Everyone has their preference regarding wedding reception entertainment. I have been to weddings that have had both live bands and DJs. My personal preference is a live band, so my fiance’ and I are going to have our favorite band come and play cover songs, and a DJ for set breaks. Some people are really excited about this because they love the band, but others are expressing some concerns. What do you think?

I’ve never actually been to a wedding with a live band, but I have been to other events with them. I think for a wedding I would prefer a DJ because you can get such a great variety of music and you can have your favorite artists singing your favorite songs. Totally personal preference, though!

I prefer a DJ for the variety of music.
I pretty much spend the entire reception on the dance floor at weddings so if I’m at a wedding with a live band that I don’t particularly like, I’m not really going to want to dance and will feel like I’m sitting around.
ETA: I also prefer to dance to the original versions over covers, typically.

We had a live band and the dance floor was PACKED for every single song they played. He is quite well known in my city and records music. So that was why. I think it depends on the live band. I’ve been to one wedding where they kind of had both and the live band bombed! It also depends a lot on the crowd. I think an older crowd prefers a live band where younger would want a DJ.

Thank you all for your input! Our band is very popular in our area, and they do a wide variety of songs. My family, friends and I have seen them perform many times and there is never a show where the dance floor is not packed! I just feel that a live band is more high energy than a DJ, and that is what my fiance’ and I are looking for. To be honest, I have never seen a DJ at a wedding that I have been impressed with because they were all so cheesy. The last wedding my fiance’ and I attended with a DJ, the dance floor was virtually empty all night. But again, it is a total personal preference!

@BridalBlondie: You’ll be happy with a live band! It also you makes you feel special that this band is playing JUST for you! Plus you don’t have a lame DJ trying to ‘livin’ up your party.

I prefer a DJ. This is because for me and the type of music I like, the band never captures the feeling properly and even though they are very good, I am always craving hearing the real deal:)

I prefer DJ’s at wedding becase they can play a wide variety of music. But bands can be fun too. It depends on the range of music you want.

I was torn between this too. I really wanted a DJ for the same reason many pp’s mentioned above..the variety of music especially for OUR age group. However, my dad, who’s paying for this, is adamant about having a live band. The band he hired plays at wedding receptions and other events, but the thing is they cater mostly to an older crowd (parents’ age). Sooo that had me a bit concerned, but my dad told me today that they need to meet with us to see what genre we want. That makes me feel better because at least now I know we have options
