you on the Lip Fusion being the best!
I'm addicted to lip plumper ladies! Some work, some don't. All the Mac ones are crap...love the gloss, but the plumper doesn't work. Lip Venom is okay, but there are better ones out there. I really like the colors of the Pout lip plumper line and it does a good job on the plumping side. I've even had a friend who's good with essential oils make me a gloss from scratch (it worked), but I would still vote Lip Fusion as number one. It does sting, but that means it's working. I've found with most that if the first use stings a lot then it will work better (beauty=pain?? lol). The thing about Lip Fusion is that the effects last a lot longer than the other. I felt as though my lips were more "permanently" plumped (meaning they stayed looking fuller without having the pile the gloss on every 5 minutes!).
I'm a lip gloss fien so trust me when I say that Lip Fusion is my favourite.
They do work... like PP said it is due to an ingredient that irritates the lips. It's not a huge difference though and a lot of people wouldn't notice. Also, most of them are much more sticky than regular lip gloss.
They may make you lips look ever so slightly more plump for maybe an hour tops and that's it. Don't waste your money.
I like the Sally Hansen kind - it tingles but I do think it works. I have full lips, so just use it along the inside edge of my upper lip for a little "lift" at the bow.
Per Mrs. Peters' advice, I am going to try out Lip Fusion, too.
@popover: Try it for sure! It's seriously the only one that I seen an actual difference with.
@Mrs.KMM: I agree that hardly any of them work, but there are a couple where I have seen a good difference.
I went to ULTA but they didn't have it! darn it. Guess I need to go to Sephora!
I used one of these when I added some into an order I was placing from an online discount cosmetics site. Oh, indeed, it works. I was surprised by how well it worked, and more than a little alarmed at the stinging and tingling that accompanied my enlarged lips, so I scrutinized the ingredients. What's causing your lips to swell? That's capsaicin. The stuff that makes habanero peppers hot. Of course your lips swell! I was amused to realize that, and somewhat relieved that it was at least a natural chemical and not something experimental that was going to give me lip-cancer or something. But yeah, it only lasts a couple minutes. I could see it being useful if you're getting photos taken. I think I tossed it after showing a few friends.
Maybe just rub some habenero peppers?
They are like 8-10 for less than a buck! Hehe!
Hey girls,
Just coming back with an update. I decided to take your advice and I got the Lip Venom at Sephora. It was $16 for a tube about 1/2 the size of a regular lip gloss, so I was a little sticker shocked, but I went for it anyways.
When I got home and put it on, it did not tingle at first, but then started warming up. I actually liked the tingle. Kind of reminds me of cinnamon...not burning or unpleasant at all, just warm and tingly.
And...it REALLY works. The difference is noticable within 30 seconds and lasts...maybe an hour or so...
My lips aren't "thin" but they also aren't "full." For me, the Lip Venom gave me the appearance of full (not inflated or unnatural) lips. I really love it. And I think the tiny tube will last me for for as long as a lip glass stays good anyways (about a year I'm guessing).
Thanks for your help!
@Sasha2011: i'm not that computer savvy...but i might be able to pull this off. i'll try to do it one evening this week.
Glad it worked out for you, Sasha! I think the irritant make your lips pinker, too, which I like.
I used Lip Injection by Too Faced and it made my lips look a lot poutier, fuller and red (due to the swelling). It stings big time though!
I tried Lip Venom, don't remember seeing a big difference.
Go to sephora and test out the products, otherwise invest in a good lipstick and gloss and try using a neutral liner to draw slightly outside your natural lip lines.
I've tried them and the only thing I have noticed is that they put your lips to sleep.
@coffeekitty: I like the lip venom too, but try the lip fusion and your lips will be plumped much longer! It has collagen in it..love it :)

Have you used them? Do you have a favorite? I want to try one, but I need some guidance.
Thanks!
