I took our newest addition to the vet Monday for his first round of shots, deworming and a physical and the vet said he was healthy, except for the coccidia. He told me that most puppies get it but there’s no way to get rid of it really, that dogs just become immune as their immune systems get stronger. Anyway, they gave him some medicine that will help prevent the eggs from hatching and becoming parasites, told me to watch him and make sure he eats and drinks normally because severe cases can be fatal for a puppy.
The problem is that we had him for two days before we knew, and he of course has pooped a few times on the carpet and of course, a good bit in the yard. I cleaned it up and scrubbed it, but the vet said that coccidia is something you can’t just get rid of without bleach or steam. He told me to get all of his stool out of the yard, but since he’s been dewormed and because it rained, it’s REALLY hard to remove poop. Plus, the vet said that once it is in the soil, there’s nothing I can do. Hugo will just have to stay up to date on medication until he gets older, because there’s always a chance for reinfection.
So now I’m a little worried about what to do. I have hardwood in most of my house, so I’ve been using a diluted bleach solution to mop up anywhere he might have gone potty before but I can’t use bleach on the carpet. The vet’s office is closed today and tomorrow, and the emergency vet (well, the tech that was there) was not very helpful and basically told me to just spray down my yard with the water hose. I’ve been trying to get Hugo to use puppy pads so I can at least clean up his messes easier and just mop the spot down, but he refuses to go. He always heads straight for the door and whines until I let him out. I like that he’s so easy to house train, but I don’t want him getting sick again by being in the yard all the time.
Short version: My puppy has coccidia (it can be fatal in puppies) and the vet told me to clean up any of his poop from the yard, but that once coccidia got in the soil (which probably happened because it rained for a few days) that there was nothing I could do. He’s also pooped on the carpet, and I have no idea what to use to kill the parasite. I’ve been trying to get him to use a puppy pad so I can clean up his messes easily and try to help prevent reinfection, but he refuses to use them; he only wants to go outside. I’ve been using a diluted bleach solution to mop my hardwoods just as the vet told me to do, but I can’t use bleach on my carpets and the vet said I need to clean it up or Hugo could catch it again until his immune system builds. Do any of you have any advice on what to do and how to clean my carpets? I have a steam mop but it doesn’t seem to really get down deep into the carpet.
