I would say it isn't normal as in average or anywhere near the mean. Sometimes if people get stressed, though, your body will slow down labor or who knows what else could be going on...just try to let her relax as much as possible. Was she able to walk around a lot before they started Pitocin? Is there a reason they started pitocin?
Well it's not an every day thing, but it definitely happens. My old manager was in labor for 4 days, no c-section, she pushed! First labors do tend to be the longest.
First pregnancies tend to have the most complications (i.e. extended times etc) is what my mum told me (she's an OBGYN). Your sister is in good hands, worst comes to worst they'll do a C-Section. Try not to fret about it too much.
Thanks everyone, she delivered a healthy happy baby girl this morning, 12:12 AM! Carya Helen just wanted to take her time coming into the world, and was worth the wait.
There weren't any complications, just a very slow, long labor process. It was great for me to see, and my FI and I decided that we definitely want to have kids now! It's a great thing to be a part of! Thanks for your responses!
YAY! Congrats to being an aunt!
I was gonna say that she probably wasn't in "active" labor for a good portion of that. I know that tends to happen with first time moms.... instead of relaxing & going to sleep to wait for contractions to wake us when it's REALLY time for the action to start we try and make labor progress and tire ourselves out.
Glad all went well! WooHoo! =)
Congrats on being an aunt! Yes long labor is normal, I was in labor for 4 days (in the hospital for 3/4 days) they REALLY pressured me into getting a c-section but my midwife didn't see there was a rush or anything, so I waited it out, and im glad I did!

My sister is currently, and has been in labor, for the past 72 hours. Her contractions were 6 minutes apart at 1 am on Sunday, and have continued in strength. She was admitted to the hospital this morning (around 8:30), needed pitocin to help her along around 5, and almost 72 hours after her labor started, still no baby! We drove up to Boston on Sunday, and thought this baby was going to make her appearance sometime over the past 3 days. Is it normal for a labor to last THIS long?? (it is her first baby!)
