So my parents gave me what I consider to be a very generous budget to work with. When it’s all said and done the venue, food, drinks, cake, and photographer I have about $2000 left to work with. I had my heart set on a band and found one I love that is right on budget. The problem is my FI says he’d be pissed to find out we spent the ENTIRE budget on the wedding when my dad made it clear we could use part of the money towards the honeymoon.
So the question is do I keep the band and pay for the honeymoon with other funds? Or do I scrap the band, take the $2k for the honeymoon, and just have an iPod and speakers???

@RiverBride13: I personally would put it towards an awesome honeymoon. But honestly, I would suggest that whatever happens, you two are on the same page and make a decision together. It could cause tension if either of you ignores the others desires right before the marriage begins!
Is there a way to compromise? You could probably find at least a DJ for half that cost and put the rest toward the honeymoon.

Is the $2000 for the honeymoon on top of what you already budgeted? Or did you not budget save for that? If you already have a nice honeymoon planned and the funding I say go for the band, but if the extra money would make a good honeymoon wicked awesome then I say go with an iPod wedding as long as you can rent or borrow a good speaker system. I’d rather have a live band, which is what we’re having, but we already have our honeymoon booked and paid for.

Personally, I would use the money for a honeymoon. I am bias, however, as I would never spend such a large amount for live music (completely personal opinion!) $2000 is a large amount of money for a trip, especially depending on where you’re planning on going!

if the choice is ipod or band i say band! It will make a huge difference!

@RiverBride13: Honeymoon, Honeymoon, Honeymoon!
Granted, this is coming from someone who thinks live bands are not that great.
I think a compromise is in order. You could always have a DJ, and use the rest of the money to pay for your honeymoon. If it doesn’t cover the full costs you could supplement the money yourselves.

I personally would be happier with a honeymoon. Because, well…it’s a honeymoon! You could have a really amazing time with your husband and in years to come, I feel it would be much more memorable.

Spend 500 on a DJ and the rest on a honeymoon.
I would not do an Ipod reception

Financially we haven’t been able to save for a honeymoon yet because he has been off work due to a work related injury. BUT any day now he should be receiving a substantial settlement that would be MORE than enough to cover a very nice honeymoon, pay some bills, and live off while he gets a new job. So I know the money WILL be there. I feel like the music is such a big part of the energy of the reception. I never really liked DJ’s but that might be a reasonable compromise. Haven’t paid any kind of deposit to the band so not worried about that. Although they DID learn the song for our first dance.
I am just worried I’d be disappointed to cancel the band in favor of the honeymoon, especially when the funds for the honeymoon WILL be there. But at the same time I do see the logic in using the money towards something we will both enjoy. That might mean an extra 3-4 days on a beach somewhere ….

Get a DJ and put the rest to the honeymoon.

I already clicked honeymoon, but decided to read the actual post before submitting and I am glad I did. I would NOT do an ipod and speaker reception. Can you find a reasonable DJ in your area and have money left over to put towards the honeymoon?

Find a cheap but good DJ and use the rest on your honeymoon!!

It sort of depends on the rest of the budget and the type of wedding you’re having. If you’re having a backyard wedding, then maybe a ipod will be ok. If you’re having a nice venue semi formal afair that alreayd has a high price tag, it would seem sort of silly to cheap out with an ipod and not finish up and go the whole nine. How about a DJ and split that remainder on that and part of the honeymoon.

It’s going to be an afternoon, garden type setting. Pretty laid back. I’ve just had my heart set on the band for so long I feel like I’d be constantly wondering how it MIGHT have been if we skip it. I honestly think everything will work out. I can pick up a couple extra shifts and pay for the band myself since it is important to ME. Then there will still be money in the budget to put towards the honeymoon. The rest will work itself out.
