What about the Beach Boys "God Only Knows"? I think the lyrics are really wedding-appropriate, and the tempo could work too. I wanted to use it for our first dance, but it was a little too fast for my husband, who wanted more of a slow waltz type song.
we actually used "god only knows" as the anniversary dance song. DH and his mom danced to that say hey (i love you) song...here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU9naM5L8L4
Some people have been using Single Ladies (put a ring on it) by Beyoncé as a funny/silly upbeat song, I find it funny.
I don't know if you like country music but Honeybee is a great song by Blake Shelton.
Even if your not a fan of country give it a try anyway, my friend is not a country fan but ended up having a country song as her first dance, she loved the song so much!
Michael Buble - "Save The Last Dance For Me"
Michael Buble - "Everything"
Ray LaMontagne - "You Are The Best Thing"
Queen - "You're My Best Friend"
Straight No Chaser - "You're My Best Friend"
I'm just going to throw this song out there because it is just too sweet, so if you do decide to go with a "slower" song, I recently found a song called "She's Mine" by Brett Dennen. Give it a try, maybe, if you want to? :)
Check out some classic Frank Sinatra songs like "The Song is You." The roaring orchestra is so upbeat and makes you just want to dance! There's so many good oldies out there that are SO fun!
P.S. I think you might like "Sweet Pea" by Amos Lee. That would be a cute and lively, more up-beat song. Best wishes on this song hunt!
"You're The First, The Last, My Everything" by Barry White. It is so fun and sweet and bouncy!
We are leaving the chapel to Cake's 'Love You Madly' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_jPuASK3FE&ob=av2n
Not quite a 'romantic' upbeat song, but sweet and goofy & most importantly us, nonetheless... :)
OUr first dance was "Happy Together" by the Turtles. We did a foxtrot with a couple swing moves to it.
We have no special song and don't do slow dancing......we're seriously considering the you and me song by the wannadies ..... just have to decide how we could ever possibly dance to it haha
We are using Tesla" Love Song", which starts out with a slow guitar solo, but then escalates to lighter raising, swaying rock ballad. ok we are biker trash and needed to put "our brand" on a elegant vintage wedding!

We did "Blue Skies" by Willie Nelson. It has a nice tempo and has not been overplayed. Plus DH is a pilot so it worked out perfectly!
Can’t get enough of your love by Barry White! I wanted it to be my first dance song but FI vetoed it because he thinks it’s a baby-making song.
It's a little Broadway but I love Harry Connick, Jr.'s "A Wink and A Smile".
Im dancing to Love On Top by Beyonce. its has an upbeat tempo and very flirty. we didnt want the slow sleepy first dance either
Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions, bees! This will definitely give me a lot to ask FI to listen to over the winter holiday :-) I'll probably enjoy that more than he will... haha
I want to use Love on Top as well. I was a bit concerned because it talks about fighting through the tears, but overall I think it works great and so upbeat.
Also try our song...go on YouTube and type in forever by John stamos and the beach boys...it's INCREDIBLE!!!!
"Wouldn't it be nice?" sounds like a swing song to me, which is definitely upbeat and fun.
Michael Buble's cover of "Sway" would be good as a rumba. (also done famously by Dean Martin)
Michael Buble used to be a wedding singer, so many of his songs (both the covers and his original stuff) can fit a wedding fairly well. I really love his version of "Some Kind of Wonderful" also.
For something more contemporary, what about "Good Life" by OneRepublic?
I'm trying to figure out how we can use Feist's Mushaboom... Love that song!

The fiancee and I are not a "slow dance" kind of couple. True, we're not looking to do a salsa for our first dance, but we'd like something that's a little livelier than the traditional fare. Frankly, I'm getting frustrated with every wedding website that suggests "Embraceable You" or "At Last." Yes, those are classics, but can anyone think of anything a little more upbeat for a first dance song?
We don't really have any one song that's "special" to us aside from The Beach Boys' "Wouldn't It Be Nice," which doesn't lend itself to dancing. Suggestions? Preferably with a link to youtube or something! Thanks!!
