Can you move? I live in a pretty military/DOD contractor heavy area and believe me, I know. The good areas are the areas that the officers go with their $2500-3500 housing allowances, and the rest of us either pay exorbitant prices to rent a teeny weeny place, OR we have to live in shadyville. It sucks. I didn’t realize how impactful the occupations were on the environment..until I moved out of my parents’ house and in with DH and started trying to save $ for a house, lol!

Though we don’t have a bunch of strip joints that I know about.

Bahahaha okay so I live in your town and I was just bitching about this to my husband today, and saying how bad I feel for anyone who is actually FROM here. Any time someone asks me what there is to do I’m like, “Well, we could go to the strip club, get tattoos, or shave all our hair off!”

And yeah, there’s pretty much nothing in town as far as weddings go. Is anyone in your family military? There are places on base that are pretty nice. If not, you may have to go about an hour south but there are some decent places near the battleship.

Hit me up! I’ll see if I can help with planning 🙂

@Merinda1994:  Yeah Wilmington and Swansboro are both really nice! It’s a bit of a drive but there’s seriously nothing here, unless you want to rent out the Courthouse Cafe for a reception but even that’s kind of meh.

I say do something right on the water! We live really close to nice things, it’s just that base kind of acts as a repellent for everything nice because the Marines would just ruin anything nice anyway (says the wife of a Marine, lol).

I live right next to a big air force base and I hear you on the expensive rent. It is seriously so annoying because the apartments aren’t worth what they cost. I don’t have a problem with the partying though, maybe because it’s not all young people, lotssss of families. I take it you live near/in Jacksonville?

@Merinda1994:  I’ve been to Wilmington, so near there. I guess you have can look at the positive of being near the ocean!

My brother is military and doesn’t like living in military towns for many of the same reasons and more. Usually he lives in a small town outside of the area. Longer drives but he swears it’s worth it.

@Merinda1994:  If it’s any help, I live a little outside of town and we only pay 675 for a 2 bedroom/ 2 full bathroom duplex in a quiet neighborhood. It’s more expensive than we’d pay back home in Ohio where housing is stupid cheap (my parents’ MORTGAGE is 399 a month for a 4 bedroom/ 1.5 bath house with a 2 car garage!), but it’s way cheaper than in the busiest parts of town where they charge you like 900 bucks a month for a freaking one bedroom on the third floor!

Plus then I don’t have to go to base unless I NEED to, and I avoid all the ridiculous traffic for the most part too.

This town isn’t my favorite, but I try to take advantage of the beauty of it when I can. There are some nice parks, and a few beaches to pick from nearby. And like you said, there’s always Wilmington, which is more… normal?

I have a friend who moved here from Manchester, England to be with her husband. This is the only part of America she’s ever spent much time in and I’m like, “I promise you, this isn’t how America really is. There’s more than tattoos and strippers. I promise.”

Hmm DH and my BIL are both in the Air Force and I’ve never found it to be this way around Air Force bases… sounds annoying, but I can say I’ve never experienced anything like this.. not in Nevada, California, Louisiana, Nebraska.. Maybe you guys can move to the outskirts of town?

@Merinda1994:  I lived in Wilmington for 5 years and LOVED it! I would go back in a heartbeat lol. Have you ever been to Brunswick town? They have a gorgeous venue called St. Phillips Church ruins. Basically it’s a church that was burned down in the revoluntionary war. The walls are all intact, it just doesnt have a roof. And the price is awesome. Only $500 for a gorgeous venue.

Living in a military town can be tough (my SO was coast guard) so I totally know where you are coming from. Good luck with your wedding planning!
